UNITED ST T I PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. MYERS, OF HuMBoLDT Ijor/vn."
DEVICIE F0 R ADJ USTING Fl Mesa-Baas,
SPECIFICATION filming "pm of Letters Patent to. 663,031, dated Jul 's, 1900. Application filed March 9,1900. Serial No. 7,985. a. model.).
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM D. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Device for Adjusting Finger-Bars of Mo Wers, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of reapers and mowers the hinged finger-bars upon which cutter-bars are mounted frequently get out of alinement with the pitman; and thefree rectilinear reciprocating motions of the cutter-bars are then impeded and the maohines'strai ned and damaged and the laborof the horses increased by such abnormal position of the finger-bar.
My objectis to provide simple and efficient means for-adjusting finger-bars as re quired to maintain them in perfeotalinement with the pitmenjand my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in thoaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the heel end portion of a shoe to which a finger-bar is to be fixed. Fig.2 is a perspective view of a pivot-bearing adapted to be adjustably connected with the vertical extension and pivotbearing support on the heel end of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a top view of the shoe, showiug my invention applied and a section of. a fingerbar fixed to the shoe and the shoe hinged to a frame adapted for coupling the finger-bar to a reaper or mower as required for practical use. Fig. 4: is a modification showing the adjustable pivot-block mounted in one of the bifurcated end portions ofthe couplingframe.
The letter A designates the shoe, and A is an integral lug or support for a pivot-bearing. -It has an angular recess B forthe admission of a pivot-bearing and an opening 0 intersecting the recess for the reception of a lateral extension (1 of the pivot-bearing B A mating lug and pivot-support A is into: gral with the central portion of the shoe, and by means of the two lugs A and A the'shoe A is hinged to the bifurcated extensionsF and F of the coupling-frame H, as shown in Fig. 3. The inner face of the block or pivotbearing 13 and the depressed face in the recess B are ratchet-faced, and by means of slots J in the lugA and c1amping screws extended through perforations in the block or pivot-bearing B and said'slots the pivotbearing can be readily detachably and adjustably fixed in the recess 13 of the lug A K is the end portion of a finger-bar fixed to the shoe as required for supporting and carrying a cutter-bar. It extends in alinement with the groove min the plate N, fixed to the finger-bar and shoe, as shown in Fig. 3. The groove m is a bearing for the pitman of a cutter designed to be mounted upon the.
finger-bar.
Dotted lines in Fig. 3 indicate how fingerbars will get out of alinement by use, and the advantages of my invention are obvious when it is observed I have provided simple and practical means for adjusting one of the pivot-bearings in the shoe, and thereby restoring a deflected finger barjto its normal position in alinement with the pitman required for operating a reciprocating cutterbar on the finger-bar. Such adjustment is readily acoomplished byfsimply moving the adjustable block or bearing B in the recess B of the lug A on the shoe A. In place of putting" an adjustable block 'or pivot-bearing in the lug ofthe shoe it may be fitted in one of the members of the bifurcated end F of the frame H, as shown in Fig. 4:.
Having thus described the constructiom'application, and functiori'of. 'my invention,-'its practical operation and utility'will'be readily understood by persons-familiar with theart to which it pertains. v
What I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by' Letters Patent therefor, is-
1. In a reaper and mower, a shoe having integral lugs for pivotally connecting it with a coupling-frame for hinging a finger-bar to provided with an adjustable bearing for a pivotalbolt to operate in the manner set forth' .for the purposes stated.
2. The shoe A having lugs Aiand name; cess B in one of the lugs an o eningo and slots J intersecting the recess anda block" or pivot-bearing 13 having an extension cl fitted in said recess and intersecting openings and clamping-screws extended through the pivotloo bearing and the slots in the lug on the shoe, 1 frame having bifurcated ends to admit the as shown and described for the purposes lugs on the shoe, to operate in the manner 10 stated. set forth for the purposes stated.
3. In a reaper or mower the combination of a shoe having integral lugs 01' pivot-bearings, VILLIAM MYERS an adjustable block or bearing for a bolt or lVitnesses: pivot fitted in a recess in one of said lugs, a S. XV. SMITH,
finger-bar fixed to the shoe and a coupling- I H. C. HUBBARD.
