SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,957, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed March 13, I900. Serial No. 8,442 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN FINN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scale-Loops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to scale loops or hangers of the class employed in suspending load-platforms and the supportinglevers therefor in scales of the platform-andbeam type. In scales of this type single and double bearing-loop -form hangers are employed, as shown, for instance, in patent to Strubler, No. 596,727, dated January 4, 1898. Heretofore the bearing-blocks of such hangers commonly have been made of steel in the best grade of scales. Scales to which myinvention more particularly relates are used much for weighing groceries, including salt, sugar, meats, &c., and the bearing-blocks, located, as they are, beneath the load-platform, are, when of metal, peculiarly liable to Moreover, the best ground-steel block presents under the microscope quite an uneven surface, such as will interfere with the free movement of a knife-edge, and when in addition rust appears on the bearing-surface the accuracy of the scale is seriously affected.
My object is to provide a hanger which shall be free from the objections above noted, and I accomplish my object by the employment of a hard non-corrosive bearing-block, preferably of agate, and a suitable mounting for suspending the brittle agate block so that it shall be free from danger of breakage under ordinary conditions of use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a single bearing-loop embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan View of the stamped blank from which the bearing-block box or mounting is shaped, and Fig. 4 a plan View of a double bearingloop embodying my invention.
A represents a box or mounting, B a nonmetallic bearing-block, preferably of agate The bearing-block box is preferably formed from sheet metal and comprises a bottom portion I), end lugs or flanges 1), side pieces 11 having bail-receiving perforations b and top lugs or flanges b The box-blank is cut, holes punched, and metal swaged to form the flanges b at one operation. In punching the holes the metal is caused to bulge out to afis that'the metal may be so thinned that it can be bent over the agate without danger of breakage.
In Fig. 2 the ends a of the bail are shown (exaggeratedly) inclined inwardly and upwardly, so that there shall be a tendency for the bail ends to'be drawn in rather than out under stress. This action is favored by the sloping inner walls of the bosses b The reason for such a precaution is that the bail ends or bearings are quite short owing to the fact that the agate block is neither perforated nor recessed at the bail-bearings.
Fig. t shows a double bearing-loop. Here there are two blocks and mountings, the mountings being connected by side links d, each having two inturned ends d. The links cl are connected and spreading prevented by a link (1 the ends of which are curved about deflections or depressions in the side links.
' The ends d have a proper inclination to cause them tobe drawn in rather than out under stress, as explained of the ends 0.
It is to be observed that in Fig. lone mounting and the side links 01 act together as a bail or support for the other mounting and that the sides of the bail C are the equivalentof the links at. It is evident that the particular form of the mounting may be changed and that the mounting may be stamped, cast, or otherwise formed. It isof great importance that the pivotal connection of the mounting with the bail be preserved, and also it is important that the sides of the bail be out of contact with the top portions of the box sides in the normal position, but not so as to permit an entire reversal of the block.
It is unimportant that the top retaininglugs are carried by the sides instead of the ends of the box.
The gist of my invention lies in providing suspended pivotally-connected mounting of material having such tenacity as to safely support a load and setting in such a mountin g anon-corrosive block, preferably of agate, adapted to give a nice bearing-surface.
As is Well understood in the art, (see, for instance, the above-named patent,) loops of the general character herein described are in use themselves suspended pivotally, as from a scale-base or (as is the donble-bearin g type) from a lever. In other Words, the bail is on the bearing (here grooved) side of the agate block in position to oppose the action of the bearing (knife-edge) carried by a scale-lever. In the appended claims the term bail is meant to designate a suspending member thus located.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a scale-loop, the combination of a box or mounting of required tenacity, a bail for said mounting having pivotal connection therewith, and a bearing-block of hard, noncorrosive material held by said mounting,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a seale-loop, the combination of a mounting provided with side perforations, side supporting members having inturned ends engaging said perforations, and a bearing-block of agate, held by said mounting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a scale-loop, the combination of a mounting provided with side perforations, side supporting members having inturned upwardly-inclined ends engaging said perforations, and a bearing-block of agate, held by said mounting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a scale-loop, the combination of a mounting provided with hollow side bosses, side supporting members having inturned ends and shoulders at the bases of said ends engaging said bosses, and a bearing-block of hard, non-corrosive material held by said mounting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a scale-loop, the combination of a mounting formed from sheet metal and having bottom, ends and boss-equipped perforated sides, side supporting members having inturned ends pivoted in said sides, and a bearing-block of agate, held by said mounting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a scale-loop, the combination with two bearings, of side links d having inturned ends pivotally connected With said bearings, and a connection binding said links together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
