I UNITED STATES MAX BERNSTEIN, 0F BERLIN, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR'PREVENTING REPORTS OF GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,742, dated J'uly 3, 1900.
Application filed November 17, 1897. Serial No. 668,865- (No model.)
To aZZ whom i1; mag/concern:
Be it known that I, llIAX BERNSTEIN, a subjectof the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Preventing the Report of Guns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the present invention is a device by means of which the report of 0rd nance and 'smaILarms is prevented.
To obviate the inconvenience of reports, according to the present invention a spring flap is arranged at the muzzle of the barrel, hermetically closing it, said flap being provided with a valve leading to the bore and opening inwardly. 13 y means of this valve a gradual entry of air into the bore can take place when the flap is closed. The flap may be applied either directly to the barrel or be attached to a removable cap or collar capable of being secured to the gun-barrel.
- The aecompanyingdrawings showa form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the barrel of a piece of ordnance with flap closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, with partlyopened iap, while Fig. 3 shows the inside of the flap separately; and Figs. 4 and 5, side views of a cap or collar with flap attached, which may be secured to the muzzle of the barrel by means of a bayonet-joint.
At the muzzle of the barrel a. is arranged a hinged flap b, closing hermetically against the muzzle under influence of a spring. In the flap b is a spring-valve 0, opening inwardly, which allowsentry of the outside air into the bore through the opening 0 in the flap, or a strip of leather may be arranged on the inside of the flap b to cover the passage 0'. On the inside the flap b is provided with a pack ing-ring (l, in order to insure a hermetical joint between it and the muzzle.
The manner of operation is as follows: On firing the barrel will be kept closed until the pressure. of the outgoing gas is strong enough toovercome the action of the spring-flap b. The latter then opens and. when the shot has.
left the barrel is thrown back by its spring against the muzzle, the suction of the air, which endeavors to suddenly'enter the barrel and fill up the almost vacuous space, also assisting to this end. By thus hindering a sudden rush of air into the ibore the report is prevented. On the flap Z1 closing the pressure of the air automatically opens the valve 0 or presses the leather strip back, so that air can gradually enter and fill the barrel.
Instead of the flap I) being fixed directly on the barrel it may be secured to a cap or collar (1, the latter being pushed over the muzzle of the barrel and there secured by means of a bayonet-j ointjf or in other suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A device for preventing the report of guns, consisting of an outwardly-opening flap 12, secured to the muzzle of the barrel by means of a spring-hinged joint, and having at its center a hinged automatic valve 0, in wardly opening and outwardly spring-actuated, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
2. A device for preventing the report of guns, consisting of an outwardly-openingfiap I), having at its center a hinged automatic valve 0, inwardly opening and outwardly spring-actuated, said flap I) being secured to a cap or collar o by a spring-hinged joint, and means for attaching said cap to the muzzle of the gun-barrel, all substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscriiy ing witnesses.
MAX BE RNSTEIN.
