TO` ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I, E. C. GORDON, of Scvastopol, in the county of K osciusko, and inthe State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadlto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thercon, rnaking a part of this specification.
In the annexed drawings, A A represent a series of the sections composing the fence. The sections are formed of four or more horizontal slatsa a a a, connected at their ends to the uprights d d, andb'raced by the diagonal slat c in the centre.. These sections may be formed together for a portable fence, attached to the posts in the usual way. This fence is intended more particularly to he a zigzag or worm fence, and is constructed without thc use of the fence posts `or post-holes. B represents the anchor which secures the fence to the ground. This anchor is composed of a. piece of wood, stone, or other suitable material having a wire passed under orthrongh it of a length suflici'entto' be connected to the fence. This anchor is inserted into the ground of a depth suitable to make a iirin support,'with the two ends of the Vwire projecting upwards. The sections A'A are then setupon the earth with their two inner ends above the anchors, when the wire is passed through the uprights d d, and twisted or otherwise secured onv the opposite side, (see x a', iig. l.) It will be seen that the outer faces of the nprights of. each section are slightly bevelled, so that when connected by means of the anchor they assist each other in supporting the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new7 and desire tosccure by Letters Patent, is- Supporting and 'connecting the sections A as constructed, by means of the anchor B, in the manner herein specified and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony Vthat I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day lof April, 1867.
E. C. GORDON. [L 5.]
