ROTARY ENGINE.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EASTBURGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in R0- tary Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to steam-engines, and particularly to that class known as rotary engines, concentric piston.
The object of the invention is to produce a rotary engine comprising a novel form of piston, novel valve-shipping mechanism, and novel means for supplying steam to the piston and for conducting the exhaust.
Finally, the object of the invention is to produce a rotary engine possessing advantages in points of simplicity, durability, and efiiciency, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings,formin g part of this specification,wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a rotary engine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 isa view in elevation of the end, showing the valveshipping mechanism. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing the piston in elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line at 4 of Fig. 2 with the shaft and pipe in elevation; and Figs. .5 and 6 are plan views of the inner ends of the packingboxes.
In the drawings, A and A denote the cylinder-heads, each having annular recesses, semicircular in cross-section, which form the cylinder at when the parts are assembled. The cylinder-heads are bolted to a rectangular frame I), and the shaft of the cylinder is journaled in bearings d, attached to said frame. A steam-supply pipe e and a steamexhaust pipe f are connected to the cylinderthe cylinder through the holes 6 and f. The cylinder-heads are formed with central apertures to receive the combined packing-boxes and steamrches ts,and in forming the combined packing-boxes and steam-chestsa cylindrical casing g is employed and near the end provided with head having a central aperture for the shaft. I also provide a series of ports 9 for the passage of the steam or exhaust. Between the central aperture and the ports there is an arm ular partition 00 to encircle the shaft and confine the packing. Between the partition and the outer wall is an annular spaceway. The steam from the pipe 6 passes into the space and from there through the ports to the cylinder. An annular flange 11 projects beyond the head g of the combined packing-box and steam-chest, designed to fit close to the surface of the piston j, said piston being keyed to the shaft. The plates 7t serve to regulate the pressure of the packing in the Well-known manner. The piston is provided with a radial inletport 1, terminating in a curved portion opening on the side of the piston next to the steam-supply pipe. The, piston has also a radial exhaust-port 2, oppositely disposed with relation to the inlet-port. The piston-head 3 is of such shape as to fit within the chamber of the cylinder, and it is circular in crosssection. Each end of the ,pistonhead"is recessed, as shown at 4:,' and ports 5 register with the inlet-port and exhaust-port, the ports 5terminating in the recesses of the pistonhead. Valve-blades 6 6 operate through slotsin the cylinder-head, each alternately controlling the chamber and forming an abutment forthe live steam as it emerges from the piston-head. The manner of operation will be apparent to those familiar with the art.
The valve-shipping mechanism comprises a cam 7, mounted on the engine-shaft, a lever S, acting after the manner of a walking-beam pivoted in bearings formed by the posts 9, and valve-rods 10, connected to the lever 8 by links 11. Posts 12 are provided at each side of the valve-rods, and plates 13, supported by the posts, have apertures in which the valve-rods are guided. Antifriction-rollers 14 are mounted on the lever'in position heads and communicate with the interior of the parts.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I. In a rotary engine, two cylinder-heads having annular recesses forming a cylinder when the parts are assembled, a steam supply and exhaust pipe connected to the said cylinder-heads and communicating with the interior of the cylinder, the said cylinder! heads having. central apertures, combined packing-boxes and steam-chests adapted to fit in said apertures, the combined packing- .boxes and steam-chests consisting of a cylindrical casing having a central aperture and a series of ports, a partition between the central aperture and ports forming a space between the partition and outer wall, a flange projecting beyond the head of the combined packing-box and steam-chest, a plate to regulate the pressure of the packing, a powershaft fitting in the central aperture of the cylinder-heads, a piston on the shaft, a piston-head having recesses in its ends and ports connecting the recesses with the ports of the cylinder-heads, valves, and valve-shippingme'chanism, as and for the purpose described.

combined packing boxes and steam chests adapted to fit in said apertures consisting-of a cylindrical casing provided near the end with a head having a central aperture and a series of ports, apartition between the central aperture and ports, a flange projecting beyond the head of the combined packingbox and steam'chest, a plate to regulate the pressure of the packing, a powerrsh'aft fitting in the central apertures of the cylinder-heads, a piston'on the shaft, said pistonhaving a radial inlet-port terminating in a curved portion opening on the side next to the supplypipe and also having a radial exhaust-port oppositely disposed with relation to the inlet- .port, a piston-head adapted to. fit within the chambero'f the cylinder, having a recess in its ends and having ports registering with the inlet and exhaust port of thecylindei head and terminating in the recesses of the pistonhead, said piston-head being secured to the piston by bolts, straps looped around and embedded in the piston-head with the ends projecting to the piston-collar, the straps adapted to exert an outward pressure, and pins forming a rigid connection between the piston and piston-head,valve-blades operating through slots in the cylinder-head and valveshipping mechanism, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a rotary engine, twocylinder-heads having annular recesses forming a cylinder when assembled, a steam supply and exhaust pipe connected to said cylinder-heads and communicating with the interior of the cylinder, the said cylinder-heads having central aperture's,combined packing and steam chests adapted to fit in said apertures consisting of 'a plate to regulate the pressure of the packing, a power-shaft fitting in the central apertures of the cylinder-heads,-a piston on the shaft, a piston-head having recesses in its ends and ports connecting the recesses with ports of the cylinder-heads, valve-blades operating through slots in the cylinder-heads and shipping mechanism'comprising a cam mounted on the engine-shaft, a lever suitably pivoted, valve-rods, links connecting the valve-rods and lever, guides for the valve-rods and antifriction-rollers adapted to engage the cam, as and for the purpose described.
