Letters Patent No. 65,126,8ated Ma ne, V1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN O IL-GUPS.
I flit: 5tigilmle niemii in in tlgste efler flaunt in making part at its same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
Be itknown that we, H. K. SEARS and S. L. HOLT, of Hartfordfcounty of Hillhffll'd, and State of Con- I necticut, hove invented certain new. 'and useful Improvements in Oiler, Cans; and to enable others skilledin the art to make and use the same, we will proceed to describe by referrin'gto the drawings, in which the some letters'indicate'like parts in each of the figures. Y
The nature of this invention consists in the peculiar mode of closing the drip or air-orificein oil-cans at the point of time when the oil or other lubricating fluid is about to-be ejected from the can'thronghitsnozzle,
by pressure upon the bottom of the can, so as to allow any drip remaining upon the outside ofthe nozzle to return back into the can through an orifice provided expressly therefor.
In the accompanying drawings is shown a-section view of an oiler can as now made and in common use,
with this exception, that we have formed an orifice, a', through the stopper, and i nsei'ted.(froni the inside) a sinall tube, 0, into said orifice or stopper, through which the drip, which fnay at any time-remain'upon the outside ofthe v nozzle, may return into the can. d a weight-valve, arranged upon a wire rod, 2, which extends downward to the bottom of the can, and sustained in its proper position by means of a guide and supporting-arm, This valve-rod is designed to be of such length. that when pressureis applied to the bottom it will close the valve against the tube a just at that point of time when the :fluid isejectedfrom the can through the nozzle in the iisnal way, thus preventing the fluid from being ejected through" the tubeor orifice a, and allowing any dripv which may remain on the outside of the noz'nle to'ret ur'n through the orifi cea'intothe can. This valve-rod also serves to prevent the set of the bottom of the can.
Oilers have been heretofore made without any cheap, simple arrangement for taking up the drip,- and for want of which the cans have become besmeared with fluid, and thereby very annoying to handle, which, by the use of this improvement, is entirely obviated. In this way ,we are enabled to produce a cheap and useful article of manufacture and use..
.We believe we have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this improvement so as to'cnable others skilled to uiake and use the same therefrom.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is The combination of the passage a, valve d, guide 2', and rod e, all arranged to operate substantially asand H. K. SEARS. [n s] p S. L. HOLT. 5,1 Witnesses:
