T0 ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A.MASON, of the city and .State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Shaving, Nicking, and Pointing Screw-Blanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clcanand exact description .off thesaid invention, reference being made to the annexed drawing, making part of this speciticationwherein` I I Figure 1 is a side view st my machine.A v
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
-Figure is a plan of the upper part of the machine.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan of the shaving and nicking mechanism between the iines :v and y.
Figure 5 is a sectional plan4 below the line y. I
Figure 6 is a similar view below 'the line z.
Figure 7 is anedge view, and v Figure/8, a. side view, of the saw for nicking the heads.
, Figure 9 is adetached elevation'- ofthe shaving mechanism; and
Figure 10 is sn'inverted plan of the s'having cutters'.
lSimilar'markant' reference denote the same parts.
The object of my invention is to shave or' smooth the heads vof .screw-blanks, cut the nick or crease .across the head, and dress o the point into a tapering form. y i
I arrange my machine so that three, four, or more blanks can be'operated upon lsimultaneously and then y moved forward to the next operation; and I construct my shaving, u'iclring,a.ndl pointing mechanism so that the several operations will be performed upon the blanl: while held in a deinte and rigid position, but the opera,-
` Vtion of each device is discontinued before the blank is carried forward-to theA device for performing the succeeding operation.
In thedrawing, a is the `lovver bed of the' machine. yb a bed supported upon the columns c o end d Land uponthecentr-al portion of the bod b is a hub, e', extending up to the bed or arms f, from which rises'the `sleeve g,'suppor t ing the disk h, that `in turn sustains `the upper plate k by the ycolumns k'. vlis the central and `actuating shaft, rotated by competent power, and giving motion through the pinion i, intermediate pinion i', ,(g. 1,) wheel in, -shaft,m, and.pinion n, to the cam-collar n around the hube. The bed o carries .the blankpholders, hereafter described, and it'is to be revolved progressively to present the blanks to the successive operations. To e'ect. this, I prvide pin s,; 1 Lzprojecting upward from revolving vcam-collar n', (see iig. 6.) Each pin, '1, acts successively upon a lever, 2,.set upon a fulcrum-stud on the bed b, the end of which lever 2 takes against a .cam projection, 4, on `the underside of the bed h, (see dotted lines in iig. 5,) and partially revolves the same .to carry the blanks from one operation to the next. This lever 24 is drawn buck to its nox-mai position `(after the pin 1 .clears the end thereof) by a springend `theend of the leveris made as a hinged spring-latch, in .order that it may spring downwards as it comes incontact with the bevelled side/of the projction'4, and after passing the same, spring up to be'in position for the nextV operation. Myvmachine may be constructed with any desired number of set's of shaving, nicking, and pointing devices. I have shown four such sets, yand hence around the revolving bed o 4Llmve shown twelve blank-holders o', in order that each blank-holder may be lstopped the required number of times for allowing of the respective operations; that is to say, when the bed o is in one position, four rough-headed screw-blanks are fed into four of the holders o', the bed ,o moves.on, carrying said four blanks to thc shaving mechanism for smoothing the head. Four more blanks are then' received into the holders next following, and the rst four blanks ar`e carried to the mechanism that nicksthe head at ,the same time that i the point is being dressed off oonically. The next motion of the bed 0 'brings the blank-holders 4around to the -pointfor the delivery of the first four blanks received, and for the reception und clamping of other ,blanks `as soon as thc bed commences to move again.A By this arrangement the screw-blanks are presented successively to the mechanism efecting the diicrent operations, and as theshaving, nicking, pointing, and feeding mechanisms areo'irrly duplicated in the four positions shown, the description will be manic, generally, to set forth the constnction and operation of one `of each set oi devices. sThe jaws o', forming the blank-holder, are ccnstructed :and arranged so as to slide radially to the 'plate o, and each holder is clsedafter the .blank is l'dropped between its jaws; ,to effect rvhich'lcmploy n roller, 5, attached tothe slidn'gjaw, and rolling agnitl'st'f.v i a flange onthe ring p that is-nttnched to the upper ends of the columns c c. This 'fla-nge is curved, as sltcvmI/at- 7 so as to relieve the pressure on the rollers 5 land allowthe jaw to beopened, -which is done byA a, pn'projectng' llownfwnrds froln the vmoving jaw'tll'nt coinesin 'contact with n stationary cam, ai, supported by thefbetl-v inthe upper surfaceofwhich ca m s' serves to- :rrest and' sustainl the schen-blank as it'is flelivered'from lthe slide-,br raceway` 6 `betweenthejaws o' as the bed o'eomrnence's to move. 1l: isga'f hole-"through ivhleh theponted blankisallowed to drop when hesje-ws are .opene'ilas aforesaid. The endV of the'racewayf'is made with spring lingers ijvhich grasp theblank! below the head, and each blank in succession is fornegldon'n'thrcugh thc'se'spring fingers nt the right time by the'fecdpunclrr that is caused to slide verticallythy the levez-*1Q and camnponthekrheel q,'the latter being driven bythe pinion f5, thnt receives .motion from thezp'inion 'on .the plain shaft l.4 .(Seel f fig. A spring, 1surroundingthc feed-punchfr, is employed to throwj'scid feed-plunger 'rup-as soonns the I cani 9 lia-s cleared the end of the lever 10. The device for shaving thehends of the screw-blanks consists ofv I ycutters 15, in xi-dish, t.v (See 10.) These cutters are cfa. shape adapt-edt() the form of screw-head, sons to s havjolthe' topiandedges or under veideY of thev sereAv-.hearl.4 Th-e'disk tisat the'lower-end of end revolvcd bythe spindle?, and said disk `ru'ns ina ringfopcning 'in theberlf.' The spindle 4s3 and disk t nre rotated by the belt and pulleys si ands, or other convenient'mechanisnl. The cutters15 have to be open as theygo down to place over the screw-head, then they havev lto be pressed'tovards each other to shave the head,` then opened and raised,` i 'so asto letonescrewlblank be carried-.array und another broughtto plnce.- This, is ellected by thecam-gocve. 18 'aro nnd the gen1" q acting upon the slide-rod`17, tha.t isgniddm the disk h and upper plate k, and has a fork,I t2, taking ja groovcaround a cone'or wedge, t1, thatslidesonA the spindles. And 12 12 are armson the fulcra 13, that at their upper en ds-set against the cam or wedge t1, and at'theirrloiver ends enter openings in vthe sliding cutters. 15 and 16 are springs that tend to keep the cut'ters apart. As the slide-rod 17 is lowered by the cam 18,"the'cutt`ers 15, disk t, shaft s r'andconet all '.descend, the cutters being open, and the weight of the parte hanging by a eollar'or pinon the shaft s above the cone t1. When-the disk t reaches its seat in the ring on thc bedf, the'cutters do not descend furthenbut the cone ,il being forced'down, acts through the levrlZ to'for'ce the' cutters 15 tothe head. ofthe blank end slve it bythe revolution of the cutters and disk.- The reverse motion first lifts the eonet, allowing'the cutters to be openedby'the springs 16, and thenlifts the parts bodily' front theheiid of the blank. The nicking; mechanism f consists of a saw,'fi,lhung oo. a vswingingfrainepuf, depending from a I bracket which is bolted -upon' the bed lz. The-saw is hung on anfarbor that' is rotated by e. belt, 31;, fro1n-the`-pi1lleys sl passingover guid'esheaves to the sheave 1:1.' The saw .is oscillated to and fr'o across 1,119, v,l-e'v`er .2O, and link 21 connecting-the latter tothe frame uf Theoperation of nieking one head is `done atthe sane tiine'that theA head of the 'succ'e'edinfg blankfis being shaved by the cutters 15, the cam 18 bringing both l the shaving and nicking devees into operation.
