Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

ROBERT JAMES KELLETT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.

IMPROVEMENT IN PUNCHES FOR CAR-TICKETS, 86C.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 65,090, dated May 28, 1867.

T0 all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT JAMES KEL- LETT, of San Francisco city and county, State ot' California, have invented an Improved Iudicator for Car and Omnibus Tickets; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suiiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

rIhe nature ot' my invention is to provide an improved mode ot' ascertaining the numbcr ot' passengers who ride in a public conveyance, the number of fares taken, and the number oi" tickets sold, or, in other words, a check on forgetful or dishonest conductors.

It is intended to use a series ot' tickets, (to he used with my inventiom) combining a number of fares in one, and each side shall be iudieated by a hole in the ticket until it becomes forfeit, and also that the conductor shall receive no money for fares unless he give a ticket for the money so taken, and shall reclaim the ticket again during the trip, or immediately perforate a hole in it with a punch, the cuttings of which are retained and fall into a box attached to the punch, and are -counted to correspond with the number of fares during the day or trip. Different colors in the tickets may indicate the diiierenee in price. For instance, a yellow ticket may indicate a single fare, and a red ticket a fare from tickets at the lowest rates, to be punched when collected, to be issued but once; and by counting the cuttings or chips in the box,

(which is locked and the key in possession ot the clerk,) the clerk is enabled to settle with the conductor. To more fully illustrate my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.

Figure l is a side view. tional View.

Similar letters indicate like parts in cach ot' the figures.

A A are the handles; B B1, thejaws. B2 is a spring for separating the jaws. Near the end of the upper jaw, B, is placed the punch g. The punch (a pin of solid steel) is inclosed in a gutta-percha case, C, attached to the jaw (the upper one) andthe spring D, which has a hole through it to allow the punch to come down upon the upper face ot the lower jaw, passing through the hole h, thereby cuttingI out the chip, which falls into the box E. This box is hinged at l, and when closed is held by spring m and catch a, or any other manner, and may be opened by the key F.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A punch with an attachment, E, or its equivalent, for holding the clippings or chips of tickets, in the manner suhstantiall y as and for the purpose specified.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.

Y R. J. KELLETT.
