TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Beit known that I, MARVIN CONVERSE, of Jordan, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the Mode of Hanging Window-Curtains;.and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whichl Figure l is an elevation, and.

Figure 2 is a vertical section.

My improvement consists in attaching the curtains of a window to a sliding strip, which may be movedup and down upon rods placed on each side of the window-frame by an arrangement of cords to be hereafter explained, so that light and air may be admitted through the window over the top of the curtain.

.A is the casing of a window, in which, on each side of the upper part of the window, I place vertical parallel rods B B, to which the strip C, crossing the window, is attached by fou-r eyes, C', so that the strip may be moved freely up and down between the casing and the rods. The curtain D is attached to the movable strip C, operating upon a roller or in other convenient and ordinary manner. The strip is suspended upon 'two cords, E and E', which, hanging down the side of the casing, are carried through the eyes F, from which the cord E is carried down and attached to the end ot' the sliding strip C on that side of the window, and the cord E is carried horizontally over the Window, and passing through the eye F is carried down and attached to the other end of the sliding strip C. The cords are of such length that the sliding strip C shall be maintained in a horizontal position as it is raised or lowered. The-cords E and E should unite below the point where they are carried through the eye F, leavingr them separated as far as may be necessary to permit thev sliding strip to descend to the lower end of the rods B B. Instead of the eyes F F pulleys may be used to advantage. Instead of placing the rods B B on the front of the window-frame, as shown, they may be attachedto the opposite faces of the frame, near the sash, and in such case the sliding strip C, to whichthe curtain is attached, would be shortened so as to slide between the rods, to which it would be in that case attached by means of eyes C C placed in the ends of the strip. In that case the ends of the sliding strip C might bemade to slide in slots in the sidesof the casing or between cleats attached thereto instead of sliding on vertical rods B, as described. If the ways should be employed, then the piece C might be dispensed with and the ends of the roll'er to which the curtain is attached be inserted in sliding blocks placed in said slots, to which the cords may be attached.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The sliding frameC,l carrying the curtain-roller and journals, moving freely upon the edge of the windowframc, on the guide-rods B, in combination with the cords A, E', and D', for raising and lowering the curtain, substantially asdescribed. Y
