ClGAR-TIP FORNI ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,893, dated March. 6, 1900.
Application filed September 4, 1896. Renewed January 31, 1900. Serial No. 3,520. (No model.)
To @Z5 tch/0m, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN BUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Formers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
My invention relates particularly to that partof a cigar-machine known as the header or tip-ormerg and it consists of the combination, with the header, of a positivelydriven roller the periphery of which forms a movable portion of the interior wall of the tip-forming chamber and one end of which is provided with a cutting edge which makes a slit in the end of the wrapper as it is being` fed in and wrapped around the bunch.
My invention will be fully described in the following specification and clearly defined in the subjoined claim.
Referring to the drawings, I have illustrated certain parts of a cigar-machine, including my invention, in order that the con struction, location, and operation of the latter may be clearly understood. n
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved header, the bunch-shaping rollers and a portion of the paste-reservoir being indicated in .dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top, and Fig. 3 is a bottom, plan view oi the header detached. Fig. 4. is an end view, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section onl the line .r ce of Fig. et.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in each figure of the drawings.
The bunch-shaping rollers are indicated by 1 and the pastc-reservoir by 2. The wrapperstretcher is marked 3, and 4. is the header. This header is provided with the usual tipforming chamber 5 and the side opening G ior the passage of the wrapper to the chamber. All of these parts may be of any preferred or well-known construction and form no part oi my present invention.
A recess 7 is formed in the lower face of the header and communicates with the tipforming chamber 5. In the recess 7 a conical roller S works, said roller being carried by a shaft 9, journaled in suitable bearings 10 on the header. The outer end of the shaft is provided with a pulley ll, through the medium of which the roller 8 is positively driven by means of suitable connections (not shown) to the driving mechanism of .the machine. The periphery of the roller S as it is rotated forms a movable portion of the interior wall of the tip-forming chamber 5.
It is customary in the manufacture of cigars by machines to use Wrappers which are already cut to the proper shape by what is known as a wrapper-cutter, and usually it is necessary for the operator running the niachine to cut with a knife the necessary slit in the end of the wrapper to enable the latter to be rolled smoothly onto the tip end of the cigar. My invention is designed to render this action by the operator unnecessary, and` for this purpose I form the end l2 of the roller S with a knife-edge, which will make the necessary slit in the wrapper as the latter is fed to the cigar-bunch, and the slit so made will be in the proper position in the wrapper,
which is not always the case when cut by hand.
13 indicates a passage leading to the interior of the tip-forming chamber and connected to the paste-reservoir 2 by a tube 14 in order that paste may be fed automatically to the chamber, as is common in cigar-machines.
The roller 8 is preferably driven in a reverse direction to that in which the cigar is rotated by the shaping-rollers 1.
The operation of the invention will be easily understood from the foregoing description and may be briefiy stated as follows: The cigar-bunch is placed in the pocket formed by the shaping-rollers l with its tip end in the tipforrning chamber and is rotated by friction with the shaping-rollers. 1When'the bunch has been rolled sufiiciently7 the wrapper is started into the machine and wrapped on the cigarbunch, and when the end which goes around the tip end of4 the cigar comes in contact with the roller 8 the end l2 of the latter will cut the usual slit in the wrapper.
Having thus fully described my invention, roller having a cutting edge to slit the Wrap- A what I claim as new, and desire to secure per, substantially as set forth. Io

of a conical roller the periphery of which Witnesses: forms a, movable portion of the interior wail ALEX. CUMMING,
