To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that we, WILLIAM LANYN and JOSIAH LANYON, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladling Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an invention in ladling devices for metallurgical purposes.
One object of our invention is to provide a ladling device particularly useful in connection with smelting-furnaces, where it is intended to remove molten material from retorts or the like and transport the same to another place.
A further object of our invention is to provide means for supporting the movable or traveling ladling mechanism in such manner that the workmen can approach much nearer to said mechanism while standing on the ground in front of the furnace plant for the purpose of tilting or raising and lowering the ladle to bring the latter in proper position before the retort-condensers.
Another object is to provide a drawingshield for the protection of the Workmen, which from the nature of its construction furnishes a means for the circulation of air or other cooling medium therethrough, as well as furnishing a structure of increased strength for the direct support of the ladle and the means both for raising and lowering the same.
A still further object is toprovide means for holding the ladle in position positively both when tilted in one direction beneath the condensers and when tilted in the other direction to discharge the accumulated contents thereof taken from said condensers.
Our invention is especially useful in connection with a zinc-smelting plant, such as has been shown and described in our application, Serial No. 681,718, filed May 25, 1898, of which this application is a division.
Our invention consists in the features, details of construction, and combination of parts, which will first bedescribed in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the saine on the lline 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar section on the line 3 8, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal section on the line et et, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view, partly in section, of the cam device for moving the ladle transversely; Figs. 5 and 6, detail end elevations showing the ladle in two diiferent positions. Fig. 7 is a detail end elevation showing the ladle as it appears when discharging its load into a receiving-pot.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that our invention comprises a drawing-shield which consists of a pair of hollow air-chests Q, having air-inlets q in their outer faces at the lower ends and openings at their top ends, as indicated at q', Fig. 2. These airchests are each provided at their adjacent upper corners with hangers q2, on which are mounted grooved sheaves g3, running on an upper rail p' and fixed on axles Q4, to one of which is secured at the outer end a sprocketwheel g5. The hangers are braced and the air-chests still further supported by bracehangers Q6, secured to the outer corners of the air-chests and to the hangers, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower ends of the air-chests are connected rigidly by a transom-piece qi, whilelthe upper ends are securely held together by a Stringer g8. In the space thus formed between the air-chests is located a vertically-movable ladle R, having trunnions mounted in a swing or swinging frame, in the present instance consisting of side rods r, connected` at the top end by a transverse brace r" and provided at its extreme upper ends with holes, into which are hooked chains r2, Whose other ends are connected to and arranged to be Wound upon drums r3, iixed on an aXle r4, mounted revolubly in journals T5, Xed to the hangers q2. The axle fr4 is eX- tended at one end and carries a Worm-wheel r, engaged by a worm a, mounted in bearings rf, fixed to one of the air-chests. A sprocket-wheel ri is iixed to the same axis as the worm and is arranged to be rotated by a sprocket-chain T10, passing over the sprocketwheel Tlq and around a driving sprocket-wheel T11, revolubly mounted on a stud T12, fixed in a cross-piece T13, secured to one of the airchests. The hub of the driving sprocketwheel T11 is extended to form a sleeve T11, to which are attached a hand-wheel T111 and a crank T16.
On one of the side rods T is located a journal T17, in which is mounted the axis T18 of a worm T12, which engages a worm-wheel T211, fixed on the corresponding trunnion of the ladle. The axis T1S of the worm is provided with a hand-wheel T21.
Each side rod Tis provided intermediate its length with an openin g, through which passes a stud T22, these studs being provided with handles T22 and with cams T21, which are arranged to bear against the sides of flanges Q", secured to the inner adjacent edges of the air-chests.
Around the sprocket-wheel Q5, secured to the axle Q1 of the roller Qis placed a sprocketchain Q10, which passes also around a sprocketwheel Q11, provided with a long hub mounted on a stud Q12, fixed to a cross-piece Q13, fixed to one of the air-chests Q, the hub of the sprocket-wheel Q11 being provided with a crank Q14.
To the remote edges of the air-chests are hinged swinging wings Q.
The operation of our device is as follows: Vhen it is desired to draw off the molten metal, the drawing-shield is moved along the tracks p and p2 to a position where its ladle R will be in the same vertical plane as the condensers which are to be emptied, it being assumed that the ladle is in its lowest position. This movement of the drawing-shield is produced by rotating the crank Q11, which by means of the sprocket-wheels Q11 and Q5 and the chain Q10 rotates the roller Q3, resting on the track P. The wings Q are swung outward at an angle to the air-chests Q in order to protect the workmen against the heat which might reach them laterallyT from the retorts not covered by the lrawing-shield. The air entering the air-chests Q through the openings Q and passing out through the open top ends at Q will keep the said air-chests cool, and thus protect the workmen. The handle T1 being rotated will lift the ladle R until its inner lip is close under the outer end of the lowest condenserof the row. The molten metal is then scraped or dipped from the condenser into the ladle by means either of a scraper or of a small hand-ladle in the usual manner. Then the ladle is swung outward away from the retorts by turning the camlevers T22, thus allowing the inner lip of the ladle R to clear the end of the condenser which has just been discharged. The handle T111 is again rotated in the desired direction to wind up the chains T2 and lift the ladle to a point beneath the next higher condenser to bc discharged, whereupon the cam-levers or handles are again swung so as to allow the ladle R to move inward with its inner lip close under the outer end of said next highest condenser, which may be then tapped in the usual manner. The operations of drawing off the zinc, above described, may be repeated until the ladle is filled, whereupon the drawing-shield is run along its tracks until its ladle is opposite the place where it is to be discharged. The hand-wheel T21 is then rotated to turn the ladle on its trunnionsand cause it to empty its load.
From the construction and arrangement shown and described it will be seen that we dispense with the use of a double track-rail in front of the furnace at the bottom, as well as with an independent carriage for the ladle mechanism and its support, and in this way the workmen can approach much closer in handling theladle, and they can also perform their necessary duties while standing on the ground,which latter feature renders the work easier and gives greater freedom of action. It will also be seen that the ladle is held positively to the different positions to which it is brought and that in virtue of the air-chests of the shield being made of two walls each the said shield, in addition to its function as such, furnishes a much stronger support for the mechanism than if the chests thereof were only of a single wall each.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In afurnace plant comprising a plurality of retorts the combination of a workin ans protective shield, means for moving the same longitudinally before the ends of the retorts, a ladle movably supported upon the shield, means for moving the ladle upon its supports toward and away from the retorts, means for raising and lowering the ladle, and means for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the retorts to empty the same of its contents.
2. Ina furnace plant comprisinga plurality of retorts,the combination ofa workmans protective shield, means for movably supporting the shield, a ladle movably supported on the shield, means for moving the ladle upon its supports toward and away from the retorts, means for raising and lowering the ladle, and means for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the retorts to empty the same of its contents.
3. In afm-nace plantcomprisingaplurality of retorts the combination of a workmans protective shield, means for movably supporting the shield, a ladle movably supported on the shield, means supported directly upon the shield for moving the ladle upon its supports toward and away from the retorts, means for raising and lowering the ladle, and means for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the retorts to empty the same of its contents.

5. In a furnace plant comprising a plurality of retorts,the combination of a workmans proiective shield, means for movabl y supporting the shield, a ladle, means for raising and lowering the ladle,means supported directly upon the shield for moving the ladle toward and away from the retorts, and means also directly supported upon the shield for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the rctorts to empty the same of its contents.
6. In a furnace plant comprising a plurality of retorts the combination of a workmans protective shield, means for movably supporting the same, a ladle movably supported on the shield, means supported directly upon the shield for raising and lowering the ladle, and for holding the same in suoli position positively, means supported directly upon the shield for moving the ladle toward and away from the retorts, and for holding the same in such position positively, and means also supported directly upon the shield for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the retorts, to empty the same of its contents, and also for holding the ladle in this position positively while such emptying is effected.
7. In a furnace plant comprising a plurality of retorts the combination of a suspended travelingr protective shield for the workmen, means supported directly thereon for moving the same longitudinally before the retorts, a ladle movably supported thereon, means supported directly upon the shield for moving the ladle toward and away from the retorts, means directly supported upon the shield for raising `andlowerin g the ladle, and means also directly supported upon said shield'for tilting the ladle outwardly and downwardly from the retorts to empty the same of its contents. f

In a furnace plant, comprising a Vplurality of retorts the combination of a protective shield constructed of a pair of connected air-chests movable infront of the retorts, and separated from each other by a space, a ladle movably supported between the chests, means supported directly upon the chests for moving the shield longitudinally before the retorts, means supported directly upon the shield for moving the ladle toward and away from the retorts, means directly supported upon the shield for raising and lowering'the ladle and its supports, and means also dirated from each other, said edges forming.

In a furnace plant, the combination, with a furnace a track adjacent to said furnace, and a pair of connected air-chests movable along said track and separated from each other, of a ladle-supporting device mounted directly upon and movable vertically between the adjacent edges of the air-chests and provided with bearings, a ladle provided with trunnions mounted in said bearings, and mechanism carried by the ladle-supporting device for rotating the ladle on its trunnions.
11. In a furnace plant, the combination with a plurality of retorts, a track adjacent to the retorts, and a shield movable along said track, of a ladle-supporting device carried by the shield, and means acting intermediate the ladle-supporting device and the shield, for swinging the ladle away from the front of the furnace.
12. In a furnace plant, the combination with a plurality of retorts, and a track adjacent to said retorts, of a pair of connected airchests mounted on rollers movable on said track a flange secured to one of the air-chests, a ladle mounted between the air chests, means for raising and lowering the ladle and a cam bearin g upon the flange and arranged to move the ladle away 'from the front of the furnace.
13. In a furnace plant, the combination,
with a plurality of retorts, and a track adjacent to said retorts, of a pair of connected air-chests mounted on rollers movable on said track, a flange secured to one of the airchests, a ladle, a swinging frame supporting said ladle,l mechanism carried by the airchests for raising and lowering said ladle, and a cam attached to the swinging frame and ar.- ranged to bear on the flange.
