GAS-METER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,611, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed July 6, 1899. Serial No. 722,924. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE KONOPIN- sKI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Meters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gas-meters; Y and it consists more especially of an improved construction of a gas-meter diaphragm into which the gas is introduced, said diaphragm being constructed of a single piece of leather or similar material, whereby no joints exist or are necessary and the device is rendered exceedingly effective under all conditions and the liability of leakage is reduced to a minimum.
It further consists of novel details of con struction, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a gas-meter, illustrating a diaphragm embodying my invention, a portion of the meter being shown broken away. Fig. 2 represents a section on line so :10, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent, on areduced scale, perspective front and rear views of the gas-meter diaphragm to which my invention especially relates.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a gas-meter, and B the diaphragm therefor of leather or similar material.
In carrying out my inventionIfirst cut out a disk of leather or similar material of the requisite diameter, having a substantiallycentral opening 0 therein, after which the peripheral edges of the disk are turned upwardly over a suitable form, and the leather having been Wetted and stretched to the desired extent is left to dry and shape itself over said form, the latter being of such contour as to give the leather substantially the contour in cross-section seen in Figs. 3 and i, wherefrom it will be seen that the peripheral portion D becomes substantially conical in shape, the cross-section thereof having the inclined sides E and F, while the upturned edges G serve as a means for fastening the diaphragm in position upon the flanged portion H of the plate J, said flanged portion be= ing provided with an annular recess K, into which the edge G of the diaphragm is compressed by means of the wire L.
M designates a plate which is secured to the diaphragm at the last stage of its manufac ture by means of the rivets N or similar fas= tening devices.
P designates an inlet to the interior of the diaphragm, the same engaging a nipple Q, which is exteriorly threaded and held in position by the flanged nut R, the flange of the latter bearing upon the washer S, whereby the leather of the diaphragm is held in the desired position between said washer and the adjacent portion of the plate M.
T designates an opening or recess in the plate J, which is bridged by the dome-shaped portion U, which is secured thereto in any suitable manner.
Especial emphasis is laid upon the feature of having the diaphragm B constructed of a single piece of material without joints and secured in the manner described, since by this construction liability of leakage is reduced to a minimum and a simple and eifective device is produced which is not readily liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gas-meter diaphragm composed of a single piece of material, and comprising a side wall having its peripheral portion consisting of two members, one of said members being laterally deflected and extending outwardly from the edge of said wall proper, the other of said members extending inwardly from the outer edge of the first-mentioned member and diverging therefrom, a laterally deflected flange at the inner edge of said last-mentioned member, and a plate having a flange secured to said flange.
2. In a gas-meter, a diaphragm composed of a single piece of material and having an opening in the center thereof, the peripheral edges of said diaphragm being deflected, a plate having an inwardly-extending flange engaged by said edges, fastening devices for holding said diaphragm in position upon said flange, a plate attached to the outer portion of said diaphragm, an inlet-pipe for the interior of said diaphragm,an exteriorly-threaded .nipple holding said pipe in position,a flanged verging therefrom,a laterally-deflected flange at the inner edge of last-mentioned member, a plate forming the other side wall of the diaphragm and having a lateral flange situated Within the flange of said member, said flange of the plate being provided with an annular recess, and fastening devices for securing said flanges together, said fastening devices compressing the flange of said member into the recess of said other flange.
