Be it known that I, MARTIN L. KEYE's, a
citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Carthage, Jefferson county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bending and Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to a bending and forming machine primarily used for providing metal bands for use on burial-cases manufactured from wood or wood-pulp.
The primary purpose of my invention is to form the band which surrounds and binds together the top of the burial-case where the ends are eurvedin shape and where the curves are formed in different radiuses.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my machine, the broken lines indicating parts removed and the dotted lines illustrating the position assumed by the parts under certain conditions hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, taken from the bottom of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the jointed handle, broken lines indicating parts removed. Fig. 4e is a central section on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line E F of Fig. 1.

In forming a burial-case from wood-pulp it is necessary to have a metal band surrounding the top of the case to give it strength and solidity, and the metal band is required to be made in sections and in curves of different radiuses, and the purpose of my invention is to furnish a machine for putting the metal band in shape to be applied to the top of the case.
In the drawings, 1 represents the former or bed-piece, which may be secured to any suitable frame or secured to the end of a block of wood held in a secure position. The bedpiece has a rabbeted flange 2, with shoulder 3, which makes a former or die on which the metal band is formed. I place the end of band 4 against shoulder 3, one angle resting on rabbeted surface 2, in which position it is clamped and rigidly held by cam 5, pivoted at 6 in the ear 7 and operated by handle 8.
By placing the angle metalen rabbeted su r' face l2 with one angle rest-ing against shoulder 3 of the bed-piece or die land moving handle 8 so as toirnpinge cam 5 against one of the flanges of the angle-iron 4. when the same is heated to the required degree of heat for working, said angle-iron is pressed onto the die or former in the circular form of the die as it appears in the drawings. The pressure of the metal onto the die is accomplishedv by jointed lever 9, with jointed hinge 10 to section 9 of the arm, which carries on its upper face stop 11 on either side. The jointed lever is pivoted at 12 to a swinging fulcrum supported in bar 13, pivoted in the frame at 14, the bar being provided with adjustingslots 14e 13a, and is provided with spring 15, having hook 16. The jointed handle carries adjustable roll 17, adj usted, through the medium of slot 18, by boltrand nut 19, the metal bar being in position clamped to the lformer by cam. Handle 9 in carrying antifrictionroll 17 is carried forward and over stop 11, which engages spring 15 and carries the same into the position shown in dotted lines against stop c. When the radius of the curve changes, by taking hold of hook or handle 16 on the spring and raising the parts over stop 11 a curve of less radiusin the band is made. The first curve in the band of less'radius is formed when stop 11 engages spring 15, and from that point until the parts reach stop c the radius is greater than for the remainder of the movement'.
For accommodating bands of different sizes I provide means for adjusting antifrictionroll 17 by loosening the nut 19 and sliding the antifriction-roll into the adjusted positionl and then clamping the same rigidly by nut 19. For adjusting bar 13 I provide bolt and nut 13b and 14". By loosening these nuts the bar can be adjusted endwise, and when adjusted to the right condition the nuts are tightened and the machine is ready to be operated. It should be borne in mind that I provide stop s, against which I hold bar 13 while the jointed handle is being moved from its normal position in Fig. l until stop 11 engages the spring-handle, when both of them are moved for forming the curve of greater radius. The adjustment of bar 13 on the bedpiece or frame is accomplished by bolt and nut 13b, Fig. 4, engaging plate d. By loosening the nut piece 13 is permitted to slide in the direction of its length when both nuts are loosened on plate d, so that when the nuts are turned down on the bolts the adjusted parts are secured together and above spring on bolt 14, v
which holds the parts to the frame, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4. Pivot l2 is not made adjustable. It is always the same, the adjustment of the parts being secured by means of shifting bar 13 in the manner already described.
Changes and modifications Will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and the mechanism illustrated in the drawings is the best form which I have up to date found of practicing my invention.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a metal-bending machine the bedplate or die having a flange and a shoulder, mechanism for clamping the bar to the die, a jointed handle carrying an antifriction-roll pivoted to a connecting-bar, a connecting-bar pivoted to the frame or die and means for engaging the jointed handle with the extension of the bar, combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
2. A frame or die having engaging shoulders, the die being formed with curves having dierent radiuses, mechanism for clamping the metal to the die, a handle pivoted to a pivotal bar, a pivotal bar pivoted to the Inachine and having an extension for engaging a shoulder on the handle and an antifrictionroll on the handle, combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
3. The die having curved shoulders in different radiuses, the bar pivoted to the die and having an extension-hook at its end, a handle pivoted to the bar, an antifric'tion-roll on the handle and means for clamping the end of the :metal to the die, combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
4. The die having shoulders having two different radiuses, an adjustable bar pivoted to the die and having a spring extension, a handle pivoted to the bar, an antifriction-roll pivoted to the handle, stops for limiting the movement of the har and mechanism for clamping the bar to the die combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
5. The die having a flange and ashoulder, a bar pivoted to the die and having a springhook extending beyond the pivotal point of the handle, a handle pivoted to the bar, the handle carrying stops for engaging the eX- tension of the bar and adjustable antif riction-roll adjustably secured to the handle and mechanism for clamping the bar to be operated on the die, combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
6. A die having a flange and a shoulder being formed in a curve having different radiuses, an adjustable bar pivoted to the die and having a spring extension beyond the pivotal point of the handle, a handle pivoted to the adjustable bar and provided with mechanism for engaging the bar to be operated on and a stop for engaging the eXtension of the bar, stops on the die for limiting the movement of the bar and mechanism for clamping the bar to the die, combined, substantially as set forth for the purposes stated.
7. A die having a curved face, a cam operated by the handle for securing the bar to be operated on, a pivoted handle having a hinge,
the handle carrying an 'antifriction-roll forv operating on the metal to conform the same to the shape of the die, mechanism for engaging the pivoted handle and operating with the handle, a stop for limiting the movement of the pivoted handle and engaging mechanism, and mechanism for disengaging the engaging mechanism from the handle combined for the purposes stated.
S. A die having a curved face, mechanism for engaging and clamping the metal to the face of the die, a pivoted handle carrying an antifriction-roll for operating on the metal to conform the same to the shape of the die, mechanism for vengaging the pivoted handle :and movable with the handle, a stop for limiting the movement of the handle and the handle-engaging mechanism, and mechanism for disengaging the movable engaging-mechanism from the handle, combined, substantially as set forth, for the purposes stated.
9. A die having a curved face, mechanism for engaging and clamping the metal to the facel of the die, a pivoted handle carrying an antifriction-roll for operating on the metal to conform the same to the shape of the die, mechanism for engaging the pivoted handle and movable With the handle, a stop for limiting the movement of the handle and the handle-engaging mechanism, and mechanism for disengaging the handle and the engaging mechanism, combined, substantially as set forth, for the purposes stated.
