CARL ADAM NEUBEOKER, OF OFFENBAOH-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR PlTCHlNG INTERNAL SURFACES 0F CASKS 0R BAR EELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,523, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed June 23, 1899. $erial No. 721,563. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL ADAM NEU- BEOKER,a subject of the Grand Duke of Hesse, residing at Offenbach on the Main, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, have in- Vented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Pitching the Internal Surfaces of Oasks, Barrels, or the Like, (for which I have applied for a patent in Germany, dated January 9, 1899, and in Austria, dated May 29, 1899, No. 548,) of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a device for carrying out the well-known process of pitching the inside of barrels, butts, and store-casks in such a manner that by injecting thereinto hot and fresh pitch the old coating of pitch is loosened and a new one laid on the inside of the barrel. Devices for the carrying out of this object have been frequently proposed. The difficulties met with in the construction of these reside in transferring pitch from the boilingpan onto the barrel in an appropriate manner. Hitherto pumps (piston and centrifugal pumps) have been proposed to introduce the boiling pitch into the barrels to be pitched. These mechanical devices present various disadvantages. The moving parts get highly heated by the viscous hot mass and are subjected to a rapid wear. Driving devices for these mechanical apparatus are as a rule not i put down in the places where the pitching is efiected and are difficult to construct. Lastly, the carrying out of the process is-for instance, in the case of pumps worked by handnot without danger on account of the leaks that occur. These disadvantages are entirely obviated by the present invention.
On the drawings, Figure 1 shows the new device in partial vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top View of the boiling-pan. Fig. 3 shows a three-way cock and the pipes branching therefrom. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 representa modified form of the invention. Figs. 7 and 8 show a third modification of the apparatus.
The new device is placed inside an open boiling-pan a of the usual kind. On the bottom of this pan a rests a short perforated cylinder b, which is closed, for instance, by a conically-shaped partition 0, the open apex of which is turned downward. The latter is filled with a light ball-valve m or the like, by
means of which it can be closed. Above the said partition 0 rests a cylinder (1, closed at the top and having such a capacity that it contains a quantity of pitch sufficient to coat completely the inside of a barrel. To the lid of. this cylinder is attached a pipe 6, which leads to a three-Way cock f. A pipe g, extending from the under side of the lid down till it nearly reaches the aforesaid conical partition c, is run to the cradle which supports the barrel to be pitched and carries at its upper extremity an injecting-nozzle. The boiling-pan a is fitted with a coil h, connected to a pipe h and by the pipe b to the three-way cock f, to which is attached a pipe 2', communicating with the atmosphere. The pitch that runs out of the barrel his returned to the pan through the overflow l.
The mode of working of the device is as follows: The pipe h, attached to the coil h, is connected to the compressed-air pipe, which is laid down in every brewery for the purpose of elevating beer by pressure. If the device is not in workthat is to say, if no barrel is being pitched-the three-way cock occupies the position shown in Fig. 3, in which case the space at the upper part of cylinder d is connected with the atmosphere through pipe 6, cock f, and pipe 2'. In this case the pitch penetrates from the surrounding pan a through the perforated cylinder 17, raises ballvalve m, and fills cylinder (1 to such a height that the level of the liquid pitch is the same in pan 1) and cylinder (1. The pitch is thus kept liquid and boiling in the inside of cylinder d. The vapors evolved can escape through pipe e and pipe 1' into the atmosphere.
When a barrel is to be coated internally with pitch, it is placed on the cradle, and the operator has nothing else to do but to turn the three-way cock f from the position shown in Fig. 3 into that shown in Fig. l. The compressed air that has been heated in coil h enters pipe h and passes through three-way cock f into cylinder cl. In consequence of the pressure exerted on the surface ofthe pitch in cylinder d ball-valve m closes the opening in the conical partition 0 and the pitch is pressed upward into pipe 9 and injected into the barrel. When the charge of pitch in cylinder (1 has all been used up, no more will run back through the overflow Z int-o pan a. The operator can then bring three-way cock f into the position shown in Fig. 3, remove the cask that has been pitched, and subject another one to a similar operation.
, The two modifications shown in Figs. 4 to 8 differ from the mode of construction just described in having the pitch-boiling pan closed at the top and the three-way cockf actuated by a pull-rod and bell-crank, one arm of which forms a pedal. The pipe 1', which connects the charging vessel with the atmosphere, is connected to the chimney. The apparatus shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is intended for pitching two barrels at one operation. Besides this the compressed air is heated by means of a simple reservoir in lieu of a coiled pipe.
The largest barrels can be pitched by means of this device even if it is of small dimensions. As soon as the charge of cylinder d has been used up the three-way cockfis turned around, the cylinder again filled up, and the second charge injected into the barrel.
Having thus described my said invention, I declare that what I claim is- 1. An apparatus for coating the interior of casks, the apparatus comprising a pan, a cylinder situated in the pan and having a closed upper end, the lower portion of, the cylinder being perforate, a conical partition situated in the cylinder above the perforate portion thereof, a valve commanding the orifice in the apex of said partition, a pipe leading from the cylinder above the partition to conduct the material to the cask, a second pipe in communication with the upper portion of the cylinder, a cock commanding said pipe and capable of throwing it into communication with the atmosphere, a third pipe connecting with a compressed-fluid source, the third pipe communicating with said cock and the cock being capable of throwing it into communication with the second pipe.
2. An apparatus for coating the interior of casks, the apparatus comprising a pan, a cylinder situated in the pan and having a closed upper end, the lower portion of the cylinder having an orifice, a partition situated in the cylinder above the orifice thereof, a Valve commanding an orifice in the partition, a pipe leading from the cylinder above the partition to conduct the material to the cask, a second I CARL ADAM NEUBECKER.
