ENVELOP-MACHINE.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,818, dated February 6, 1900.

T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST FISCHER, of Barmen, in the Province of Rhenish Prussia, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Apparatus for Envelop and Like Machines, which invention is fully set forth and illustrated in the follow ing specification and accompanying drawwas.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus used with envelop, paper-bag, and the like article making machines which is arranged to fold the blanks in a perfectly new manner; and it consists in a combination of the two known folding systems-to wit, the folding-flaps, which are turnable around a f ulcrum, and folding-rails, which are horizontally shifted forward and backward. By this combination I unite the merits of each of the named systems, overcoming their drawbacks, which consist in the complicated driving means for thefolding-flaps and the sometimes insecure operations of the rail.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of the improved folding device in an acting state. Fig. 2 is a like plan showingtheapparatusinactive. Fig.3isvertioal sectionleft half referring to Fig. 1, right half to Fig. 2.

A denotes the creasing-box, which is fitted on each side with two parallel and longitudinally-running grooves 17, adapted to receive the flat bars a c, the one of which, 0, has connection bya pitman to an eccentric disk of the machine (not shown in the drawings) in order to be shifted by said arrangement to and fro. At the rear end to the bars a is securely fastened a rail d, serving to fold the sealing-flap of the envelop, to which purpose it travels with the bars 0 c. Opposite to the rail d is mounted in the creasing-box a rail 9, being guided between idle rollers and receiving a to-and-fro movement by means of the double-armed levers f turning around a fulcrum f. I One end of said lever is linked to the rail 6, the other being forked, so as to temporarily engage with studs f fixed to the fiat bars a c. This rail is provided to fold the bottom flap of the envelop. Upon the creasing-box are located, in same height with the rails cl e,
left and right, the rails g, serving to fold the end flaps of the envelop. They are guided between the rollers g and moved toward and from each other by slanting slots h, cut into the rails and engaging rollers 71, secured to the bars 0 c.
The motion imparted to the four rails is so timed that the folding action of the end rails takes place first and the action of the other rails successively one after the other as soon as the blank is delivered to the creasing-box by the plunger. (Not shown in the'drawings.) Now it may happen that in folding the flaps, especially the end flaps, which are seized at the exposed edges by the rails and gradually bent down, the free ends of the flaps are fluttering about in the air-stream produced by the movement of the plunger and the rails and said flaps are prevented from being properly folded and overlap one another. To overcome this drawback, I have made the following provisions: By means of a bolt 2' I hinge to each end rail a flap 2', adapted to be turned in an angle of forty-five degrees, so that it can be positioned horizontally and vertically. For this purpose to each rail g is attached a lever k, which can turn around a bolt Z. One end of said lever has linked a forked piece which receives the head of a connecting-bar Q1 the other end of which is hinged to the flap The lever k has an extension 0 to which is applied one end of spring m, that is attached to the flap 2'. To the ends of rail d are adjustably screwed fingers n, which are fitted at their free ends with friction-rollers n, that engage temporarily arms n extending from the levers 7c. The working of this combined device is as follows: When the folding apparatus is open-that is, if all four rails are with drawn-the flaps 11 stand in vertical direction, in which they are held by said fingers a, that take hold on said arms n When the blank is delivered to the creasing-box and the rails shifted together, the end rails first and then the other rails, the arms a are successively released by said fingers n, so that the flaps t' are turned down by the springs m and in such a manner can guide the flaps of the envelop and bend them properly down. The flaps underlie, therefore, a double folding action-namely, by the shifting rails and at the same time by the downturned flaps iin consequence of which always a properlyfolded envelop is produced.
In order that the flaps i are turned down one after another, I have fixed to the rails g a stopper 0, which has eccentrically located its fastening-screw, by means of which I am able to place the stopper more or less within the Way of the lever 70, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, said lever being then prevented from finishing its stroke and the flap is correspondingly withheld in a certain angular position, allowing one flap to overlap the other.
In the present illustrations I have fitted the end rails only with folding-flaps. If found necessary, also, the bottom flap-rail and the sealing-rail may receive fiaps,which are moved in the like manner, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a creasing-box, of
four folding-rails, means whereby the rails are shifted, a folding-flap pivotally attached to each end rail, a lever also attached to each end rail and connected at one end to the folding-flaps, a spring connected to the lever and to the folding-flaps, and fingers adjustably attached to one of the other rails and arranged to operate said levers.
2. The combination with a creasing-box, of four folding-rails, means whereby the rails are shifted, a folding-flap pivotally attached to each end rail, a lever also attached to each end rail and connected at one end to the folding-flaps, a spring connected to the lever and to the folding-flaps, and fingers adjustably attached to one of the other rails and arranged to operate said levers and adjustable stops 0 secured to the end rails'to limit the movement of the levers 7c of the flaps.
