SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,682, dated February 6, 1900.
Applicationfiled May 2, 1899I Serial No. 715,379- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LE GRAND DODGE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to dumping-Wagons having four wheels and a box made in two or more parts.
My object is to produce a four-wheeled dumping-wagon having abox in two or more sections separately mounted and provided with a device whereby both or all of the sections are tilted simultaneously in the same direction and in equal degree controlled and operated by the driver without leaving his seat, a device being also provided to be operated by the driver to unlock the box-sections and at the same time open the tailboard of the rear section or to lock them together and close the tail-board, said tail-board being adapted to both close the rear of the rear box-section and to engage with and support it, being mounted upon or supported by the frame ofthe vehicle, a swinging bail being also carried by said frame and extending across under the box and engaging with the sections at substantially their point of overlapping, thus operating to hold themtightly together to prevent leakage, means being also provided whereby a load-registering in echanism is operated each time the dumping-lever is operated and each load tallied. My dumping-wagon is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wagon closed. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing the Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the wagon from that shown in Fig. 1, the box-sections being locked and the tail-board closed. Fig. 5 is a like View of the same, showing the box-sections unlocked and the tail-board opened ready to be tilted for dumping by the dumping-lever. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of the load-registerin g device, the base being partly broken away.
A is a suitable rectangular frame serving the double purpose of a box=support and a reach and provided with uprights 2 and 8. Across this frame suitable arbors or shafts 4t 5 are mounted or journaled, and upon these the box- sections 6 and 7 are suitablymounted to be tilted. Each of these box-sections has a suitable bottom, sides, and front end, the front end of the rear section 7 operating as a tail-board for the rear open end of the front section 6 and the rear end of the front section overlapping under the front end of the rear section, as indicated by the dotted line 8 in Fig. 2. The sides may also overlap when the front section is widened. A rod 9 is suitably mounted in the uprights 2, and from this depends a swinging tail-board 10, having a flange 11 across its lower edge which hooks under the rear edge of the bottom of the rear section, thus supporting it and making a tighter joint. Its ends can also be flanged to fit into or over the rear ends of the sides of this section, as seen at 12 in Fig. 2. A dumping-rod composed of the sections 13 and 1a is suitably connected to the box-sections at 15 and 16 andto the dumpingdever 17. Upon the frame an adjustable rack 18 is mounted, with which the pawl 19 of the dumping-lever engages, so that the degree of the tilting of these sections is regulated by this rack and pawl, said dumping-lever being suitably mounted upon the frame in position to be readily operated by the driver.
Upon the frame a casing 33 is mounted in which a ratchet-toothed record-wheel 34 is suitably mounted in such relation that when the dumping-lever is thrown forward to return the box-sections to their normal position the swinging pawl 35 will engage with a tooth of said wheel and rotate it the distance of one tooth and display the number of the load just dumped through a suitable opening in the casing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with a frame and dumping-box sections pivoted to be tilted thereon, of a swinging bail across nndersaid frame, a swingingtail-board across the rear end of the rear box-section and engaging therewith to close and support it, a lever, and a rod connecting it to said bail and tail-board whereby both are simultaneously operated to support both of said sections, or to release both to be tilted for dumping.
2. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with tilting box-sections and a dumping-lever operating them, of a swinging pawl upon said lever, and a record-wheel with which said pawl engages to shift it a fixed distance whenever said lever is thrown forward, after said seetionshave been tilted and dumped, to close them.
3. In a du1nping-wagon,a rectangular frame, mounted upon wheels and provided with suitable hangers, and the two sections pivoted in said hangers and adapted to be tilted rearwardly, combined with a single rod 14, connected at its ends to the two sections, a connecting-rod 13, an operating-lever for both dumping and closing the sections, and means for locking thelever in position, substantially as set forth.
4:. A rectangular frame provided with suitable hangers, the two box-sections journaled in said hangers, the connecting-rod 14E fastened at each of its ends to one of the boxsections,a dumping rod, and alever for dumping and returning the said box-sections to position, combined with a standard 9 mounted upon the rear end of the frame, a swinging tail-board which is adapted to engage with the rear end of the rear box-section, and a separate operating mechanism for opening and closing the tail-board, substantially as described.
5. I11 a d um pin gwagon,a rectangular frame provided with hangers, two box-sections journaled in said hangers, and adapted to be dumped backward, the connectingrod 14 for connecting the box-sections together, a conneeting rod and lever, and means for locking the lever in position, combined with a swinging bail, a swinging tailboard, and a rod 21 foreonnecting the bailand the tail-board, and a lever for operating the bail and tail-board simultaneously so that the two box-sections can be dumped, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of April, 1899.
.LE GRAND DODGE.
