CRIMPING AND GOFFERING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,592, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed July 18, 1899.

Be it known that I, LUCIEN EBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gri mping and Goffering Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for goffering and crimping fabric or other blanks used for the manufacture of artificial flowers, the machine being so constructed as to be able to crimp'a large number of blanks at a time.
The invent-ion is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings'form a part.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts inall figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a detail top View of another modification. Fig. 5 shows a part of blank after being crimped and goffered. Fig. 6 shows a vertical section of a modification of my machine; Fig. 7, a top view of the same; Fig. 8, a detail section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7, and Fig. 9 a view showing a modification.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4., and 5, my machine is provided with a hollow base A, having a curved top a, the ends of which are provided with stops 1) and c. A lever B is pivoted to the baseA ata point d. Aclampingpiece 0 is so connected to the leverB that it may be adj ustedin the slot eby the screw f, according to the thickness or number of blanks to be crimped. A release-lever D is provided on the lever B to allow the operator to lift the clam ping-piece O. The top of the base A and the clamping-piece O are provided with ridges or ribs 9. The base A is also provided with a detachable continuous shoulder h, which has the same shape as the ridged portion of i the clamping -piece and which when the clamping-piece slides over it will come in direct contact with the same. The shoulder h extends across the ridges g of the base A and also the depressions or grooves therebetween.

The clamping piece or leverv O is provided with a slot 2', which forms a guide for the shoulder j. The face of the shoulder j fits the ridges of the base Ct and the grooves therebetween and is brought in contact with it by the spring is.
The operation is as follows: The clampingpiece is lifted to the position 0, (shown in dotted lines,) and the blanks are then placed on the portion a, as at a, Fig. 1. The lever D is released, and the spring E acts on the leverD and it in turn on the clamp-piece C. The lever B is now drawn forward to the position B. (Shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.) The shoulder j will during this motion push the blanks along until they strike the stationary shoulder h. The blanks being stopped by the shoulder h, a further movement of the lever B will compress them and form the crimp, at the same time giving the blanks the form of the surface a. The blanks are compressed directly between the shoulders 71. and 3'. Heat is applied to the casing or base A by the burner Z or by any other means, so that the blanks may retain the shape given them in the machine.
During the motion of the clamp C over the surface a the blanks are already partly pressed into the form or corrugations g. The form given to the blank by the corrugations or ridges g is shown in Fig. 5 at g and the crimp at 9 The curved top a may either be part of base A or be detachable therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3. The same may be the case with the corrugated face of the clamping-piece C. This enables the operator to use the same machine for different forms of blanks. The shoulders h andj may also be formed in such a way as to give the crimp any desired intensity on any point of the blanks. Fig. 4 shows the shoulders having each a tapered edge. The result of this is a blank having a very small crimp on the one edge, gradually becoming more intense toward the outer edge.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8 I show a modification of my machine, the base A being a circular shell having a circular top o provided with annular ribs or corrugations g coinciding with the annular ribs or corrugations g of a circular clamping-disk B pivoted on a pin d, whichis screwed into the top 0. A spring E is inserted between the base and circular disk 13 directly between said shoulders. The top a has attached to it a shoulder 72, having any required form and extending across the corrugations g and the grooves therebetween. A lever O is pivoted to a post a and bears on the circular disk 13 at the point I). The disk B has a handle B from which extends a spring o to a post as. A slot in the disk B provides for a continuous shoulder j ,which is attached to a spring and fits the corrugations and grooves of the base-top d After the blanks are inserted between the top and the clamping-disk the lever C is pressed down and the handle is drawn around until the shoulders j and h2 goffer and crimp the blanks. The clamping-disk B may be arranged in such a manner as to be freely taken off the post (1', spring 6 omitted, and the post 61 made smaller in diameter, so that a blank of several leaves may be laid flat on the circular top, allowing the post to pass through hole in the blank.
In Fig. 9 I show a section plan view with the clamping-disk not shown, but showing the should er j of the clamping-disk. The blank or is placed on the circular top a in such a manner that each leaf of the blank will lie between the shoulders 9' and 77. The clamping-disk is then placed over the blank a, rotated as explained above, so that each pair of shoulders j and 7L2 will compress and crimp a leaf.
It is understood that I do not confine myself to the mode of construction shown and described, but that I may make modifications which will come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A crimping and goffering machine, comprising a fixed member provided with anoperative surface consisting of alternately-arranged grooves and ribs, arelatively-movable member which operates in connection therewith and which is provided with an operative surface formed to correspond with and fit said operative surface of said fixed member, each of said members being provided upon its operative surface with a continuous shoulder arranged transversely of the respective grooves and ribs and provided with an operative surface which fits the grooves and ribs of the operative surface of the other member, the relative construction and arrangement of parts being such that when a blank is interposed between said operative surfaces and said movable member is operated said shoulders will compress and crimp said blank directly between the same and further operate as stop devices to limit the movement of said movable member, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a crimping-machine the combination of a circular base having a top provided with grooves, a shoulder attached to said top, a clamping-disk sliding loosely on a post, said clamping-disk also having a shoulder,a spring attached to said disk and acting on said shoulder, a compression-lever pivoted to a post on base, a rotating handle attached to said disk and means for heating the top and disk, substantially as described.
3. A machine of the class described, comprising a concentrically grooved base, a clamping-disk revolubly arranged concentrically thereof and similarly ribbed, said base and said disk being each provided with a continuous shoulder upon their adjacent faces, which shoulders coact to compress a blank imposed between said base and said disk, when said clamping-disk is operated, said clampin g-disk being provided with a spring-retracted operating-handle, substantially as shown and described.
4. A machine of the class described, comprising a concentrically grooved base, a clamping-disk revolubly arranged concentrically thereof and similarly ribbed, said base and said disk being each provided with a shoulder upon their adjacent faces which shoulders coact to compress a blank imposed between said base and said disk when the latter is operated, said clamping-disk being provided with a spring-retracted operating-handle, and said clamping-disk with a compression-lever, substantially as shown, and described.
5. In a machine of the class described, a grooved base and a similarly-ribbed clamping-disk which operates in connection therewith, said clamping-disk being provided with a slot and a movable spring-actuated shoulder therein, and arranged to operate in connection with the groove in said base substantially as shown and described.
6. In a machine of the class described, a grooved base, a correspondin gly-ribbed clamping-disk, a pin connected with said base, and upon which said clamping-disk is slidably and revolubly mounted, a spring interposed between said base and said clam ping-disk, a lever pivoted to said base and slotted to receive said pin, and operating in connection with said clamping-disk to depress the same, and means for revolving said clamping-disk, substantially as shown and described.
