' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,451, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed July 1, 1899. Serial No. 722,548. (No model.)
T 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,WVILLIAM H. HOYT and CLAISON SWARDWELL, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Kite, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in kites; and the object is to provide a tailless in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front View of the kite embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2' of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig 1.
The kite comprises a body portion 1 of any suitable material-such,for instance,as paper or a woven fabric: The side edges of this body portion converge downward to a point and at the upper portion terminate in a head 2, which has its side edges converging upward to a point. A cross-stick 3 is connected to the back of the kite at the junction of the body portion and head portion.
Extended longitudinally at the center of the front of the kite is a web or fin 4 and supported by this web or fin is a vertical stick 5.
I As here shown, the web or fin is made tubular and the stiek.5 removably placed within the same; but it is to be understood that we may rigidly attach the stick 5 to the Web without departing from the spirit of our invention, excepting that the head portion must have a swinging motion relatively to the body.
Preferably, however, we make it removable, so that after removing it and placing it alongside of the cross-stick 3 the kite may be readily rolled up into a small compass.
The kite, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, has the web or fin 4 separated, as at 6, near the crossstick 3. This will permit the head portion 2 to'move back and forth relatively to the stick 5, thus permitting changes in the longitudinal angle of the kite to accommodate it to the wind-pressure.
The bridle 7 of the kite is attached to the upper and lower ends of the stick 5'and provided with a loop 7 a for the attachment of the flying-string 8. Between the loop and the lower attachment of the bridle is a weight 9, so adjusted as to allow the kite to accommodate itself by varying its angle of inclination to the direction of the wind under varying pressures.
It will be noted that the kite has a longitudinal dihedral angle, the object thereof being to so displace the currents of air that they may freely pass from the surface of the kite laterally of the fin, the fin operating to divide the air-current equally at each side.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 Akite, comprisingabodyportion, across stick secured to the back thereof, a web extended longitudinally of the kite at its front, a vertical stick supported by said web, a bridle attached to the upper and lower ends of the vertical stick, and-a weight in the lower stretch of the bridle, substantially as specified.
2. Akite, comprisingabodyportion, having a longitudinal dihedral angle, a cross-stick secured to the back of the kite, a tubular fin extended longitudinally on the front of the kite, and a vertical stick removably placed in the fin, substantially as specified.
