To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HoYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifrietion Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and efficient antifriction side bearing for car-trucks which will combine with the center bearing to receive the weight of the car, the upper portion of which side bearing is so constructed as to readily yield to the pressure -of the body-bolster as it swings in a vertical plane on its center bearin g, which pressure is the result of any variation or change of position of the truck and bodybolster while in use. A further object of my invention is to construct a side bearing in which the antifriction-rollers will always remain in engagement with and in operative position against the bearing-plates of the body-bolster regardless of the lateral swing of the car-body or of the longitudinal swing of the car-truck.
For the above purposes my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. V is a perspective view of the spacing-frame made use, of in carrying out my invention.
1 indicates the truck bolster, and 2 the body-bolster, between the centers of which the usual center bearing 3 is positioned.
In the construction of the side bearing a hollow body or base 4 is provided, said base being in the form of an elongated oval when seen in plan view and being slightly curved in its length, its curvature coinciding with a circle concentric with the 'pivot-point of the truck. This body or base 4 is provided on the lower edge of its exterior with perforated ears 5, by means of which it is bolted to the `truck-bolster, and integral with and projecting upwardly from the bottom of the base is a plurality of hollow posts 6, the openings in the two end ones of which are either square or hexagonal in order to receive nuts 7 hereinafter referred to.
The capplate or cover 8 is constructed to it over the top of the body 4, said cover be- 'ing curved longitudinally, as is the body 4,
and said cover 8 is of such a size as that there is a slight space between its walls and the walls of the body 4. Integral with the under side of the cap or cover 8 and in alinement with the posts 6 are lugs 10, the two/outer ones of which are provided in their tops with rectangular depressions 11. Bolts 12 for retaining the cover 8 upon the body 4 pass through the two outer lugs 10 and into the two outer posts 6, the heads of said bolts occupying the depressions 1l' and the nuts 7, previously mentioned, being positioned on the screw-threaded ends of said bolts within the hollow posts.
Expansive coil-spri'n gs 13 are positioned between the bottom of the body4 and the cover 8, said springs surrounding the hollow posts 6 and the lugs 10. Formed in the top surface of the plate or cover 8 adjacent its ends are dovetailed grooves 14, the same tapering throughout their length, and occupying said grooves are wedge-shaped plates 15, integral with which are upwardly-projecting ribs 16. Integral with the side edges of the top of the plate or grooves 8 are laterally-projecting flanges 17, which extend from one groove 14 to the other. The spacing-frame 18 is of approximately rectangular form,slightly curved to conform to the curvature of the cover 8 and body 4, and integral with the sides of said frame are downwardly-projecting lugs 19, the lower ends of which extend inwardly, thus forming hooks or retaining-fingers 20, which engage beneath the flanges 17 of the cover 8. In the inside faces of the lower portions of the sides of the frame 18 is formed a plurality of oppositely-arranged recesses 21. These recesses serve as bearings for the ends of spindles 22, on which are rotatively arranged antifriction-rollers 23, there preferably being a plurality of said rollers positioned on each spindle and separated. from each other by IOO washers 24. These rollers bear directly upon the top surface of the cover 8 and also against bearing-plates 25, carried by the bod y-bolster. The travel of the spacing-frame 18, carrying the rollers 23, is limited by the ribs 1G, and as the plates l5, carrying said ribs, pass through the recesses 11,'occupied by the heads of the bolts 12, said bolts are locked in position and cannot be moved until the plates l5 are withdrawn from said grooves.
The expansive coil-springs 13 continually exert a pressure upwardly, thereby retaining the rollers against the bearing-plates 25, carried bythe car-bolster 2, and as the truck swings upon its pivot when the car is passing around a curve the friction between the truck and the car-body is reduced to a minimum and the strain upon the bearing-points is greatly relieved.
By constructing the cover 8 larger than th body 4 and allowing the space between the walls of said cover and body said cover can readily tilt or swingin any direction and yield to anyV differential movement ot' the bodybolster relative the truck-bolster. (See dotted lines, Figs. III and IV.) By providing the springs 13 to retain the rollers 23 againstV the plates 25 a perfect bearing between the parts is always insured, regardless of the lateral swing ot` the car-body or the lateral or longitudinal swing of the car-truck. The nuts 7, being positioned in the angular openings in the posts 6, are locked upon the bolts l2, and as said bolts l2 are held in position by the plates 14 the antifriction-rollers and the cover S cannot accidentally become detached from the body 4 while in use.
\Vith side bearings as ordinarily constructed and used in connection with a center bearing the body-bolster is carried under normal conditions entirely by the center bearing and only contacts with the side bearings when it swings excessively in a vertical plane upon its center bearing, or if the body-bolster bears normally on the side bearings as well as the center bearing (a construction sometimes adopted) it leaves one or the other of the side bearings when it swings excessivelyin a Vertical plane on its center bearing, and in coming back to its normal position the bearings are pounded and injured, whereas with my construction the side bearings arein constant engagement with the body-bolster and assist the center bearing in carrying the load, and the pounding of the body-bolster on its side bearings never occurs. 1
While I have shown and described the base 4 ot the side bearings as being secured to the truck-bolster and the antifriction-rollers as bearing against the body-bolster, it is obvious that the bearing might be turned over and the part 4 secured to the body-bolster, while the antifriction-rollers rest against the truckbolster.
I claim as my inventionl. In combination with the truck and body bolstcrs having a center bearing, side bearings carried by the truck-bolster and consisting each of a fixed base, a capfitting over the base, antifriction-rollers carried by the cap, and springs located between the base and the cap for keeping the rollers in constant engagement with the body-bolster as the latter oscillates in a vertical plane on its center bearing, said cap being larger than the base so as to oscillare without coming inl contact with the base, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the truck and body bolsters having a center bearing, side bearings carried by the truck-bolster and consisting each of a fixed base, a cap located over the base, antifriction-rollers journaled in a spacing-frame movably held to said cap, and sprin gs located between the base and the cap, to retain the rollers in constant engagement with the body-bolster as the latter oscillates in a vertical plane upon its center bearing, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the truck and body bolsters having a center bearing, side bearings consisting each ot a Ibase secured to the truck-bolster, a cap fitting over and inclosing the upper part of the base, antifriction-rollers journaled in a spacing-frame movably held to the cap, and springs located between the base and cap for holding the antifrictionrollers in constant engagement with the bodybolster as the latter oscillates in a vertical plane upon its center bearing; said cap being larger than the base so as to oscillate without coming in contact with the base, substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with the truck and body holsters having a `center bearing, side bearings carried by the truck-bolster and consisting each of' a base, a cap fitting over the base,
a spacing-frame fitting over the cap and movably held thereto by means of lugs, antifriction-rollers journaled in said spacing-frame, and springs located between the base and the cap for holding the antifriction-rollers in constant engagement with the body-bolster as the latter oscillates in a vertical plane upon its center bearing, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with the truck and body holsters having a center bearing, side bearings carried by the truck-bolster and consisting each of` a base, a cap fitting over the base, a spacing-frame fitting over the cap and connected thereto by means of lugs, stops for limiting theV movement of the spacing-frame, antifriction-rollers journaled in the spacingframe, and springs located between the base and the cap for holding the antifriction-rollers in constant engagement with the bodybolster as the latter oscillates in a vertical plane upon its center bearing, substantially as set forth.
