SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,386, dated January 30, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORG SZIMAY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Buda-Pesth, Austria-Hungary, have invented a certain new and Improved. Multiple-Cylinder Air-Compressing Engine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to multiple-- cylinder air-compressing engines; and the object is to increase the efficiency of the same, at the same time rendering the construction as simple as possible.
The invention consists, essentially, in the peculiar combination of four cylinders and their suction and pressure connections, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims, and in order to render the present specification more easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the engine, showing two of the valves in section. Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 a detail longitudinal section through the mechanism for positively operating two of the valves.
The four cylinders c c c c are arranged in pairs on the bed-plate f, each pair having the cylinder-glands and stuffing-boxes opposite each other and being provided with a common piston-rod 0 These are again rigidly coupled by means of the cross-pin 0 on which the fork g of the connecting-rod g engages. The other end of the connecting-rod g is attached to the crank s of the crank-shaft s, which is mounted in bearings ll at the forward end of the bed-plate f and provided with a fly-wheel s and a large chain-wheel z. This latter is connected by means of a chain 2 with a small chain-wheel .2, fast on a shaft 61., mounted in bearings Z, parallel to the shaft 5' and being turned either by hand by means of the handle of the wheel a or by machinepower by means of the pulley 1'. Each cylinder is provided with two outlets n, one at either end of the same, for pipe connections, and the said cylinders are connected up in the following manner:
For the convenience of the present specification the stufiing-box end of each cylinder will be called the forward end and the other the rear end. The rear ends of the two cylinders 0 care connected by a pipe at and those of the cylinders c by a pipe 61. The pipes d and d communicate with the pressurereservoir to at either end of the same by means of pipes (1 in which are mounted back-pressure valves 2' and 'i, one at either end of the reservoir or between it and the cross-pipes d d at any suitable point, Fig. 1. At either side of the central pipes d pipes 19 b communicate'from the pipe d to the forward ends of the two cylinders c 0, while similar pipes h h communicate from the cross-pipe cl to the forward ends of the two cylinders c c. The forward ends of all four cylinders communi cate with the open air by means of valves 20 and u, arranged below the openings 0m, Figs. 1 and 3. Above the said openings 11 n of the forward end of each cylinder a back-pressure valve 0 0 is mounted. The valves 10 ct are advantageously positively operated, being held normally closed by a spring and being opened at the required moment by means of a pawl q, pivotally connected to a frame q, fixed between the ends of the open pipes of two opposite cylinders. The pawls q are alternately operated by means of a sliding arm p, parallelly guided in bearings p, mounted on the frame g, said slide-arm being worked by an eccentric e on the shaft 3' and its eccentric-rod e, which engages at the center or thereabout of the slide rod or arm p, being pivotally connected thereto. The reservoir '40 is provided with an outlet m for the com pressed air'and a safety-valve 0 of the ordinary construction.
The engine operates in the following manner: If the pistons of all the cylinders are moved in a direct-ion toward the shaft .9, air will. pass by suction into the rear ends of the cylinders c 0, through the valves u 0', along the pipes 12 and cl and to the front ends of the cylinders c 0, direct through the valves 11/ and openings 11. At the front ends of the cylinders c c and the rear ends of the cylin-- ders c c the air will be compressed, passing from the former along the pipes h, d, and d into the reservoir 20 and from thelatter directly along the pipes d and d and through the valve '11. On the opposite stroke of the engine air will be drawn by suction into the front ends of the cylinder 0 c and the rear ends of those 0 c in the first case through the valves u u direct to the said cylinders and in the second case through these valves along the pipes h and (1, while air will be compressed in the front ends of cylinders c c and in the rear ends of the cylinders c c, in the former case passing along the pipes b b 61 through valve 1' and pipes (1 into the opposite end of the reservoir wand in the second case directly along the pipe d through valve 1' and pipes (1 Thus will it be seen that the arrangement of pipes is suchthat each set will act alternately as suction and pressure set, which is the object of the invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. In an air-compressing engine the combination of four cylinders arranged in pairs, the front ends of the pairs facing each other and the cylinders in one pair opposite to and in line with a cylinder in the other pair, pistons in the cylinders, two piston-rods connecting the pistons in the opposite cylinders, means for rigidly connecting the two pistonrods and for reciprocating the four pistons simultaneously, pipes placing one end of each cylinder in communication with an end of the cylinder opposite, valve-controlled airinlets to admit air into said pipes, a pressurercservoir, and valve-controlled communications between the reservoir and pipes, whereby air is admitted to the suction ends of the four cylinders and expelled from the pressure ends simultaneously.
2. In an air-compressing engine, the combination of four cylinders arranged in pairs, the front ends of the pairs facing each other and thecylinders in one pair opposite to and in line with a cylinder in the other pair, pistons in the cylinders rigidly connected and means for reciprocating the'same, four pipes, each communicating with the rear end of one cylinder and extending toward the opposite cylinder, air-inlet valves in the free ends of said pipes, a check-valve in each of said pipes opening toward the cylinder with the rear end of which it communicates, communications between said opposite cylinder and the said pipes at a point in the latter between the valves above mentioned, a pressm'ereservoir, valve-controlled connection between the reservoir and the said pipes and means for positively actuating the air-inlet valves.
