Beitknown that LZEBULON FRANCIS HIGH- SMITH, a citizen of the United States residing at Lumberton, in the county of Robeson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamplighters or Light-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a device for lighting and extinguishin g lamp'lights, gas, and other lights.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the main wheel and tank in dotted lines, the mechanism in full lines, and in dotted lines showing different positions of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device constructed to light and extinguish a gas-jet. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section of the main wheel and the under ratchet-wheel. Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the lever, of the catch, of the pivoted arm, of the driving-pin, and of the trip. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the device for lighting the match and of the arm for attaching the same to the baseplate of the device. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the match-holders.

My invention is described as follows:

In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the main wheel, provided on its periphery with notches 2, which operate the arm 3, the lower end of which is pivoted to the extreme end of an arm 4, pivoted on the base-plate 5 of the device. This arm at is integral with another arm 6, in the extreme end of which is secured the outer end of a coil-spring 7, its inner end being secured to the pivot 8. These two arms 4: and 6 have integral with them another arm 9, which has secured to its outer end a spring 10, carrying on its free end a cap 11, adapted to extinguish the light from the burner 12.

14c is a guide for the arm Attached to the outer face and to the periphery of the wheel 1 are match-holders 15. These holders are provided each with a sleeve 16 to hold a match 17. Each one of the sleeves 16 has a slit 18, so that the sleeve will readily grasp and hold the match. (See Fig. 7.)

19 is a match-scratch composed of a sheet of spring metal faced with a sheet of metal having a roughened face. This match-scratch 19 is secured to the base 5 by means of an arm 20 in such position that when the wheel 1 is rotated in the direction of the arrows the matches 17 in the sleeve 16 will one after another scratch against the match-scratch 19 and become ignited and touch off the wick in the burner 12, (or the gas-jet 27,) the cap 11 having been first raised by rotation of the wheel 1, operating on the arm 3, which in turn operates arms 4 and 9, spring 10, and cap 11. The normal position of the cap 11 is down. As wheell goes around the curved end 21 of the arm 3 ca ches in the notches 2 and raises the cap, and when the cap is thus raised the wick may be ignited.

The manner of extinguishing the light is as follows: Lever 22 is pivoted to the front face of plate 5that is, between plate 5 and the rear face of the small ratchet-wheel 23. To this lever 22 is pivoted arm 33, having trip 34: and pin 24,, and when this lever 22 is pulled to the left said pin 24 catches in one of the notches 25 of the wheel 23 and pulls said wheel 23 to the left one notch,which also moves the outer wheel one notch, these two wheels 1 and 23 being rigidly secured to each other. This therefore brings the wheel 1 around to the left one notch and raises the cap 11 or turns the thumb-screw 26 and turns the gas on through the gas-jet 27. To turn off the gas or extinguish the burner, by throwing down the cap 11 I allow the lever 22 to be pushed back to its normal position to the right by means of the spring 28, and as it is thus pushed back by said spring 28 the spring 29 catches in one of the notches of the wheel 30 and pushes it back to the left one turn. This throws one of the points 31 of the catch 32 down against the short end of the pivoted arm 33 and holds it out firmly in position, as shown in Fig. 5, the wheel 30 being rigidly secured to its pivot-rod on the front face of the lever 22, while the catch 32 is rigidly secured to the other end of said pivot-rod on the rear face of said lever 22. Then another pull on the lever 22 throws the trip 34 up against the upper part of the rod 3 and knocks it out of the notch 2, when it immediately falls back to a lower notch on the right, which action throws the cap 11 down on the burner 12 and extinguishes the light or turns the thumb-screw 26 of the gas-jet back to its nor mal position and turns off the gas. Then the trip 34 falls back to its normal position of its own weight, as shown in Fig. 2, and the device is again ready to relight the lamp or touch off the gas.

The greatimportance of this device may be readily seen. A cord may be attached to the perforated end of lever 22 and the other attached to some place immediately near the door, so that when a man goes to enter his room or his store he may light the lamp or the gas in any part of the room, and another cord may be attached to the perforated end of the lever and carried to his bed, so that he may spring a light on the suspicion of any noise in his dwelling or store. The uses in this line to which this device may be put, will readily suggest themselves to the mind and it is not necessary that I attempt to elaborate them here.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A light lighter and extinguisher, consisting of a plate 5; a double wheel, consisting of the part 1, havingin its periphery ratchetnotches 2, and a part 23, in its periphery having notches 24; match-holders 15, secured to the outer face and periphery of the wheel 1; levers 4, 6, and 9, integral with each other at their inner ends and pivoted to the plate 5; rod 3, one end pivoted to the outer end of lever 4, its other end adapted to catch in the notches 2; lever 9, carrying a spring 10, and a cap 11, on the extreme end of spring 10; spring 7, adapted to operate levers 4, and 9; scratch 19, secured to the plate 5, its roughened end impinging against the periphery of the wheel 1, and adapted to ignite a match; lever 22, pivoted through the center of the wheels 1, and 23, and to the plate 5; arm 33, pivoted to said lever 22; pin 24, extending from one side of the arm 23; trip 34, secured to the end of arm 33, and adapted to throw the free end of rod 3, out of notches 2, of the Wheel 1; ratchet-wheel 30, pivoted to the lever 22; spring 29, adapted to turn Wheel 30, backward to theleft, when the lever 22, moves to the right; catch 32, rigidly secured to the pivot-pin of the wheel 30, its points 31, adapted alternately, to catch against the short end of the arm 33, and to hold the trip 34, up in position to strike the free end of the rod 3, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.

2. A light lighter and extinguisher, consisting of a plate 5; a double wheel, consisting of the part 1, having inits periphery ratchetnotches 2, and a part 23, having in its peripheryratchet-notches 24; match-holders 15, having slits 18 secured to the periphery of the wheel 1; rod 3, working in guide 14, and having one end adapted to catch in the notches 2, of the wheel 1, and its other end pivoted to the free end of the lever 4; said lever 4, connected to a device adapted to turn on or shut off the gas from a gas-jet; scratch 19, impinging against the periphery of the wheel '1, and adapted to ignite the match; lever 22, pivoted through the center of the wheels 1, and 23, to the plate 5; arm 33, pivoted to said lever 22, and carrying pin 24, and trip 34, adapted to throw rod 3, out of notches 2; ratchet-wheel 30, pivoted' to the lever 22; spring 29, adapted to turn the wheel 30, to the left; catch 32, rigidly secured to the pivotpin of the wheel 30, its points 31, adapted, alternately, to catch against the short end of the arm 33, and hold the trip 34, up in position to strike the free end of the rod 3, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
