JOSEPH A. MILLER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letter'8,Patent No. 63,923, lated April 16, 186i'.
IMPROVEMENT IN ,STEAM GENERATORS.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY ooNoEEN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A.' MILLER, of the city, county, and State of New `York, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Steam Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being hadrito the accompanying drawing, marked C, forming part-ofthis specification, and in which- Y Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a boiler constructed according to my improvement, taken through the line n n in fig. 2. Y
Figure 2, a horizontal section thereof, through the line wr w in fig. l; and
Figure 3, a similar View, through the line y y in g. 1.'
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several gures. v
The nature of the invention includes an annular or other shaped water base arranged below the grate, and having mounted upon and in communication with it an inner and outer row or series of Water tubes, the inner row being the smaller of the two, and being in communication at their tops with a hollow dome or root` to the fire situated within a cylinder or space, and the outer shell of which dome is open at the top at or about the water level to the steam space of said cylinder, which has smoke tubes connected with it, -the stack running up through it, and is connected at its bottom with the Water base by the larger and outer row of' pipes surroundingthe Jdre-box, and that form return-water spaces, while the inner and smaller row of pipes and hollow dome con L stitute isolated sheet or thin -Water spaces and steam generators proper.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the boiler, which is represented as of vertical cylindrical character,
has arranged below the level of its grate, A2, a water base, B2, which may be ofannular form, and has mounted onv and connecting with it an inner and outer row of vertical water. tubes, O2 Dz, the inner ones, C2, being smaller than the outer ones, and forming sides and back to the lire-chamber'Ezl Said small tubes, C2, communicate at their tops with a water-jacket or space,l,r]2, of a conical or other suitably-'shapedre-hox roof, F2, arranged to project upwardly within an urpcr chamber or cylinder, G2, to thewalter le'vel. This Water-jacket or space g2 and tubes C2 form iilm or thin isolated water spaces andisteam generator proper, upon which the re is made to act direct to the exclusion of the. remaining or main body 'of water in the boiler, whichremaining body or portion is con-y tained withiuthe cylinder (i2 iu the space surrounding the water-jacket gzand Within the return-water tubes D that connect the cylinder Gj at its bottom with the Water base The-steam generated i-n the isolated Water 'spaces G2 and g2 has a ready and free escape without passing through a superincumbent body of water into the steam space in the upper portionof the cylinder GJ, and round or over-a detlecting plate, h2, in -to a steam dome, H2, while any water carried over the Waterjacket g2 by the steam serves to keep up4 a'eirculation by its return or dow Qf water down lthe return tubes D'3 into the Water base B'L below the grate., The smoke and gaseous products pass oif from the re-chamber E2 up smoke -tubes I2 in the, cylindenGr'l into a smoke-box, J2, sui`-` rounding the steam dome and oil' up the stack K2. I
By this construction and arrangement most or/all of the heat is utihzed. If desired, the water space may be continued by en annular cylinder `surrounding the return pipes l)2 from thecylinder Gr2 to the water base B below, andthe boiler be suitably built u'p `in outer brick-Work; or, which admits of more freedom foil expansion oil-the several parts, it may be suspended' at its upper part by4 knees, "i", on a lower brick or other support, as represented in fig. 1. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.`
The combination of the waterl base B2, grate A2, steam-generating tubes C2, and jacket g'f, to the tire-bor; roof F2, cylinder or upper chamber G", return-water -pipes D2, and smoke tubes I2, the whole being arranged relatively to each other substahtially as specified. A.
JOSEPH A. MILD-ER.
