UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

WILLIAM A. MERRALLS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.

MORTAR FOR STAMP-BATTERIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,472, dated November 21, 1899.

Application filed July 7, 1899. Serial No. 723,044. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MERRALLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented c'ertain new and useful Improvements in -Mortars for Stamp-Batteries, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mortars for stamp-batteries, the object of my invention being to provide a motar which, while having a large capacity in proportion to its size, shall enable different ores or ores of different mines or owners to be passed through simultaneously, reduced to pulp, and discharged to the amalgamating-plates Without commingling, so that the product of each body of ore may be separately ascertained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a three-stamp battery constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.

My improved mortar 1 has a row of chambers 2 for the stamps 3, the rear wall 4 of the mortar having a row of feed-holes 5, one for each chamber. Independent feed-chutes 6 are provided to discharge the ore into the respective chambers. The front wall 7 of the mortar has a row of screen-openings in front of the respective chambers covered by screens 8, and said front wall has an aperture 9 be tween each pair of such screen-openings. Lateral discharge-screens 10 may be passed through said apertures and are supported in guides 11. Lateral screens 15 are also provided at the ends of the mortar. Above each aperture is a vertical transverse partition 12 and below and parallel with each partition are grooves 13 in the casing of the mortar,

serving as upper and lower guides for the removable Vertical partitions 14E.

It will be seen that each of the stamps has a triple discharge-that is, through the front screen and the two lateral screens. Thus the pulp is discharged as soon as sufficiently fine,

and does not become slimy; also, that the partitions 12 and 14 completely separate the ore reduced by one stamp from that in the adj oining chamber, so that ores of different character can be put through the same mill and the products therefrom maintained separate throughout the entire operation.

I claim- A mortar for a stamp-battery having a row of chambers, the rear Wall of the mortar having a row of feed-holes adapted for feeding into the respective chambers and independent feed-chutes therefor, and the front wall having a row of screen-openings in front of the respective chambers, said front wall having an aperture between each pair of screen-openings, said apertures being adapted to receive a pair of lateral discharge screens, and the mortar-casing being provided with guides for holding said screens in place, a vertical transverse partition in the mortar above each aperture, upper and lower guides below each partition, and removable vertical partitions sliding in said guides and separating the lateral screens so held in place, substantially as described.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

WM. A. MERRALLS.
