SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,311, dated November 21, 1899.

Be it known that we, JOHN 0. WHEELER and JOHN J. DUKET, citizens of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Skirt and Waist Holders, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a skirt and waist holder, and has for its object to provide an inexpensive and efficient device of the kind adapted when applied to support the wearing-apparel to relieve the hips from a portion of the weight of the skirt and to prevent the skirt from sagging and the waist from separating therefrom at the belt.

A further object is to provide a skirt and waist holder adapted to be readily attached to and detached from the wearing-apparel without mutilating the fabric thereof and that when in operative position will be antomatically locked against detachment; fur thermore, to provide such a holder that when in use will be entirely hidden from view.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a like View showing the adjustable support attachable to the rear eyelets of the corset. Fig.3 is a side View of the holder in operative application. Fig. 4is afront view of the safety-pin lock, and Fig. 5 is a front View of a modified form of the safety-pin that may be substituted for the one shown in Fig. 1.

The objects of our invention are accomplished by providing a pair of curved bars 1, preferably slightly S-shaped, pivotally secured to each other at their lower ends in inverse relation by means of a rivet the head of which is provided with a button 2, from which a skirt (not shown) may be detachably supported and to which the waist of a dress may be also simultaneously secured in the manner hereinafter described.

Upon each of the bars 1, at the upper terminals thereof, there are formed hooks 3 by bending the metal of the bars outward and downward, and by means of these hooks the supporting-section of'the device may be readily attached to or detached from the eyelets 4:, provided for the rear lacing of the corset,

and it will be seen that as thus constructed the hooks 3 of the supporting-bars can be attached to corsets of varying width between the eyelets for the rear lacing.

In order to support a skirt from button 2, we have provided a safety-pin 5, pivotally secured to the face of a plate 6, which has a central incut 7 at right angles to the pin of a width to receive the stem 8 of the button. The upper bar 9 of the pin, by which it is pivoted to plate 6, is bighted between its pi-votal bearings in the direction of the opening to the incut, whereby when the pin is turned at right angles to the plate 6 the plate may be readily attached to or detached from the button by its incut; but when in operative position, with the skirt suspended therefrom, the bar 9 crosses the incut below the button and prevents the plate 6 from being detached therefrom.

In its position attached to the corset when the waist is put on the material of the waist loosely covers the button 2. To simultaneously secure the waist and skirt thereto, pin 5 (being first attached in proper position to the inner face of the waistband of the skirt) is raised at right angles to its plate 6, which is then pushed down over the stem of the button, compressing the material of the waist over and around the button and between the plate and the bars 1 of the supporting-section, thereby securing the waist to the button, and when the skirt is dropped the bar 9 of pin 5 is brought below the button 2, thereby locking its plate from accidental detachment therefrom. So attached, all parts of the holder will be hidden from View, a portion of the weight of the skirt will be supported by the corset, and the waist will be held down at the back and prevented from separating from the skirt at the belt-line.

We may also em ploya safety-pin 10, (shown in Fig. 5,) having a bight 11 formed therein for attachment to the supporting-button 2 and adapted by its spring action to so engage the stem of the button as to prevent accidental detachment therefrom, and therefore do not desire to be limited to the pivoted form of pin 5 The device is of a neat appearance and cheap construction and provides an efiicient angles to the pin, of a width to receive the stem of the button, and a bight formed in the pivot-bar of the pin, adapted to admit access I5 to or close egress from the incut by the stem of the button.
