l Be it known that I, ELMER I. GAY, of Quincy, in the coun'ty of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Tags, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains or with which itis most nearly connected to make and use the same.

My present invention relates to tags for attaching price-marks or other identifyingmarks to garments, dry goods, or the like and is intended to provide a thoroughly satisfactory article of this class, which shall be cheap and simple in construction and capable of being easily affixed to the goods without leaving any projecting points or edges to catch into or to interfere with the proper laundering of such articles as they may be applied to.

To this end my invention comprises a tag formed of a single piece or blank and com- -prises two substantially equal members or sections, one of which is provided with a longitudinally-extending tongue or point and the other of which is supplied with a transverse slot or opening which is so constructed as to readily permit the insertion of the said tongue from the outside to the inner face after the tongue has been folded around the end of the member in which the slot is formed. One of the two members is also provided with a pair of parallel or approximately parallel slots or cuts, into which a small strip or piece of tape, marked with suitable distinctive marks or initials, may be drawn, the said slots also serving to hold the marking-piece or label securely to the tag.

Referring now to the drawings, in which I have illustrated a form of my improved tag or label affixer, Figure l is a plan view of the unfolded blank which forms myimproved tag. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the saine suitably affixed to a piece of goods. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View of the same, showing the manner in which the tongue is secured in place. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the tag secured to the goods and having a piece of paper or fabric inserted in the slots thereof, as will be hereinafter described.

My v device is constructed from a single piece of metal and comprises the two members or lobes et and b, which are of substantially equal length and are joined together by a connecting portion c. The member ais provided with an elongated tongue or point d at its Iouter end. The member b, near its outer end, is formed with a small slot e. This slot has its edges preferably slightly offset from each other. The dotted line xx indicates approximately the line of fold. When it is desired to affix the tag to a garment or piece of goods, the blank is bent or folded along this dotted line till one member lies approximately parallel with the plane of the other. The device in this folded form is then passed over the edge of the goods, and the point or tongue d is bent around the outer end of the member b and is pushed into the slot e. The raised edgel or lip on the other side of the slot facilitates the pushing of the tongue through the slot.

It will thus be seen that owing to the novel formation of the blank and the location of the tongue the tag is held positively and securely in place, so that there is no danger or liability of its being slipped off from the piece of goods to which it is attached, while at the same time the pointed tongue by which it is thus positively secured is crowded down between the two members or leaves of the tag and lies inside of them, so that no. projecting edge or point is left which is capable of catching into goods laid upon it or in any wayinterfering with the action of any of the laundering-machines in case the tag is used to identify goods that are being laundered.

'The member ais also provided with two opposing or approximately parallel slots or cuts f. A piece of paper, linen, or the like may have its two ends thrust through these slots, leaving its middle portion lying on the outside face of the member d. Upon this middle portion can be written or stamped price-marks or any identifying-marks that the user may desire to employ for his particular purpose.

The entire device can be formed at a single operation of the die. It presents no lprojecting edges, folds, or points to cause annoyance by catching upon the goods and is yet positively and sim ply held aga inst any accidental displacement or removal from the goods.

Having,r thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though Without attempting to set forth allot' the forms in which it may be made or allof the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed isl. A tap,r for dry goods or thelike consisting of apiece of sheet metal comprisingtwo members of approximately equal length adapted to be folded together, one upon the other, oneA member beingr provided with an elongated tongue projecting from its outer end, the other member being formed with a transverse slot whose edges are offset relatively to each other to facilitate the ready insertion of the aforesaid tongue from the outer to the inner face thereof when the tag is folded and means for retaininga labelon one of said members, substantially as described.

2. The tag formed of the sheet-metal blank comprising the member a provided with the projecting tongue d and the retaining-slotsf, and the member b provided with the transverse slot e having the oset edge adapted to deflect the point of the tongue'to the inside of the tag substantially as described.
