c. n. m m u u UNITED STATES PATENT EFTC'EQ EMIL T; DREiEE, or HANAPEPE, HAWAH.
wATER-'i-'ILTEE- SPEIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,095, dated November 14, 189. Application led May 81,1899. Serial No. 7183828. (No mod-el.)
To dll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL T. DREIEE, of Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii, have invented a new and Improved Water-Filter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in water-filters designed particularly for household use, although capable of other use; and it consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying which projects from the lower head C of the cylinder or casing A. This lower head is secured to the casing A by having a threaded flange C' screwing upon the lower end of the casing, and the upper end of the casing is closed by a screw-head B, which is secured to the casing in a similar manner.
At the center of the upper head is a projecting boss b, which has a hole passing through the same and threaded to receive the watersupply pipe I, provided with a valve J, by means of which the iow of water through the filter may be regulated.
The cylinder G, besides having the longitudinalbore mentioned, has anumber of small boresor passages g, extending from said central bore to the exterior of the cylinder. These are filled with a brous filtering material, as sponge, which permits the water to reach the central carbon stick H more readily than would be possible through the body of the cylinder G, and yet filters 'and delays the water somewhat. Within the central bore is placed a stick H of carbon or similar ltering material. The cylinder G is suliiciently smaller than the casing A to leave a water-passage about the cylinder.
The headvC is provided with a central boss C3, which has a central passage communicat- This cylinder at its lower' end or base screws into a circular ange C2,
ing with the end ofthe carbon stick ri and threaded exteriorly to receive the threaded collar d of the chamber D. This chamber D is herein shown as being of spherical shape and is illed with sand K. Within its lower end is screwed a plug E, which is provided wit-h a central bore or passage, through which the Water escapes from the ilter. This plug extends some distance within the sand-receiving chamber D and has the inner extension E' thereof provided with perforations, forming, in eiect, a sieve to permit the escape of the water while retaining the sand. This plug is also provided with a valve F, by means of which the iiow of water may be controlled.
The operation of the device is as follows l The upper end of the casing A is connected with any suitable-source for water, as a faucet I. W'ater is admitted betweenthe casing A and the cylinder G and obtains access to the central filtering-stick H through the holes g, which are iilled with a fibrous material, as sponge. Water after filtering through the carbon stick H enters the sand-chamber K, where it is further iltered, being discharged through the valve E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Aiilter, comprisinga casing having awater-supply connection thereto, a cylinder extending within said casing and having a longitudinal bore therein, and exteriorly connecting passages extending outwardly from said bore, and a carbon filtering-stick in said bore, the casing having a discharge-passage communicating with one end of the carbon stick, substantially as described.
2. A filter, comprising a casing havingawater-supply connection therewith, a removable cap having a discharge connection therewith, a cylinder adapted to be secured to the said cap within the casing and having a central bore, and openings communicating from said bore tothe exterior of the cylinder, said cylinder being smaller than the casing to provide a water-space between them, a carbon stick filling the bore of the cylinder, and a water discharge communicating with said bore, substantially as described. Y
3. A lter, comprisinga casing having awater-supply connection therewith, a removable ICO cap having a discharge connection, a cylinder filled chamber communicating with said bore, adapted to be secured to said cap Within the and a screen-protected discharge therefor, Io casing and having a central bore, and opensubstantially as described.
