To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that we, PETER SOMMER, JOHN SOMMER, and PETER W. SOMMER, citizens of the United States, residing at Tremont, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Fabric-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovements in fabric-reels,by means of which a reel is provided that is very efficient for the purpose designed.
More particularly, our invention relates to a fabric-reel designed to be applied to a fabricmaking machine and toact and operate automatically in connection therewith. The particular machine in connection with which it has been used is shown in our application for fabric-machine filed February 3, 1894, Serial No. 499,016, and by reference to the said application for patent the manner of applying the reel and its operation in connection therewith may clearly be seen.
In carrying out our invention we have in view the construction of a reel mechanism that possesses the ordinary mechanical parts that are necessary to wrap or roll up fabric and the combination with such common and ordinary parts of particular mechanism for carrying out special functions which are auxiliary to the main working parts and dependent upon the operation of said ordinary parts. These particular features consist of means for regulating the wrapping or rolling up of the fabric in such a manner as that the draft which originates in the reel-cylinder is always uniform and means for controlling or limiting the extent or length of intermediate movements of the reel-cylinder to accommodate the difference in size of the reel of fabric that is being wrapped thereon, and incidentally of means for takin g off or relieving the machine generally from excessive jars or shaking incident to the operation of the reel mechanism. We do not desire to limit ourselves in the use of this reel or wrapping device to the particular application that is here shown, but desire to make a general application of the same to any fabric-making machine or any machine for producing a fabric or strand that it is necessary to roll or wrap up.
That our invention may be more fully understood, reference is had tothe accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of our reel device shown mounted upon a portion of the framework of afabric-making machine, the particular manner of mounting the said reel being shown herein and is shown in combination with the complete machine in said application for patent on fabric-making machine bearing Serial No. 499,016. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a movable frame upon which the working parts of the reel are designed to be mounted. Fig. 3 is a detailed View showing' a section through a portion of the framework of the machine and through the shifting frame on line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is also a detailed view showing a section through the frame andother parts on line Y Y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detailed View showing a section through the frame and other parts at the pivot-point of the barf.
In the drawings, A is the reel-shaft upon a machine, around which may be constructed any suitable frame structure upon which the fabric is designed to be wrapped.
B is a shiftable frame mounted upon the main framework O of the machine and is supported upon a horizontally-bearing part. We provide this shiftable frame for supporting the reel and other working parts of the reel mechanism, and we hold the said shiftable frame under tension and in such a manner that it may move back and forth when the proper impulse is applied and will return to a normal position or to an intermediate position when such impulse or tension is wholly or partially removed. i The particular means we have adopted for holding the adjustable frame under tension consists of an equalizing mechanism connected with the frame to insure a uniform direction and extent of movement, which consists of the lever ot, pivoted to the main framework, as at b, at one extremity, the particular manner of mounting the said lever being shown in detail in Fig. 3, the said bar bearing across the machine being supported upon the opposite side IOO from the pivoted point in the manner shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
(l is a bar connected pivotally at the extremities with the shiftable frame B and the lever a, which said bar is designed to be acted upon by the lever a to move the frame.
g is also a short bar pivoted to the shiftable frame B and also the lever f,which said lever is connected with the framework of the machine C at one extremity, and the other extremity thereof is connected with lever a by means of the short bar or link e, which has pivotal connection with said short bar f, and lever a and the bars gand e and leverfforming an intermediate equalizing mechanism between lever a and the shiftable frame B, but forms a part of the complete equalizing mechanism formed by the combination of all of the parts ,herein named, and the adjustment of these parts is such that when the free lever a is moved an equal pull or draft will be made upon the forward end of the shiftable framework B through the bars CZ and g, which will be actuated by the lever. The free end of lever ais connected with the framework C of the machine, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or may be attached to any stationary point by means of spring c, and is held under tension of said spring, so that when the machine is at rest the shiftable framework B will be drawn rearwardly to its maximum position and be held in such position under tension of the spring, and any forward movement thereof would only be by an impulse imparted to said frame sufficient to cause the spring to yield.
As before stated, the shaft A and any of the framework connected with the reel which may be mounted upon said shaft is carried at the rear portion of the shiftable frame B and has a detachable relation therewith, which may be such as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, wherein the shaft is shown journaled upon the shiftable frame and held in position by means of a strap being carried over the shaft, leaving an open space at the rear, and a pin being provided for insertion through the strap and into the shiftable frame to maintain the shaft in position and accommodating itself to ready detachment simply by removing the pin, or it may be attached upon or journaled upon the shiftable frame in any suitable manner. Thereel is adapted to be driven in any suitable manner; but we have provided the sprocket-wheel D, which is fixed upon reel-shaft A or may be fixed in connection with the reel-framework in any suitable manner.
F is a shaft journaled upon the shiftable frame B, and E is a sprocket-wheel xed thereon and is connected with sprocket-wheels D by means of a sprocket-chain.
In connection with the reel we have provided means for actuating it intermittently. This means consists,V of the clutch-wheel H, which is fixed upon shaft F.
I I2 are arms loosely journaled upon shaft F, there being provided similar arms on the opposite side of the wheel and in the same relative position.
J J2 are also arms pivoted upon pins t' 712, which said pins connect the matching or corresponding` arms or the two separate sets of arms, the forward ends of said arms J J2 being pivoted at the same point, and may be pivoted upon pin 7o, as here shown, upon the bar K, which will hereinafter be designated as the oscillating bar, as its purpose in the operation of the machine is that it shall be moved back and forth.

It will be seen that the blocks n n2 in addition to being supported in the frame parts p 192 are provided with coiled springs carried between the frame parts and the ends of the blocks yn n2 and the outer extension of the frame parts p p2, the said blocks being held in somewhat compressed condition and in such manner as to provide for a tendency in the blocks toward a forward actuation.
In carrying out the operation of our reell mechanism we have provided means for controlling the movement of the reel-cylinder or the reel of fabric thereon in such a manner that when the fabric is first rolled thereon or when the reel is first started thereon the reel will be turned long distances, and as it increases in size, thus presenting a greater circumference, its movement will be constantly less in proportion to the growth of its circumference, and the mechanism we provide for carrying out this particular function of our device consists of the oscillating bar K, (shownl in Fig. 1,) which is pivoted to the framework, as at 3, and is designed to swing back and forth and is provided with a slot therein adapted to receive the means upon the end of a propelling bar or arm adapted to fit in said slot, or said driving arm or bar or the rear end thereof that connects with the slotted portion of said oscillating bar K be- IOO IIO
ing adapted to move up and down in said slot with a view of lengthening or shortening the stroke thereof, which lengthening or shortening of the stroke will result in a corresponding lengthening or shortening of the stroke of the arms J J2, resulting likewise in a corresponding lengthening or shortening of the movement of the wheel H, that is actuated by said blocks, and a corresponding lengthening or shortening of the movement of the reel-cylinder which is actuated from said wheel H through suitable connecting parts, in this manner controlling the move,- ments of the said reel-cylin der in such a manner that the growing circumference of the fabric-roll on the cylinder will act upon the connecting mechanism between the said roll and the driving-bar to shift the said bar or the rear end thereof in the slot in the oscillating bar Kto constantly shorten the stroke of the said oscillating bar. We prefer to provide a curved slot in connection with the said oscillating bar, and the curve in the slot 4 is purposed to correspond with a circle drawn the center of which would be a point at the forward end o'f the bar that actuates the oscillating bar K.

The forward end of the bar is connected eccentrically with a disk or Wheel upon a shaft designed to be rotated through power designed to be derived from the fabric-machine with which the mechanism herein shown is purposed to be connected, so that in case of its being applied in the manner herein shown the slot 4 would form a portion of a circle drawn from the center of the shaft upon which the disk is mounted, so that as the pin 6 is shifted up and ,down in the slot it will always move in an arc of 'a circle described from the center of the shaft or approximately so, there being of course a slight variation on account of the eccentric connection of the driving-bar with the disk, but this is such a small difference that the general principle herein laid down will not be varied sufficiently to-interfere with the working of the machine.
The mechanism connecting the end of driving-bar 5 with the surface of the reel consists of the link or bar 7, pivotedly connected with the head of pin 6. The lever 8 is pivotedly connected with link 7, as at 9, which said lever is pivoted to angle-bar 10, as at 11, which said angle-bar is pivoted upon framework C of the machine, as at 16, and the depending arm thereof is connected withv the shiftable frame B or a lug thereon by means of the link 18, pivotedly connected with said angle-bar 10 and with a lug upon the shiftable frame, as at 19. The rear end of lever 8 is not connected directly with the surface of the reel-cylinder, but through intermediate parts consisting of the roller 13, which is journaled in the pivoted bars 14, which enables the roller to move up and down the bar 15, connected with said roller and the chain 12, connected with bar 15,l which is carried over sprocketwheels mounted upon the framework C and supports upon the end thereof the weight 17, which acts to draw the roller 13 up in close contact with the surface of the fabric-reel. (The circle indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicates the fabricreel.) The lever 8 is connected at its rear end with the sprocket-chain and is shown in the drawings as being inserted through one of the links thereof. Corresponding parts like those shown connecting are or may be placed upon the opposite side of the machine, but we have deemed it sufficient to show only the one side.
We claim- 1. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with the revoluble reel-cylinder and the framework of the machine, of an adjustable framework carried upon the main frame of the machine and provided to support working parts thereon, mechanism for delivering power parallel with the bearing of the frame for the purpose of moving it, and yielding parts for receiving the thrust or moving force of said frame occasioned by the power applied to actuate the same.
2. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a revoluble reel-cylinder, of the adjustable frame B supporting said reel, provided with the equalizing mechanism consisting of the lever c, one end thereof pivoted to one side of the frame, the other end thereof adjustable upon the frame, the barf, one end thereof pivoted to the frame B and connected with lever a by means of link e, theL bar d connecting lever ct with the frame, and the bar g connecting bar f with the frame, and the spring c connectedat one end with the lever a and the other end with a fixed object, all substantially as described and shown.
3. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with the revoluble reel-cylinder, of a movable frame supported and movable upon the main framework of the machine and carrying working parts thereof, of yielding parts connected therewith and with a stationary resisting body for receiving the thrust or moving force of the moving frame occasioned by the power applied to actuate the workingl parts supported thereon.
4. 'In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with the revoluble the framework of the machine, of a movable frame adapted to support the reel thereon, and provided with suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith,and with a yielding member connected with a stationary part and designed to receive the thrust or moving force of the frame occasioned by the power applied to actuate the working parts.
5. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with the revoluble reel-cylinder and a suitable bed-frame, a longitudinallymovable frame supported on said bed-frame and designed to support the working parts thereof, of a yielding member or element concylinder and IOO IIO

nected with said frame and with a stationary resisting body.
6. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a longitudinally-adj ustable frame supported on the framework of the machine, of equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and a spring connected with said equalizing mechanism and with a fixed body, of a revoluble reel-cylinder supported upon said adjustable frame, all substantially as described and shown.
7. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a longitudinally-adj ustable frame supported on the framework of the machine, of equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and a spring connected with said equalizing mechanism and with a fixed body, of a revoluble reel-cylinder supported upon said adjustable frame for receiving the fabric, and an intermittingly-actuated clutch-wheel connected with said reel and supported on the adjustable frame for delivering the power to turn the reel, and suitable clutch mechanism for actuating the clutch-wheel, all substantially as described and shown.
8. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a sliding frame held under tension, of a reel-cylinder for receiving the fabric and movable with said frame, an intermittingly actuated wheel, two frictionclutches for alternately engaging the said wheel for actuating it continuously in one direction, and means for actuating the said clutches alternately forwardly and rearwardly, all substantially as described and shown.
9. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a reel-cylinder for receiving the fabric, of a reel-cylinder supported upon a movable frame suitably carried to reciprocate on a main frame, of an oscillating bar provided with an adjustable pin in connection therewith connected with the power for actuating the oscillating bar and with the surface of the fabric on the reel and connected with the reel-cylinder through suitable intermediate parts adapted to convert a reciprocating into a rotary motion designed to be imparted to the reel-cylinder,substantially as shown and described.
10. In a reel for wire-fabric machines, the combination with a reel-cylinder supported upon a movable frame and adapted to receive and roll thereon the fabric delivered thereto, a tension device for said movable frame, of an oscillating bar and a bar for actuating the oscillating bar and adjustable thereon and suitable mechanism connected with said adjustable driving-bar and with the surface of the fabric upon the reel-cylinder and adjustably connected with the sliding frame that supports the reel and suitable intermediate parts between the oscillating bar and the reelcylinder supported in connection with the movable frame to converta reciprocating into a rotary motion, all substantially as described and shown.

In a fabric-reel, the combination with a sliding frame, he'ld under tension therein, of a reel-cylinder for receiving the fabric, an intermittently actuated wheel, two frictionclutches for alternately engaging the said wheel for actuating it continuously in one direction, and means for actuating the said clutches alternately forwardly and rearwardly, all substantially as described and shown.
l2. In a reel for fabric-making machinery of the class herein shown, a revoluble cylinder mounted upon and movable with a suitable frame and the means for turning the same, consisting of a clutch-wheel suitably connected therewith, and alternately forwardly and rearwardly actuated frictionclutches for alternately engaging and releasing said wheel.
13. In a fabric-reel, the combination, with the reel-cylinder or the shaft A thereof, of the adj ust-able bearing-frame B, upon which the reel-cylinder is supported and journaled and upon which is also mounted shaft F, with which is connected the mechanism for turning the reel-cylinder, said frame B having an adjustable bearing relation upon the framework C of the machine, and having a suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and also connected with a tension-spring, which connects with the framework C, of the machine, whereby, the jar attendant upon the driving of the intermediate parts between the power and the reel-cylinder is obviated or modified to prevent the excessive wearing of the parts, all substantially as described and shown.
14. In a fabric-reel, the combination with the framework B for supporting the reel, of the lever a, one end thereof pivoted to one side of the frame, the other end thereof adjustable upon the frame, the bar j", one end thereof pivoted to the frame B, and connected with lever a, by means of link e, the bar d connecting lever a with the frame, and the bar g connecting bar f with the frame, and the spring c connected at one end with the lever a, and the other end with a fixed obj ect, all substantially as described and shown.
15. In a fabric-reel, the combination with the adjustable or sliding frame B, for supporting working parts of the machine, having suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and suitably connected through a yielding or stretching element with a stationary resisting body, of the pivoted angle-bal' lO, connected therewith by means of a bar pivoted at one end to a suitable lug on the frame and the other end to one end of the angle-bar, the other end of the angle-bar being connected in a suitable manner with mechanism connecting the reel-cylinder and the driving power, whereby, the shifting movement of the frame attendant upon and resulting from the operation of parts actuated to turn the reelcylinder,will be transmitted to mechanism connecting the surface of the fabric on IOO IIO
the reel with adjustable parts connected with the driving power for the purpose of harmonizin g the movements of the various workin g parts of the complete reel mechanism, all su'bstantially as described and shown.
16. In a fabric-reel, the combination with a reel-cylinder for receiving the fabric, of an oscillating slotted bar provided with an adjustable pin carried in the slot and suitable mechanism connecting the pin with power, and suitable mechanism connecting the pin and surface of the fabric on the reel-cylinder adapted to shift the pin as the size of the roll on the reel increases in size, substantially as shown and described.
17. In a fabric-reel, the combination with a reel-cylinder for receiving the fabric, of an adjustable frame-support for said cylinder and an oscillating slotted bar provided with an adjustable pin carried in the slot and suitable mechanism connecting the pin with powerand suitable mechanism connecting the pin and surface of the fabric on the reelcylinder adapted to shift the pin as 4the size of the roll on the reel increases in size, sub V stantially as shown and described.
18. In a fabric-reel, the combination with a reelcylinder supported upon a movable frame, of an oscillating bar, and a bar for actuating the oscillating bar and adjustable thereon, and mechanism connected with said adjustable driving-bar and with the surface of the fabric upon the reel-cylinder and adjustably connected with the sliding frame that supports the reel, and suitable intermediate parts between the oscillating bar and the reel -cylinder supported in connection with the movable frame to converge a reciprocating into a rotary motion, all substantially as described and shown.
19. In a fabric-reel, a revoluble cylinder or frame and means for turning the same, consisting of a clutch-wheel suitably connected therewith,and alternately forwardly and rearwardly actuated friction-clutches for alternately engaging and releasing said wheel.
20. In a fabric-reel, the combination, with a revoluble cylinder or frame, of an adjustable frame supporting said reel and mechanism for turning said reel, consisting of a surface or peripherally-engaged wheel supported on said adjustable frame and suitably connected with sai-d cylinder, two clutches suitably supported in close proximity to the surface of said wheel, two reaches, their forward ends suitably connected, one with each of said clutches a'nd pivoted together at their rear extremities, an oscillating bar bearing a pivoting-pin for said reaches, and suitable driging mechanism, adjustably connected with the said oscillating bar, for causing the said bar to be so actuated, all as described and shown.
21. In a fabric-reel, the combination, with a revoluble cylinder or frame, of an adjustable frame supporting said reel the mechanism for turning the-said cylinder or frame, consisting of a peripherally or surface driven clutch-wheel,two substantially wedge-shaped, surface-impinging clutch-blocks,suitably carried on opposite sides of said wheel in close proximity to the surface thereof, two drivingarms, the forward ends thereof, suitably connected with the clutches or with the clutchsupports, and having their rearends pivoted together, an oscillating bar bearing apin upon which the said reaches are pivoted and slotted below the said pivoted pin, and suitable mechanism for actuating the said oscillating bar, having an adjustable relation or connection with the slotted portion of the said bar.
22. In a fabric-reel, the combination with the framework thereof, of a horizontally adj ustable or slidingframe for supporting working parts of the machine, having suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and suitably connected through a yielding or stretching element, with a stationary resisting body. l
23. In a fabric-reel, the combination with`a reel-cylinder, of a horizontally adjustable or sliding frame for supporting working parts of the machine, having suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and suitably connected through a yielding or stretching element, with a stationary resisting body. 24. In a fabric-reel, the combination with an adjustable sliding frame suitablyheld under tension upon the framework of the machine, of a revoluble cylinder or frame, and suitable mechanism for turning the said cylinder or frame, whereby the jar attendant upon the turning of the reel-cylinder or frame through the elements connecting it with the power, will be reduced to a minimum.
25. In a fabric-reel, the combination with a reel-cylinder, of a horizontally adjustable or sliding frame suitably supported on the main framework of the machine and supporting the reel-cylinder having suitable equalizing mechanism connected therewith, and a yielding or stretching element connecting the equalizing mechanism with 'a fixed body, all substantially as described and shown.
