IGNITING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,155, dated October 17, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL FRIEDRICH PHIL- IPP STENDEBACH, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Leipsic, Kingdom of Sex ony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Igniting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to igniting devices for gas-lights; and it consists of the details of construction hereinafter set forth,
and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In order to render the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and numerals of reference denote similar parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through an incandescent'gas-light burner, showing the'igniting device applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a plan of the burner with the igniting device.
The lower part of the incandescent burner H is'screwed onto a corresponding nipple l of the housing 1 for the regulating-piston 6 6, said housing being advantageously made in two parts screw-threaded together and provided with the lowerinternal screw-thread 1, by means of which it is screwed onto the gasarm in the well-known manner. The piston 6, which fits properly and slides in the housing 1, is guided by means of the tubular piston-rod 6, which slides in the upper and lower neck parts of the housing 1. In the lower or base plate of the said housing a port 10 is pro vided, which communicates with the interior of the vertical tube 10, extending upwardly and provided at its upper end with the igniting-pill 11, which when gas flows out of the pipe glows and ignites the same at the end of the pipe in the well-known manner. Supported at the upper end of the tube 10" is a bar 13, the upper end of which carries a crosspiece from which is suspended the expansible rod 12. This rod is advantageously springpressed upwardly by means of a light spring 12, and when heated by the igniting-flame burning at the upper end of the tube 1O it expands downwardly and operates a lever 14. The tubular piston-rod 6 is provided at about its middle part with a partition 6, by means of which it is divided into an upper and lower chamber 6 and 6, the former havingalower piston 6 6 in an upward direction.
The device operates in the following manner: When the gas is turned on, it passes through the lower neck of the housing 1, through the slot 8 into the port 10, and thence to the pipe 10. Issuing at the end of this pipe, it causes the pill 11 to glow and light the igniting-flame at the top of the said pipe. The heat of the igniting-flame causes the rod 12 to expand and depress the short end of the lever 14, the long end of which starts the This upward movement causes the slot 8 to c0mmunicate with the housing 1 and gas enters the latter belowthe piston, raising the same still higher until the opening 9 also communicates with the interior of the housing. Gas now flows through the opening 9 to the burner I-I, which will be ignited by the igniting-flame at the top of the tube 10. This ignition takes place before the piston has reached its uppermost, position, and the moment this is the case the gas-opening 8 to the port 10 is closed by the rising of the piston and the igniting-flame turned off. Vents 17 are provided at the top of the cylinder to allow air to pass to the upper side of the piston and enable easy working of the latter. It will be seen that the air has free passage to the vents since the housing above the said vents does not entirely close onto the pipe 6.
One of the main advantages of the present device is that the piston and tubular pistonrod are mounted on the central vertical axis of the burner.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a cylindrical chain her mounted on the ertical central axis of a burner, a piston movable therein and having a head and a tubular rod, and means for guiding said rod, a port at the bottom of the said chamber leading to the igniting device, a slot in said piston-rod to establish communication from the interior of the rod to the port and an opposite slot to establish communication from the interior of the gaschamber to that of the rod when the latter has been raised, an expansive rod mounted in proximity to the igniting-pill, a lever mechanism in operative relation to said rod and to the movable piston-rod,whereby when the rod expands under the influence of the igniting-flame the piston-rod will be raised and gas will be admitted below the piston to further elevate the same, allowing a flow of gas to the main burner, and then cutting off the flow to the igniting-burner after the ignition of the main burner, substantially as described.
2. In a burner H the combination of 'a cylindrical chamber 1 mounted on the central axis of the said burner, a piston 6 having a head and a tubular rod 6 and means for guiding the same in the said chamber, means for supplying gas to the said hollow rod, a port 10 to the igniting-tube 10, an expansible rod mounted in proximity to said igniting-tube, a lever 14: mounted near the lower end of said tube and being in engagement withthe expansion-rod and the piston-rod, openings 8 and 9 in said hollow rod to establish communication between the interior of the rod and the port, and also when the rod is raised, to allow gas to pass from the chamber to the interior of the rod and so to the main burner, the opening 8 being of such length that the gas-supply to the igniting-tube will be cut off when the piston is raised to its fullest extent.
