To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JOHN ODEN MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond,in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and'useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, ,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam-boiler furproved construction of the same by which atmospheric air can beadmitted to the fire-box above the fuel-bed for insuring complete burning'of the products of combustion-and by which also a forced draft of said air may be employed when desired. 7
It is alsoan object to improve the construction generally whereby I secure important advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The'invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a steamboiler furnace constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the f urnace-door,showing the hinged dampers open. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the front of the housing being removed.
In the said drawings,the reference-numeral 1 designates the walls of the" furnace; 2, the bridge-wall; 3, the grate; 4, the fuel-opening, and 5 a steam-boiler. The said bridge-wall is formed'with openings 6 for the passage of the products of combustion, and located in the combustion chamber 7 in rear of the bridge-wall, in which the unconsumed prodnets of combustion from the fire-box are ignited and burned, are upper and lower arches which retard the passage of said products, so that they shall be completely consumed.
The numeral 9 designates the ash-pit, and 10 the door thereof.
The numeral 11 designates the furnacedoor, which is hollow and comprises the inner perforated side 12, which is adapted to cover and close the fuel-opening, the top and bottom walls, and the front formed with an opening 13. -This door is hinged to the front of the furnace and is provided with means for fastening it when closed, as usual. openings in all four" sides. These openings are closed by fiat dampers 15, hinged at one end to the housing. P'ivoted to each of these dampers isa rod 16. The inner ends of these rods'are pivotally connectedfwith the inner end of a horizontally-movable pin 17, which passes through a central boss 18 formed integr'al with the front 19 of the housing. This pin is formed with aseries of notches 20,whioh are adapted to engage witha lug 21 to hold thepinand-dam persin any position to which they may be adjusted. By moving this pin inwardly the hinged dampers, through the medium of the connecting-rods, are opened more or less, as the case may be, and by pulling said pin outward the said darnpersare closed. f
The numeral 24 designates a horizontal shaft extending across the opening in the front of the f u rnace-door andis provided with a fan or wind-wheel 25. Formed in the front of the said housing is an air-opening 26,which is opened and closedby a rectangular damper 27, pivotally connected with said front and provided with a handle 28, by which it may be operated.
The operation is as follows: A fire is built upon the grate, as usnal,and by opening the hinged dampers of the housing atmospheric air will enter the latter and will escape through the perforations in the inner wall of the fur nac e-door to the fire-box and will mix with the products of combustion, which latter will be entirely consumed in the combustion-cham= her. When an increased or forced draft of air is desired to the fire-box above the fuel, the
damper in the front of the housing is opened,
when the air rushing in through the same will strike the fan or'wind-wheel and will rotate the same and force the air into the combustion chamber. By reason of the arches in the combustion-chamber the prodnets of combustion from the fire-box will be retarded, so that entire combustion thereof will be insured.
From the above it will be seen that the air is admitted to the fire-box above the fuel-bed, so that it will combine with the unconsumed products of combustion, which will be en tirely consumed in the combustion-chamber, thus making a complete smoke-burner. By
'means ofthe hinged dampersthe amount of air admitted to the firebox above the fuel bed can be regulated as circumstances. may require, and through the medium of the windwheel and pivoted damper a forced draft can be given to the air when an intense heat is desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a steam-boiler furnace, of the hollow hinged door, the perforated inner wall, the front formed with an opening, the rotatable wind-wheel, the housing secured to said front provided with a damper and an air-opening, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a steam-boiler, of the hinged door, the inner wall of which is perforated, and the front formed withan opening, the housing secured to said front provided with hinged dampers at the top, bottom and sides and means for operating the same, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a steam-boiler furnace, of the hinged door having a perforated inner wall and the front formed with an opening, the housing secured to said door, the dampers hinged to the top, bottom and sides thereof, the rods pivotally connected with said dampers, andthe horizontally-movable pin to which said rods are pivotally connected, substantially as described.
4:. The combination with a steam -boiler furnace, of the hinged door having a perforated inner wall, andthe front having an opening therein, the rotatable wind-wheel, the housing, the pivoted damper in the front thereof, the hinged dampers at the top, bottom and sides, the rods pivotally connected therewith, and the horizontally-movable pin with which said rods are pivotally connected, substantially as described.
5. In a steam-boilerfurnace, the door having an inner perforated wall and a radialbladed valve, or wind-wheel, arranged in an opening in the front wall of said door, and means adapted to direct the air upon the blades of said valve to conduct a blast into the. combustion chamber, substantially as specified.

In a steam-boiler furnace, the hollow door, with its interior in communication with the combustion-chamberand havinga blasted valve or Wind-wheel arranged in an opening in its front, and a valved chamber arranged upon said front and in communication with the interior of said door, substantially as set forth.
