Application filed September 2,1899. Serial No. 729,284:- (No model.) 7
To all whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS HILL, a citizen of the United States, andaresident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and Stateyof NewJersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
' The invention relates to improvements in wagons, and more particularly to wagons of '10 the character employed for collecting the refuse of cities.
My invention consists in a deep-bodied wagon having double vertically-hinged doors at its rear end and provided with detachable means for engagingthe vertical meeting edges of the doors and holding the doors firmly closed.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the rear end of the wagon,
whereby it is given great strength, with con veniences for the removal of the load; and a further object of my invention is to provide adequate, simple, and durable means for preventing the pressure of the load from bulging the rear doors outward or throwing them open.
The invention will be fully understood from I the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying o drawings, in which ,7 Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through a wagon constructed in accordance with and embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the body of same. 5 Fig. 3 is an elevation, looking at the inner side thereof, of the detachable locking-bar which in use engages the vertical meeting edges of the double doors and maintains said doors in their closed position. Fig. 4 is an edge View of same. Fig. 5 is adetached elevation of a portion of the inner side of the rear endof the wagon; and Fig. 6 is a top view of'a removable transverse bar which spans the upper rear portion of the wagon- 5 body and receives a hook provided atthe'upper endofthe detachable locking-bar.
In the drawings, the numeral '10 denotes the wagon-body, 11 one of the wheels therefor, and .12 a portion of one of the shafts.
' The body 10 is of commodious character,
and at its rear end said body is formed with the permanent vertical sections 13 13, whose outer edges conform to the inclined sides of cal and receive the corresponding or dbuble doors 14 14, the latter being secured to the sections 13 13 by means of the hinges 15. The vertical sections 13 and doors 14 extend the full length of the rear end of the body 10. Said doors when closed meet at the vertical center line of said end of said body.
Directly below the doors 1i is rigidly secured a transverse beam 16, which strengthens the rear end of the body lOandforms a sill for the doors 14. At its cent-er the beam 16 is provided with the vertical socket 17 to receive the reduced lower end of the plate 18,
locking-bar 19, said socket 17 being substantially in line with the outer vertical face of the doors 14, and said plate 18 being preferably set into the bar 19 so as to he flush with the inner face thereof and permit said face doors 14:.
The bar 19 is preferably made of wood and has the plate l8'b0lted on the inner face of its lower end and the plate 20 bolted upon the inner face .of its upper end, said plate 20 beingalso set into the bar 19 so as to be flush with the face thereof. The plate 20 is bent to extend inward over the top of the doors 14 and then downward, as at 21, to enter a socket formed in the transverse bar 22, which extends from the-upper edge of one section 13 to the upper edge of the other section 13 and is removable. The doors 14 close against plied in position to hold the doors closed. The bar 19 is furnished with a handle 23 for convenience in removing and applying said bar.
The bar 22 is preferably formed of the wooden beam 24 and metal plate 25, the latterjfacing the outer vertical side of said beam and at its ends being formed with the arms 26, which project downward and are adapted to enter the keepers 27, provided to receive them, said keepers 27 beingsecured tothe inner faces of the aforesaid sections 13, and serving, in connection with the arms 26, as convenient means for detachably holding the bar 22 in position. Thebar 22 not only serves as a means against which the doors 14" may the body 10 and whose inner edges are vcrtisecured upon the lower end of the detachable 7 to remain flush with the outer face of said the bar 22, and thereupon the bar 19 is apclose, but also as a'transverse stay-beam which strengthens the rear portion of the wagonbody, and sineesaid bar 22 is removable it does not interfere with the removal of the load from the wagon.
r In the employment of the wagon shown the doors 14 usually remain closed except when the load is to be'removed, and hence in the. normal condition of the wagon while in use collecting refuse the bar 22 will be in position and the doors 14 closed and held closed by means of the bar 19, whose lower plate 18 will enter the socket 17 of the lower bar 16 and whose upper plate 20 will. be hooked into the socket 28 of the upper bar 22, When it is desired to remove the load from the wagon,
for holding the doors 14 closed and also strengthen the rear end of the wagon, the bars 16 and 22 affording strength as well as fur- 'nishing the sockets 17 and 28 forthe bar 19.
' What I claim as my invention, anddesire' to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wagon, the body 10 having the vertical hinged doors 14, and transverse bars 16.
and 22, combined with the vertical detachable locking-bar 19 engaging said bars 16 and 22 and extending along the meeting portions 7 of said doors; substantially as set forth.
2. In a wagon, the body 10 having at its rear end the sections 18, the vertical doors 14 hinged thereto, the lower bar 16 extending outward beyond the said doors, and the upper bar 22 at the inner side of said doors, combined with the vertical detachable locking-bar19 engaging said bars 16 and 22 and extending along the meeting portions of said doors; substantially as set forth.
rear end the vertical hinged doors 14, and the bars 16 and 22 respectively provided with sockets 17 and 28, combined with the vertical detachable locking bar 19 engaging said sockets and extending along the meeting portions of said doors; substantially as set forth.
4. In a wagon, the body 10 having at its rear end the vertical hinged doors 14, the lower bar 16 having a socket 17, and'the upper bar 22 detachably held in place, combined with the vertical detachable lockin bar 19 engaging said bars 16 and 22 and eX- tending along the meeting portions of said doors; substantially as set forth.
5.'In a wagon the body 10 having at its rear end the sections 13, the vertical doors 14 hinged thereto, the lower bar 16, and the upper bar 22, the latter having the arms 26 to engage the keepers 27 secured to said sections 13, and said bars 16 and 22 respectively having sockets 1'7 and 28, combined with the Vertions ofsaid doors; substantially as set forth.
'6. In a wagon the body 10 having at its rear end the vertical hinged doors 14, the lower or sill bar 16, and the upper inner bar locking-bar 19 havingthe plate at its lower 7 end to enter a socket in said bar 16 and provided at its upper end with the hook-shaped plate to reach over said doors and engage said bar 22; substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 31st day of August, A. D. 1899.
