UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JAMES NEWMAN, OF PLAINVIEW, OREGON.
LAN D-RO LLER.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters .'Patent No. 634,737, dated October 10, 1899.
Application and August a, 1899. Serial No. 726,581. on model.)
To all whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainview, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in land-rollers; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable form of implement of this class that will adjust itself to the inequalities of the ground and permit the turning of corners and the return angles at the ends of the rows with facility.
To this end the convention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. N
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved land-roller. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the roller in turning a curve or corner. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the roller.
1 denotes the tongue fixed to the transverse beam 2, which in turn is connected to the parallel beam 3 by the end bars a 4, in whichthe forward roller 5 is mounted- 6 denotes the'seat, and 7 7 the diagonal braces, which extend from the tongue to the outer ends of the beam 2, the rear ends of said braces'being formed with eyes 7 to receive the forward ends of the diverging draftrods 8 8, which extend through the ends of the beam 2 and eyes 7 and are provided with the nuts 9 9 to clamp the eyes 7 againstsaid beam. The rear ends of the draft-rods 8 8 are fixed to the beam 3 by the clips 9 9, and
13 13 are mounted. These latter rollers carry boxes 1 1 14, which may be loaded with stones or scrap metal to give additional weight.
It will be noted that the rear rollers are pivoted to the draft-bars and turn independently and without interference with each other or with the front roller, as shown in Fig. 3, thus enabling the operator to turn very sharp corners and manipulate the implement in confined spaces.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me 3 but many changes inthe details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a land-roller, the combination with the main-roller frame, of the draft-rods fixed to said frame and terminating in the hookshaped ends and the rear rollers pivoted to said draft-rods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Aland-roller comprising the tongue 1 and beams 2 and 3,'the diagonal braces 7 7 formed with the eyes 7', the draft-rods 8 8 formed with the hooks 1O 10, the yoke-straps 12 12 formed with the eyes 11 11 and the roll- Witnesses:
