QWATONNA MANUFACTURING COM- GATE-VALVE FOR CHURNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 634,730, dated October 10, 1899.
Applieation filed August 23, 1899. Serial No, 728,248, (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: 1
, Be it known that we, THoMAs J. HOWE, DAVID J. AMES, and HENRY N. LABARE, of. Owatonna, county of Steele, State of Minne= 5 sota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Valves for Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gate-valves designed especially for use in churns, though applicable generallyio casks, barrels",hogsheads, tanks,or other receptacles; and the objects we .have in view are to provide a valve in which the valve-disk is adapted 'to automatically conform itself to the valve-seat, so as to afford a tight joint when the valve is closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate-valve with a straight unobstructed passage and having no recesses or orifices therein extending 0% from the main passage and liable to become filled or clogged with the material that is drawn from the receptacle upon which the valve is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve of this kind with a self-adjusting disk, wherebya close fit of the valve-disk upon the seat is secured.
, Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a partial section of 'a churn or other receptacle having our improved valve applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on line m w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation, looking at the inner end of the valve. Fig. 4c is an outside end elevation of the valve.
In the drawings, '2 represents the valvecasing, which is preferablya cylindrical cast- 0 ing having a flange 3 formed integrally with its outer end and flush therewith and having an inclined inner end 5, forming a valve-seat. A projection .7 is formed, preferably, integrally with the valve-casing 5 and has a straight 5 hole through it to receive the valve-operating stem 9. The Valve is in the form of a disk 11, having, preferably, a leather or other suitable covering 13 secured thereto by the central rivet 15, which secures the valve-disk I ll-to the crank-arm 17 of the valve-stem 9.
The disk 11 preferably has an upturned lip 19 at one side, and the leather covering 13 is turned up and secured to this lip by means of a rivet 21. This prevents i the leather from being rolled up as the valve is swung onto its seat. The rivet lfifits loosely in the crank-arm 17, so that the valve is self-adjusting, and thereby adapts itself to the valve seat. The top of the disk 11 is preferably provided with thelugs 23, which project upon either sideof the crank-arm 17, so as to prevent the disk 11 from turning on .or with the rivet 15. This causes the lip 19 to move ahead in shutting the valve. The valve-stem 9 preferably passes through a suitable stuff- 6 ing-box 25 in the projection 7, or a suitable packing might be used outside of said projection and around the valve-stem, as preferred. A handle 27 is secured upon the valve-stem by means of a suitable nut 29. 7o Projections 31 are preferably provided upon the face of the, flange 3 to limit the movement of the handle 27.
The operation of the device is as follows: The valve-casing is inserted in a suitable opening extending through the wall of the churn, cask, tank, or other receptacle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Whenthe valve is used with the lip 19, the disk and valve stem mnst be removed before inserting the casing in the opening prepared for it, and the disk and stem are then put in place from the inside of the receptacle. Where access cannot be had from the inside of the receptacle, the lip 19 is omitted, and the entire device may then be put into place from the outside of the receptacle. The disk adj usts itself to the surface of the valve-seat,
and it is forced onto said seat by means'of the crank-arm 1'7, the stem 9, and the han- 9o dle or lever 27. By tighteningthe nut 29 the pressure may be increased any desired amount on the valve-disk.
It will be seen that this gate-valve is exceedingly simple in construction. It is capable of beinginserted and adjusted from the outside of the churn or other receptacle. It has a straight smooth unobstructed orifice [or the How of liquid from the churn 01' other receptacle, and the valve is capable of being very quickly operated, either for opening or closing. It will also be seen that this gate valve is so constructed that in case of its use in a churn none of the cream can remain unohurned in the tube of the gate while churning to be lost in the buttermilk.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the cylindrical easing 2 having an inclined seat upon its inner end, of the swinging valve-stem 9 provided with the crank 17 and the disk valve connected to said crank-arm and adapted to be seated upon the inclined inner end of the casing 5, for the purpose set forth.
2. The eombination, with the casing 2 havinga smooth-s11 rfaced orifice extending therethrongh and provided with the inclined valveseat 5 at its inner end, of the rotatable valvestem 9 provided at its outer end with a suitable handle and at its inner end with the crank-arm 17-, and a suitable valve disk loosely connected to said crank-arm, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the casing 2 having the flange 3 and projection 7 formed integrally therewith and provided with an inclined valve-seat at its inner end, of the retatable valve-stem 9 inonntedin said projection 7 and provided at its outer end with a suitable handle and at its inner end with a crank-arm, of the valve-disk provided with the upturned lip 19, asuitable facing secured to said disk and means for loosely connecting said disk to said erankarm, substantially as described. I 4. The combination, with the casing 2 having an, inclined inner end forming a valveseat, of the valve-stem 9 having a crank-arm at its inner end, avalve secured to said crankarm and means for adj nsting said valve-stem longitudinally and thereby adjusting said valve, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 16th day of August, 1899. THOMAS J. HOWE. DAVID J. AMES. HENRY N. LABARE. In presence of MINNIE E. AMES, 7 FRANK LA BAREL
