UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE,
' PETER T. NEUMANN, OF GALION, OHIO.
CONVERTIBLE HAY-RACK AND WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,581, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed \Tune 8, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER 'l. NEUMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Hay-Racks and \Vagon-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable .others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wagon-boxes, and especially to a combination box and hay-rack so constructed that it may be easily and quickly adjusted for use for either purpose and by the removal of the sides converted into a suitable platform for carrying stone, &c.
More specifically the present invention consists of the hinged sides, which are adapted to be swung out to form a rack and when converted into a box being turned up into vertical positions, in which positions they are securely held by means of hooks carried by the end sections.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically 1 defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved combination hay-rack and wagonand of said cross-pieces are secured the braces Serial No. 719,845. (No model.
outwardly-extended portions, forming right angles, as at B. These brace-strips have formed at their lower and inner ends eyesf, whereby they may be hinged by means of the pins G to the eyes O,in which the pins G are mounted. When the wings are swung down to their lowest limit to adapt the top for use as a hay-rack, said brace-strips enter the spaces between the angled braces O, and the bottom portion of the brace-strips F will bear against the outer faces of the side-boards D, thus throwing the strain of the weight against said boards, while the edges of said bracestrips F will be held between the braces C and securely against any longitudinal movement of the bottom or wings.
At the front end of the rack is carried the upright fixed end piece H, carrying the hooks J and the folding section K, which latter is of an inverted-V shape and carrying two arms K, the lower ends of which are perforated and backwardly bent and adapted to be pivoted to the upper ends of the arms J, which are carried by the upright posts 1-1. This section K is adapted to be turned to an upright position when the device is adjusted for 'use as a hay-rack and to be folded down upon the inner face of the piece H when adjusted as a wagon-box, in which adjusted positions the swinging wings are in vertically-disposed relations and parallel to each other.
lVhen the device is adjusted as a wagonbox, the tail or rear end piece M is utilized. This piece has near its lower end the two hooks N N, which are caused to engage with the eyes 0 O, secured to the bottom of the box, while near the upper end of said tail or rear end piece are pivoted two hooks P, the right-angled ends of which are designed to wings, as illustrated in the drawings, thus securely holding said wings in vertical positions,
tened t0 the brace-strips B, which have they engage over the upper edges of the swinging forming the longitudinal sides to the box. The forward ends of the swinging Wings are held to the front piece by means of the hooks J. If it is desired to adapt the bottom of the box for use in carrying stone, the swinging sides and end piece may be removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A convertible hay-rack, comprising in combination with the body portion of the wagon-box having the angled braces arranged in pairs on the ends of the cross-pieces B, the brackets having strips secured thereto, and pivoted on pins carried in eyes formed at the upper ends of said braces, and adapted to swing between the latter, the inner and lower edge of each of said brackets designed to bear respectively against the outer face of the wagon-box and the upper faces of said crosspieces, as set forth.
2. In combination with the bottom portion of the wagon-box, the eyes 0 mounted thereon, the hinged side-boards, the tailpiece having hooke'd bars N secured to the outer faces thereof and designed to engage with said eyes, the hooks P carried near the upper ends of the tailpieces, and engaging eyes on the hinged wings, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER T. NEUMANN.
