IINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADELMOND C. FAIRFIELD, OF NORMAL, ILLINOIS.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 632,557, dated September 5, 1899.
Application led-J'anuary 7, 1899. Serial No. 701,441. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it 'ln/ay concern:
Be it known that I, ADELMOND C. FAIR- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Normal, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.`
My invention relates to nut-locks for preventing the loosening or backward movement thereof upon their bolts, and which may also serve as a bond when used on electric railways for conveying the electric current from one rail to the next adjoining one.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of nut-lock which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efliciency in use. 1
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing two railroad-rails provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates two ordinary railroad-rails, 2 the ish-plates, and 3 the bolts provided with nutsl and washers 5. In the present instance two bolts are shown, but more may be employed if found convenient or necessary. Each of these bolts is provided with a lock member 6, consisting of a single piece of wire bent at or near the center, forming' lugs 7. Said wire is then bent at right angles, forming two arms 8 at right angles to said lugs, and then inclined inwardly and twisted together and formed with bends 9 for the passage of the bolt. The ends of the wire are then bent outwardlyin opposite directions, forming two arms 10, which are adapted to rest against the fish-plate or other objects the bolts are used in connection with to prevent tilting of the member.
The numeral 12 designates the other member of the lock, also consisting of a single piece of wire bent near the center, forming two horizontal parallel arms 13, the central bend being adapted to engage with the lug of one of the other members. Said arms 13 extend to the lug of the other member and are then crossed diagonally, engaging behind said lastmentioned lug. They are then again extended longitudinally, forming two parallel arms 1l, the extremity of one of which is formed with a h'ook l5, while the other arm is bent inwardly at a right angle and its end engaged with the said hook. In use the nuts will be engaged with the arms 13 and 14 and backward movement or turning of the nuts will be prevented.
Theinvention may be employed for locking;
nuts generally which are subjected to vibra= tion or strain which would have a tendency to loosen the same, and when employed in con.- nection with electric railways they may also serve as a bon d for electrically connecting the rails.
The numeral 16 designates a plate at the opposite end of the bolt, provided with outwardly-extending Iianges 17, which engage with the heads of the bolts and prevent them from turning.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a nut-lock, the combination with the bolts and the nuts, of the lock members cona sisting of a single piece of wire bent at the center to form a lug, then bent inwardly at right angles, then inclined toward each other and twisted together and formed with bends and the ends bent outwardly in opposite directions and the member alsoconsisting of a single piece of wire bent near the center forming two parallel arms engaging with one of the nuts, then crossed diagonally and then extended forwardly forming two horizontal arms engaging with the other nut and one of said arms bent into a hook andthe other arm bent at a right angle and engaged with said hook, the respective loops of such latter member engaging with the lugs of the first said members substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADELMOND C. FAIRFIELD.
