WITNESSES I I @MZZL m ifln fmz l 5% 6 E NlTED STATES PATENT Urricn.
WILLIAM G. GARDINER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
BUNG-HOLE AND BUSHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,457, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed April 26, 1899.
T0 ctZZ w/tolrt it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM G. GARDINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bung- Holes and Bushings, of which the following is a specification.
In such casks or barrels as require a bunghole havinga metal bushing-as, for instance, barrels and kegs for ale and beerit has been necessary with the bushings heretofore in use to either apply the bushing before the head is put in or to remove the head for that purpose.
My invention relates to and its object is to provide means for overcoming this difliculty and to construct a bung-hole and a bushing therefor which will admit of the application of the bushing to a cask or like receptacle having its heads in place.
A furthur object of my invention is to furnish a construction which will prevent the leak of fluids around the margin of the bushmg.
I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown and ,illustrated in the accompanying drawings, made part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of my device on. line :0 at, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same, with part of the outer flange broken away; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the inner member of my bushing, illustrating its passage through the bung-hole and Fig. 4:, a top plan view of the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate likeparts throughout the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 is a stave of a cask or barrel, through which is a circular opening or bung-hole 2.
3 is a bushing-ring exteriorly threaded, having at one of its edges a broad radial flange 4c. 5 is another bushing-ring interiorly threaded to take the thread of ring 3 and having at one of its edges a broad radial flange U. The plane of this latter flange is somewhat curved to conform to the interior bulge of the cask, as shown in Fig. 4:. The diameter of the ring 5 is such that were it not for its flange 6 it would barely pass through the lnlng-hole 2 edgewise. As provision must $erial No. 714,484. No model.)
also be made for the passage of the flange, two notches or recesses 7 7 are formed in the margin of the bung-hole through the stave and of such width and depth and so located as to permit the passage of the flange 6 edgewise when the bushing-ring 5 is passed edgewise through the bung-hole into the cask from the outside.
Projecting outwardly from the ring 5 are lugs 8 S, which when the ring 5 is in place coincide with and rest in notches 7 7. At the meeting-points of the lugs 8 and the flange 6 the flange is enlarged by ear-like projections 9 9 lying in the plane of the flange.
The flange 4, which is wide enough to overlap the notches or recesses 7, on its side next the cask is circumferentially corrugated with sharp-angled channels, as indicated at 10 in Fig. 1. The flange 6, together with its ears 9 at their outer margin and on the side next to the cask, is provided with a sharp rib 11.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the cask is closed and it is desired to provide for it a bung-hole having a metal bushing, and this without removing either of the heads, a bung-hole is bored or reamed out in the usual manner and of the proper size and the notches or recesses 77 are out, as shown. The ring 5 is now passed through the bung-hole edgevvise, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, with the flange 6 projecting edgewise into the notches or recesses 7. The ring 5 is next turned and slipped flatwise into the bung-hole, with lugs 8 in the notches 7 and the flange 6 resting against the inner side of the cask. The threaded portion of the ring 3 is now screwed into the threaded portion of ring 5. The placing of ring 5 and engaging it with ring 3 may be effected by the use merely of the hands of the operator; but an expansion-wrench or other suitable tool will now be requisite to complete the operation. As the outer ring 3 is screwed into the inner ring 5 the latter ring is prevented from turning by means of the lugs 8 engaging the recesses 7. The two parts are drawn powerfully toward each other, causing the flanges at and 6 to tightly clamp between them the margin of the bung-hole. It Will be seen that the sharp projections of the circumferential corrugations 1O 11 become embedded in the wood, and hence no liquid can escape through the joints thus formed. It will also be observed that as the sharp rib 11 is continuous and includes the margin of each of the ears 9 the escape of liquid into and through the notches 7 is prevented.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a bung-hole bushing, a threaded ring, a radial flange thereon curved in conformity with the bulge of a cask or barrel, laterallyprojecting lugs on said ring and a bung-hole margin having recesses therein adapted to permit the passage of said flange and to engage said lugs.
2. In a bung-hole bushing, a ring, a radial flange thereon, laterally-projecting lugs on said ring and extensions on said flange in-the plane thereof, and coinciding with said lugs combined with a bung-hole margin having recesses adapted to permit the passage of said flange and to engage said lugs.
3. In a bung-hole and bushing, the margin of the hole, lateral recesses therein, a pair of rings adapted to be secured in the bung-hole and one of which is adapted to pass edgewise through said recesses, and a radial flange on each of said rings adapted to cover said recesses and to clamp between them the said margin.
4. In a bung-hole and bushing, a circular margin for the bung-hole, lateral recesses therein, a ring, a radial flange thereon adapted to pass edgewise through said recesses, another ring, a flange thereon, and means for clamping said margin between the flanges of said two rings.
5. A bung-hole and bushing, comprising a circular margin for the hole, lateral recesses in said margin, a ring adapted to pass edge- Wise through said hole, a radial flange on said ring adapted to pass edgewise through said recesses, lugs on said ring adapted to engage said recesses, another ring, a flange thereon, an interior screw-threadand an exteriorscrew thread for said pair of rings whereby said rings maybe engaged with each other and whereby the margin of the bung-hole maybe clamped between said flanges.
