Vand combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.d
'.ALBRT A. SNEBOLD, OF NATRONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLUMB-BOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 632,286, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed March 27, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. SNE'BOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Natrona,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb- Bobs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.-
My inventionl relates to an improved plumbbob; and it consists in a device whereby the cord used for suspending the said plumb-bob may be reeled and kept within the same, together with certain details of construction In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved plumb-bob. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly shown in section the better to show the internal parts, consisting of the reel for winding the cord suspending the plumb-bob. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of my improved plumb-bob having the upper portion removedA therefrom.
To put my invention into practice with an ordinary plumb-bob constructed and formed in amanner well known in the art` and consisting of a steel tapering or conical point 1 and a corresponding body'portion, this body is divided into an upper section 5 and lower section 2, the one joined to the other by means of a screw-thead 3, formed upon an upwardly-projecting annular collar or sleeve 4, integral with the body portion 2, the construction and form of which leaves a circular space 6, in which a reel 7 is placed, the journals 7 of which are journaled in the aforesaid sleeve 4. Intermediate of the said upper section 5 and lower section 2 of the plumb-bob is a collar S, having a serrated periphery, by means of which the said collar may be easily revolved by the operator.
Serial No. 710,606. (No model.)
Forminga part of the above-described collar and arranged about its upper periphery is a ratchet or gear 9, which engages with a small gear or bevel pinion l0, mounted upon one end of the shaft carrying the reel 7. Attached to this reel 7 is a cord 11, the other extremity of which projects through a tensioncap at the top of the plumb-bob, and the said cord l1 and an attached ring' 12 used ina manner well known in the practical use of the plumb-bob. This tension device consists of a threaded cap 13, bearing upon a divided gland 14 in a manner that when the said cap 13 is screwed downward the gland will bind itself about the cord 11 and prevent the same from moving, or if the said gland is released the cord will have a free passage through the ports.
ln operation the cord 11 may be withdrawn to its full extent, but may be stopped at any point by screwing downthe cap 13 (therebytightening the glands 14) and stopping the cord at any point desired. The cord may be rewound about the reel 7 by simply turning the serrated collar 8 in the proper direction, which movement will operate the pinion 10 and reel 7 to wind or reel the cord 1l.
Having thus described my invention, I claim.
A plumb-bob consisting of the upper and lower section, the one separated from the other by a serrated collar 8, a reel 7 arranged intermediate of the two sections operated by the said collar and a locking device, substantially as described for coniining the plumbcord at any desired position as described.
In testimony whereof I havev hereunto aflixed my signature in th'e presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT A. SNEBOLD.
