JAMES B. SCRANTON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
VERTICAL BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,283, dated September 5, 1899. Application filed February 12, 1897. Serial No. 623,172. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SORANTON, of the city and county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vertical Boilers, fully set forth and described in the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which-- Figure 1 represents a boiler embodying my invention in side elevation, 'partly broken away to disclose the interior; Fig. 2,a horizontal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the crown-sheet and end of tubes in vertical section, and Fig. 4 a detail view of one of the nipples and caps.
In all the figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to vertical boilers; and it consists in a peculiar arrangement of the vertical tubes, in connection with ports or openings on a level with the crown-sheet, to permit the ready cleansing of the boiler at the lower part of the tubes, where from the impurity of the. water extraneous material is apt to collect and accelerate the burning out of the tubes.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, wherein- A represents the cylindrical shell of a vertical boiler; B, the fire-box or furnace; C, the ash-pit, and D the cap. The fire-box B and ash-pit C are provided with the usual doors I) and 0, respectively. Around the fire-box is a jacket E, formed by the shell A and an inner shell 6 and connected with the interior of the boiler. The inner shell 6 is united at its upper edge to the crown-sheet F, which 6X- tends horizontally over the fire-box B. Extending between the crown-sheet F and the head-piece (shown at G) are a series of vertical tubes H, arranged, as shown in crosssection in Fig. 2, at the meeting-points of two sets of parallel lines which cross each other at right angles. The ends of the tubes H (which are open) extend through the crownsheet F and head-piece G, so that the products of combustion pass from the fire-box B through them to the cap D and thence to the flue. (Not shown.)
On a level with the crown-sheet F are arranged in the shell A a row of ports or circular openings K-and K, over which are fitted nipples L, riveted to the shell A. The outer ends of the nipples L are screw-threaded to receive caps M, and packing-rings N fit between the inner faces of the caps M and outer edges of the nipples L to make a steam-tight joint.
The ports K and K are arranged at the ends of lines which pass midway between the rows of vertical tubes, the ports on opposite sides of the boiler alternating with each other, the ports K being on lines which divide the spaces or clearances f between the rows of tubes and the ports K on lines which divide the clearances f.
By means of the arrangement of the ports and vertical tubes extraneous deposit may be easily and completely removed from the lower ends of the tube by emptying the boiler, removing the caps M on the nipples L, and inserting the proper instruments.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a boiler, the combination with a crownsheet; of vertical fire-tubes extending through said crown-sheet and arranged therein at the meeting-points of two sets of parallel horizontal lines crossing each other at right angles; a series of circular ports in the outside of the boiler on a level with said crown-sheet and a port being in line with each of the clearances between the line of tubes, the ports on opposite sides of the boiler being in line with alternate clearances, and removable caps adapted to fit over and have a screw connection with each of said ports, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at New Haven, in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, this 8th day of February, 1897.
GEORGE M. ROBINSON, F. PHILIP FARNSWORTH.
