RAIL FASTENING AND JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,282, dated September 5, 1899. Application filed October 7, 1898- fi ri l N 2| l- (N0 m To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SCHMIDT, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Zwickau, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fastenings and Joint Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rail-fastening and joint connection for suspended joints wherein a weakening of the rail and tie is completely avoided.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section; Fig. 2, a horizontal section; Fig. 3, a section on line a: .90, and Fig. i a section on line 3 yin Fig. 1.
The fastening of the rails is effected by means of two clamp-plates a, screwed on by means of screw-bolts b. Underneath the foot of the rail there is arranged a bridge 0, grasping with ribs d, which assure at the same time the position of the clamp-plates over the edge of the rail-foot. The screw-bolts b, screwing down the clamp-plates, are passed through between two ties e, lying closely one near the other, so that any perforation of the ties is avoided. Below the screw-bolts bear against base-plates f, covering the under side of the tie and engaging therein with a rib 9. These ribs have for their purpose to prevent any displacement of the screw-bolts. The bridge passes also below the jointand extends up to the next fastening-place. For strengthening the bridge it is provided on its under side At the joint of the rails there with a rib h.
l are also provided clamp-plates h, having the form of angular fishes and fastened by screws 2' to the web of the rail and by screws k to the bridge. The upper edges of the upright parts of the angular fishes bear, as usually, against the head of the rail. By the arrangement of the bridge common to the two fastening-places of the rail and to the joint a very strong and sure connection is attained.
What I claim is- 1. A rail-fastening composed of ties arranged in pairs, a bridge supported thereon, a pair of clamp-plates supported by the bridge and adapted to engage the rail-foot, a baseplate beneath the ties, and bolts which connect the clamp-plates to the base-plate and extend between the members of each pair of ties, substantially as specified.
2. A rail-fastening composed of a bridge extending beneath the rails across and beyond the rail-joint, a pair of angular fishplates and apair of clamp-plates supported thereon over and beyond such joint respectively, means for fastening the fish-plates to the bridge and the rail-web, a base-plate beneath the ties, and bolts that connect the clamp-plates to the base-plate, substantially as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT SCHMIDT.
Witnesses:
MARY L. SAWTER, CLARA AURICH.
