MONEY ASSORTER AND COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,054, dated August 29, 1899. Application filed December 24, 1898. Serial No. 700,220. (No model.)
To all whom it may concur/t.-
Be it known that I, VITO LETO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Assorting and Counting Coins,of which the following is a specification. My invention is a device for expeditiously separating, assorting, and counting coins of various sizes; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of one of the compartments. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of modifications. Fig. 5 is a central section. Fig. 6 is Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the means for making the counted money into a package, and Fig. 9 is a modification of the dischargespout.
In carrying out my invention I employ a case 1, divided by a series of longitudinal partitions into the compartmentsl 2 3 4. 5 6 and .provided with a slot or opening 7 in its top.
A handle 9 is provided on the end or side of the case to facilitate agitation of the same, as will be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The several partitions are provided with openings or perforations 30, and from one end 'of each compartment leads a discharge-spout 10. The spouts and the openings in the partitions are graded in sizethat is, the uppermost spout and the uppermost partition are large enough to permit the passage of all but the largest coins, while each succeeding partition will likewise arrest the next largest coin. The coins are deposited in the case through the slot 7 and automatically are separated, so that each compartment will contain all the coins of a certain size. The separation or asserting of the coins is accelerated by agitating the case, and to this end the said case is supported by rollers 31, adapted to travel on a base 11. By grasping the handle 9 the case may be readily reciprocated on the-base, as will be readily understood.
It may he sometimes preferred to dispense with the rollers, in which event the agitation of the case may be accomplished by placing the handle 9 011 the top of the case and forming the bottom of the same into a rocker 32, as shown in Fig. 3. The desired result may be attained also by providing a rib or fulcrum 33 on the case, bearing upon and adapted to rock on a pedestal 34, as shown in Fig. 4.
On each of the spouts 10 is fulcrumed a double-armed lever 13, having slides or valves 15 17 at its ends and having its upper end normally pressed outward by a spring 16, as shown, which is fastened to the joint between the lever and the slide 17 and bears against and moves on the spout. IVhen the upper slide is pushed in across the spout, the spring will be shoved downward and its lower end will bear against the lower arm of the lever and hold the same out from-the spout. 18 designates a stop to limit the outward movement of the lower arm of the lever. The spouts are of such size as to hold a predetermined amount of money, and consequently the counting of the money is reduced to merely keeping tally of the number of times the spout is filled and emptied. When the upper end of the lever is pushed inward, the flow of coins into the spout is stopped and at the same time the valve at the lower end of the lever is drawn outward and the coins in the spout discharged. The lever is then given a reverse movement, so as to permit the spout to be again filled, and the operation is repeated until the compartment is emptied. To facilitate the handling of the case and emptying of the same, the platform or base 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 41, through which the spouts project when the case is turned over on its side.
The coins may be discharged from the case into any suitable receptacle gbutI prefer to employ the tubes or coin-packages 36,corresponding to the spouts in diameter and having the longitudinal slots 37, through which the coins maybe viewed. By marking a scale along the edge of the slot an exact count of a partlyfilled tube may be instantly had. The upper end of the tube will be covered by a cap 39, having bayonetslots e0 adapted to engage the pins 38 on the tube, and thereby fasten the cap to the tube. The use of these tubes or packages will be found especially advantaeous should it be desired to shorten the tube,

This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 9, in which 19 is the valve carried by the upper end of the lever 21, which is normally pressed toward the spout by a spring 22. On the lower end of the lever is a knob 20 for convenience in operating the same. The package-tube is placed under the spout and the valve withdrawn. The coins then run directly into the tube, and when the tube is filled the valve is projected across the spout so as to arrest the flow. The filled tube is replaced by an empty one, and the operation is repeated until all the coins V have been counted and packaged.
My device is simple in construction, and by its use a large number of coins of difierent denominations may be easily and rapidly assorted according to their respective values, counted,and arranged in packages of definite sums.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A coin assorter and counter consisting of a case divided into compartments by perforated partitions and having measuring-spouts at the ends of the compartments, and a base on which the case is agitated and supported.
2. The combination of a base having a 1ongitudinal slot, and a case adapted to be agitated on said base and provided with a series of horizontal compartments having dischargespouts at their ends, the case being adapted to be turned over on its side on the base so that the spouts will project through the longitudinal slot to discharge the coins.
