Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
BRUNO WVESSELMANN, OF GOTTINGEN, GERMANY.
METAL-SHEARING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,633, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed December 8, 1898- Serial No. 698,653. iNo modeld peror, residing at 58 Friedlan'der Weg, Got-j tingen, in the Province of Hanover, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Metal-Shearing Machines, of which the folthe size and power of the shears, is shaped as,
- of Fig. 4..
lowing is a specification. The present invention improvement in the construction and shape of the framing of metal-shearing machines andin the manner ofsecurin g the lower blade in the same. I
' The accompanying sheet of drawings clearly illustrates my invention.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the metal shearing machine. Fig. 2 is a face view of the shaped plate before being bent to the re quired formation. Figs. 3,4, and 5'arecrosssections showing various forms into which the bed-plate may be bent. According to my invention I form the framing or stand from a single metallic plate of a suitable contour, and I bend or press the same to the required shape.- The improved framing or bed-plate, as indicated in the drawings, is such that thesame may be readily formed from a single plate of metal. This metallic plate a, the thickness or strength of which would vary according to shown in Fig. 2. The plate a is thenbent or pressed by suitable means at the points indicated by the dotted lines until it assumes the form-shown in cross-section in Fig. 3 or that The bent-in portion 0 of the plate a (shown in Fig. 3) and the bent-out portion 0 in Fig. 4 serve as the foot by means of which the shears are supported. If desired,
' the foot 0 may be separate from and secured to the framing a b, as indicated in Fig. 5. \Vith this improved formation of bed-plate the cutting-blades m and m are so arranged relatively to each other that the lever h,-to which the blade m is secured, lies in an angular recess formed by the bending back of the upper portion a of the bed-plate, the under portion 1) of the bed-plate carrying the fixed blade m. By this arrangement the out has for its object an portions ff of the work F can both be conducted to the rear of the shears below the pivot-bolt 0 without necessitating any appreciable bending; of the cut portions of the -work. The feeding forward of the work is thus greatly facilitated, as only a slight amount of frictionv and springing of the cut plates is induced. "In addition to the foregoing advantages the shears are strengthened by the improved formation of bed-plate or framing.
They are light and can be. constructed at a cheaper rate.
The lower blade m is secured to the framing'ab c by means of bolts 8, which may be adjusted invertical directionin slots The under edge of the blade rests upon set-screws tt, passing through block-bends n, screwed to. the framing a b o. By this means the lower blade m-,is securely fastened to the framing and so prevented from being displacedrelatively to the movable blade m during the outting operation and at the same time is capable of. being tilted in either direction, to front or rear. By adj ustment of the bolts sin the slots 2' the blade m may be given such a position relatively to the movable blade m as is necessaryfor the particular material to be cut, I
and .by screwing-up or loosening the setscrews 25 t, as described, it can be held fixed in such position so. that e en under the strongest pressure displacement of the blade is prevented. j I
By having the upper front portion of the metallic plate cut away, as indicated by the cut-out in Fig. 2, a space is formed for receiving the shearing-blades, and the cut part-sv of the work can be carried backward or away from the blades without materially bending such work.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is' 1. A metal-shearing machine comprising a stand or frame, having an upper vertical por tion cut away at one end, a horizontal portion also cut away at one end, and a loWer-verti cal portion, a stationary cutting blade se-' cured to the lower vertical portion adjacent.
to the cut-away end of the horizontal portion,
an operating-leverfulerumed to the upper vertical portion and a movable cutting-blade carried thereby, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A metal-shearing machine having a frame provided with a blade m, a bolt-andslot connection for adjustably securing the blade to the frame, and adjustable supporting-screws If for the blade at the lower edge of the latter substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
