Description
NITED rares ATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR GUNS, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 629. dated March 10, 1838.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILo W. HoY'r, of Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks for Guns and other Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure. 1 represents the parts of the lock in perspective; Fig. 2, the inside ot' the main plate, which is attached to the stock, with the parts immediately connected therewith, and Fig. 3, the mainspring on its shaft or arbor, with the tumbler to which one end of the spring is to be attached, the same letters of reference being used to designate the same parts in each of the figures. Y
The principle improvement in the lock consists in the manner in which I employ a spiral or helical spring as a mainspring, and combine it with the other parts of my lock. a a a are coils of this spring, which are wound upon an arbor or shaft, b. This arbor extends through the main p atec and the plate d, which is on the opposite side ofthe stock, a hole being bored through the stock to admit said spring and its arbor to pass freely through it. One end of the spring passes through the plate d, and is seen at e, and the other end passes into a hole drilled through the tumbler f, which is attached to the arbor hand this spring will of course act upon the hammer g with a degree of force which will accord with its tension and strength, the hammer being carried by said arbor. The tumbler f, I make circular, and usually about Ve-eighths of an inch in diameter and about a fourth of an inch thick. On its periphery I make notches suitable to a full and half cock, as shown in Fig. 2. The dog z' and the feather-spring j are similar to those in ordinary use.
la L are the screws. which pass through the stock, securing the lock in its place.
This lock may be applied with equal facility and advantage either to iint 0r percussion guns. y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manner in which I have applied and combined the helical or spiral mainspring with the tumbler, hammer, and other parts of the lock, substantially as above described.
