CUTTER BAR.

(-No Model.)
a M l I M W,
.THE NORRI$ PETERS co. PNurO-Lrmo" wAsHmm-am n c,
UNJITED MIROSLAV 'VISKOCHIL, on SHETLAND, MICHIGAN.
CUTTER-BAR,
QPECIFICATI ON forming part of Letters Patent No; 628,873, dated'July 11, 1899.
Serial No. 712,449. (No model.)
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, M RosLAv Vrsnocrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shetland, in the county of Leelanau and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful improvements in Cutter-Bars, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutter-bars for mowing and reaping machines, and pertains to a cutter-bar provided with a clamping device for clamping the blades of the cutter-bar by a single movement thereof and also for releasing the cutter-blades, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a cutter-bar for reaping and mowing machines in which there is provided abar or member carrying headed clamping-bolts, which are adapted to engage the edges of the blades of the cutter-bar, and a cam member for forcing the clamping-bolt bar or member outward, and thus clamping the blades, and by means of which one or more of the blades can be detached when broken or injured and others quickly substituted therefor.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter-bar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detached clamping-bolt bar and the headed bolts carried thereby. Fig. 4 is a view of the detached cam-bar. Fig. 5 is an under plan view of a portion of a bar, showing the cutterblades.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates.
outward the heads of these bolts serve to clam p and firmly hold the cutter-blades, as will be readily understood.
A rod or bar D extends longitudinal the cutter-bar A and is united to the outer and upper ends of the bolts 0. The under side of the bar I) is provided with the cam-surfaces c, and situated between the bar D and the cutter-barA is a longitudinally-movable cambar G. This bar G is provided with a plurality of cam-surfaces (1, adapted to'ooact with the surfaces 0 of the bar D, and the'bar' Gis provided with elongated slots 6, through which the bolts 0 freely pass. These slots e permit the bar G to be reciprocated for causing its cam-surfaces to engage the camsurfaces of the bar D for locking the blades and to carry the said cams out of engagement for rel easing the blades.
, When it is desired to detach one or more of the cutter-blades B, the cam-bar G is moved endwise to have its cam-surfaces between the cam-surfaces of the bar 1). In this position the clamping-bolts are permitted to move inward or downward and the cutter-blades-to be readily and quickly removed for the purpose of being repaired or for the purpose of substituting another in its place. When the repaired or new cutter blade or blades are placed in position, the endwise movement of the bar G simultaneously clamps all of the cutter-blades through the medium of the headed bolts 0.
The bar G will be held in its locked position by means of a set-screw H, though it may be held in its locked position in any other desired manner without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
This invention is especially useful in that when a cutter-blade becomes injured in the field the operator can in a few moments detach the injured blade and put in its place a new blade, thus saving a great deal of time, and consequently economizing the mowing operation as compared with the old cutterbar in which the blades are held in position by rivets. XV hen the cutter-blades are held by rivets in the usual way, considerable time is lost in the backing out of the rivets and the placing of new ones therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improved cutting device comprising a cutter-bar, cutter-blades carried thereby, headed bolts passing through the cutter-bar and engaging the said blades, a rod connecting the headed bolts, and an endwise-moving cam-bar adapted to force the bar carrying the bolts outward for clamping the blades, substantially-as described.
2. An improved cutting device comprising a cutter-bar, cutter-blades carried thereby, bolts passing through the cutter-bar and having heads engaging the said blades, and an endwise-moving cam-bar adapted to force the headed bolts outward for clamping the cutter-blades, substantially as described.
An improved cutting device comprising a bar adapted to carry cutter-blades, cutterblades resting thereagainst and having bolt passage-ways, headed bolts passing through the bar and adapted to engage the walls of the said passage-ways, the opposite ends of the bolts extending beyond the cutter-bar, and an endwise-moving cam-rod between the extended ends of the bolts and the cutter-bar and adapted by endwise movement to clamp and release the said bolts, substantially as described.
4. An improved cutting device comprising a cutter-bar, cutter-blades carried thereby and having bolt passage-ways, bolts passing through the cutter-bar and having enlarged heads adapted to engage the walls of the passage-ways of the cutter-blades, a rod uniting the opposite ends of all of said bolts and having eam-surfaceson its inner side, anendwise-movingrod situated between the bolt uniting bar and the cutter-bar, said endwisemoving rod or bar having cam-surfaces adapted to engage the cam-surfaces of the boltuniting bar for the purpose of clamping and releasingithe heads of saidibolts against the cutter-blades, substantially as described.
5. An improved cutting device comprising a cutter-bar, cutter-blades adapted to be carried thereby and having bolt passage-ways, bolts passing through the cutter-bar and having heads engaging the walls of saidpassageways, a bar uniting the opposite ends of said bolts and having inwardly-extending camsurfaces, a cam'bar situated between the boltuniting bar and the cutter-bar, said cam-bar having elongated openings through which the bolts pass and also cams adapted to engage the cams of the bolt-uniting bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I havehere-unto set' my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MIROSLAV VISKOOHIL. Witnesses CHARLES WARNER, CARSON WARNER.
