UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIOVANNI MAURO, OF PATERSON, NEIV JERSEY, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-THIRD TO GEORGE HARRIS AND JOSEPI-I DI CARLO, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,275, dated July 4, 1899. Appiieetioi tied March 7, 1899.l seria No. 708,154. (No modem To all whom it may concern: per sides of the upper section of the frame,
Be it known that I, GIOVANNI MAURO, aV and a lower connecting-rod b3 connects the subject of the King of Italy, and a resident lower-section sides at their outer extremities. of the city of Paterson, Passaic county, New The netting apron h is provided with side 55 5 Jersey, have invented a new and useful Imchains g and is strung from the upper conprovement in Car-Fenders, of which the folnecting-rod b to the lower connecting-rod b3. lowing is a specication. y A controlling device consisting of the two The object of this invention is to provide limbs f and f2, hinged together by a hinge f, a fender or guard for cars, whether propelled straightens out when the fender is opened 6o Io by steam, electricity, or other power, which and keeps the fender opened, as shown in will pick up and carry any person Yor object Figs. 1 and 2, until the fender comes in conwhich the car may encounter while in mo! tact with someobject with sufficient force to tion and hold said person or object until the cause said controlling device to sink where car can be brought to a standstill Without sehinged and the front or outer end of the fen- 65 I5 rious injury to the person or other object so der to be elevated or raised, when the tenpicked up. sion-springs c, which connect sections d and It is also a part of the object of Iny invenft2, help to draw the front or lower section uption to so arrange the guard or fender that it ward. When the front section is thus drawn may be closed up compactly within a small `upward, the said controlling device or limbs 7o zo space and be easily removed from one end of f and f2 are lowered and rest upon the conthe car to the other when required. Y necting-bars, forming a cradle to receive and My invention consists in the peculiar conhold the person or other object whichis picked struction, arrangement, and combination of up by the contact of the fender. The inner parts, which will be hereinafter described in limb f2 of the controlling device is provided 75 25 the specification and claims, reference being with a guide-loop which surrounds the con- 4had to the accompanying drawings, which necting-rod h. Said guide-loop is of sufficient form a part of the specication, and in which length to permit the controlling device to be similar letters of reference indicate like parts lowered until it rests on the connecting-rods, in the different figures. as above mentioned, and to permit said de- 8o 3o The framework of my fender consists of .vice to be raised until it is almost level or three principal parts, which are pivotally conuntil the two limbs of the device nearly form nected in such a manner that the three seca straight line. The outer extremity of the tions may be folded together as shown in Figlimb f2 is loosely connected with the conure 3 of the drawings. Over these sections of necting-rod b3, so as to permit the raising and 8 5 3 5 the frame is secured a netting apron of suitlowering of the said controlling device. The able material, but preferably of fibrous mahinge f is adapted to prevent the limbs f' and terial. On the front of the fender is secured f2 from rising or bending upwardly where a contact-cushion of yielding material calhinged together farther than is shown in Fig. culated to soften the blow when thel fender l of the drawings. The guide-loop f3, the 9a 4o strikes a person or other object. The fender hinge f, and the tension-springs c cause the is provided with eyes whereby it is hung upon controlling device to remain rigid enough to hooks which are secured to the car-body. keep the sections of the fender extended or In the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a open, asv shown in Fig. 1, until the fender side view of my fenderwhen open and hung comes in contact with some object, when the 95 45 onto the front endof the car. Fig. 2 is a controlling device being slightly out of a planview of the same when open, and Fig. 3 straight line is lowered by the outer section is a side view of the same when closed. of the fender being elevated by such contact The upper, middle, and lower sides c, ct', and by the tension of the springs c. The and a2 of the frame-sections are pivotally conhooks d and d are secured to the front and roo 5o nected by the connecting-rods b' and b2. An rear portions of the car-platform, and the upupper connecting-rod b connects the two upper section of the fender-frame is provided with eyes to Iit on said hooks. This construction permits the fender to be folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, when the fender may be removed with facility from one end of the car to the other. The front of the fender is provided with a contact-cushion 7a, which may consist of canvas with a projecting rubber covering or other suitable yielding material.
With this description of my invention, what I claim is l.' In a guard-fender for cars, the combination with the car of a fender consisting of three sections pivotally connected by connecting-rods extending transversely across the fender, tension-springs connecting the middle and lower sections of fender, a contact-cushion consisting of yielding material secured to the front of the fender and a controlling device consisting of two members two ends of which are connected by a hinge, the one end of the outer member being loosely secured with a connecting-rod at the front of the fender, the other end of the inner member being provided with a guide-loop, which passes around an inner connecting-rod of fender, said controlling device being located midway between the sides of the fender, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a life-saving guard for cars, the combination with the frame consisting of three sections pivotally connected as to fold together, of side tension-springs connecting the middle and lower sections of the frame and a controlling device located midway between thesides of the fender and consisting of two members connected by a hinge, one end of one member loosely secured to the front of fender-frame and one end of the other member being provided with a guideloop, Which passes around a transverse connecting-rod of fender-frame and limits the movement of the controlling device, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In a life-saving guard for cars, the combination with the frame consisting of three sections pivotally connected as to fold together, of side tension-springs connecting the middle and lower sections of the frame and a controlling device located midway between the sides of the fender and consisting of two members connected by a hinge, one end of one member loosely secured to the front of fender-frame and one end of the other member being provided with a guide-loop, which passes around a transverse connecting-rod of fender-frame and limits the movement of the controlling device, a contact-cushion secured to the front of fender and a netting apron secured to fender-frame, the fender-frame being provided with eyes, the whole being adapted to being hung on suitable hooks secured either to the front or rear of a car, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
