UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR E. NEWQUIST, OF CARLTON, MINNESOTA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 628,208, dated July 4;, 1899. Application filed January 24, 1899. Serial No. 703,271. (No model.)
1o tains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to fence-posts; and the object is to provide a fence-post which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production,
and easily applied.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a blank from which the post is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the post bent to shape. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a similar view at right angles to 2 5 Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the body of the fence-post, made of metal bent into angular shape and provided on its edges with slots 2, into which the fence-wires are adapted to be are integral with the body portion and are formed with two prongs 4 and 5,each of which is the termination of the webof the body portion of the fence. One of these webs at its lower end is bent to form a lateral edge a, and thence downwardly to form the prong 4,
The lower ends of this fence-post which is preferably tapered and is provided with a cutting edge 6. The other web is bent in a horizontal position under the ledge a,
and thence downwardly to form the prong 5,
. which is preferably of the same shape as the ron 4. These pron s are arran "ed at ri h p b b D b angles in cross-section.
If desired, the post may be galvanized or painted to render it proof against the weather.
From the foregoing descriptiomtakenin con nection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved post will be readily apparent without requiringan extended explanation. By forming it from a single piece of metal it may be stamped out and bent into form at very small cost and when in place in the ground will act as a powerful support for the fencewires.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
' A fence-post formed of a single piece of metal having an angular body composed of webs, the lower ends of which are bent at right angles to the webs to form overlapping ledges, the ends of which terminate in tapering entering prongs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. V
