'EO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, JOHN P. HART, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement on C'nr-Truek; and I de hereby declare that the following isV a i'nll and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of this description, in which- Figure l is anend elevation of my improved car-truck. I
The nat'ure of my invention consists in the use of' such a combination of different-sized earwheels upon axles, as will allow the smaller wheels, when not in use, to he carried over the switches of the track four feet eight and one-halt` inches, (4 Sl oiufour feet ten inch (410) gauge railroads. This is especially necessary when incre than two wheels are used upon the axle for runninr on roads of different gauges. It is evident that if the wheelswere of like diameter, those wheels not running upon vthe track would strike against the frog and throw the truck elf theV track. By the use of large and small wheels this objection is ohviated, and only the frogs of live feet six inches (5 G) or six feet gauge railroads necessarily have to he changed to allow the larger wheelsrto pass over the road and through the frogs when the smaller wheels are in use.
To enable others to rnake and use my improved car-truck, I will describe the niet-hed of construction and operation. I
B represents the common ear axle7 and C' the hearings resting upon the saine. D shows the two larger wheels attached to the axle B in the usual manner, andsueh a distan-ce apart as to suit any desired gauge of road. .E .shows the sin-aller wheels attached to the axle B, at such a distance apart, and from the other wheels7 D, as will snit the gauge of any other road desired. 'l make the diameter of the smaller wheels, including the lange, alittle less than' the diameter ot' the larger wheels,'exelusive of the flange. ly this arrangement the flange of the smaller wheels will he carried over the frogs, so that-the truck can be run over roads of different gauges without difficulty, Y
Operation.
When the wheels of the truck are arranged as described, suitable frogs and switches will have to he arranged in order to allow the larger whecls'to pass through the frogs and on to the rail ofthe diiTerent-gauged read. In all other respects the track can be usedlike those now employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The use of di'e1'entsized car-wheels of trucks upon the same axles, and for the purpose set forth, to obvia-te the necessity of transferring passengers or freight on account of the difference in the gauges of railroads.
