To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSE GALLEGOS, a citizen of the Republic of Guatemala, and a resident of San Jos de Guatemala, in the Republic of Guatemala, have invented new and usef ul Improvements in Telegraph Receivers or Relays, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinven tion relates to electromagnetic circuit-closers of the class known as relays, such as used principally in telegraphy,and has for its object to provide a relay having a powerful magnetic effect, the strength of which is readily adjustable.
To this end my invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts defined in the appended claims, the preferred embodiment of my invention being shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of the improved relay. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing one of the linemagnet spools in section, and Fig. 3 is an end view from the side on which the adjustingscrew H is arranged.
On a suitable base I are secured supports G, in which are mounted to slide longitudinally the spools A of the line-magnet, the adjustment being effected by means of a screw H, journaled in a stationary bracket H and having an enlarged head H fitting into arecess of a lug B, projecting from the crossbar Biwhich connects the cores B of the linemagnet. The said cores are provided at one end with bent members or crank members B terminating in pole-pieces B extending parallel to the axes of the cores. These polepieces and crank members are preferably sheathed with rubber J except at their extremities. The crank members B are mounted to turn about the axes of the respective cores B, so that the distance from one polepiece to the other may be readily varied. Obviously this might be effected by having thecrank members B turn upon stationary cores B with sufficient friction to prevent an accidental movement of said members. I prefer, however, to make the crank members rigid with the corresponding cores, as shown, the cores turning in the spools with sufficient friction to prevent an accidental rotary movement, and in such case a longitudinal movement of the cores B relatively to the spools A is prevented by making the cores with shoul ders engaged by the ends A of the spools A.
Adjacent to the pole-pieces B is arranged the armature C, suspended at C from a supthe medium of the support F,while the other.
point F may serve as a stop only. To keep the armature in a predetermined position when not attracted by the magnetA B, Iprovide a spring K, passing through a ring D on the support D and secured by means of a string or wire K to a spindle L, rotatable in the post L, so that by turning the spindle and winding the flexible connection K thereon more or less the tension of the springK may be adjusted.
It will be observed that by swinging the eccentric pole-pieces B on the axes of the respective cores I not only adjust the distances of said pole-pieces from each other, but I also vary the distance of said pole-pieces from the pivot O of the armature G, and I am thus on abled to increase or decrease the leverage of the magnetic force exerted upon the armature. The pole-pieces while being adjusted move in a plane perpendicular to the axes of the cores or with respect to the armature in a plane perpendicular to that in which the armature moves.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of the movable armarotation, the armature pivoted about an axis 'crank member being movable about the axis perpendicular to the cores axis of rotation, of the core, and a circuit-closercontrolled by IO and a circuit-closer controlled by the move- 'the movement of the armature.
