JULIAN STAPF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FIREARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,310, dated June 6, 1899.
' Application filed March 30, 1899. Serial No. 711,187. (No model.)
1'0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIAN STAFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in breech-loading firearms; and the object is to improve the construction and increase the effectiveness of the gun.
My invention is designed more particularly as an improvement on that class of arms of which the Flobert rifle may be taken as a type.
To this end the invention consists in providing the standing breech with a transverselysliding plate in which the forward end of the firing-pin is mounted, so that the pin may be adjusted for center or rim fire cartridges, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rifle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the standing breech, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on the line of the firing-pin. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the standing breech with the spring retracted firing-pin and slide removed.
1 denotes the breech extension of the gun, and 2 the standing breech, secured therein by means of the screws 3 4.
5 denotes a cylindrical recess formed in the face of the standing breech, which communicates with the orifice 6.
7 represents the firing-pin, formed with a central collar 8 and a stem 9 to receive the impact of the hammer.
1O denotes the retracti n g-spring,encompass ing the firing-pin between the collar 8 and the sliding plate 12. The plate 12 has a sliding movement in the transverse groove 13, formed in the front face of the standing breech, its upper edge 14: being downwardly beveled, as
shown, to engage the corresponding]y-beveled lip 15 on the standing breech, while its lower parallel edge 16 is inwardly and upwardly beveled to fit the correspondinglybeveled lower wall 17 of said groove, and 1S denotes a machine-screw inserted in the face of the standing breech, so that its fiat head 19 will be flush with the face of the breech and plate, a portion of its head projecting into a recess 20 in said plate to retain it in place and also form a limit-stop in either direction for the lateral movement of the plate.
21 represents an orifice in the plate, through which the firing-pin projects, and 22 23 denote countersunk recesses on the back face of said plate to receive the end of the spring-actuated retaining-pin 24, so arranged that when said pin 24 engages the recess 22 the orifice 21 is axially alined with the recess 5, the point of the firing-pin 7 will strike the center of the cartridge, and if the plate be moved laterally, so that the pin 24. will engage the recess 23, then the point of the firing-pin is movedlaterally, so that it will impinge on the rim of the cartridge, thus permitting either rim or center fire cartridges to be used.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The standing breech, 2, formed with the recess, 5, and alined orifice, (3, and the transverse groove, 13, in combination with the spring-retracted pin, 7, and the sliding plate, 12, formed with the orifice, 21, and adj ustably secured in said groove in said standing breech, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIAN STAPF.
