NITED STATES JACOB DANZ, 2D, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
PAIL- EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,383, dated May 23, 1899.
Application filed January 30, 1899. Serial No. 703,777. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB DANZ, 2d, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Pail-Ears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of sheet-metal pails, particularly in the manufacture of ears forsuch pails; and it consists, essentially, in providing an ear of two parts or members adapted to be telescoped or interlocked with each other, one
member being designed for attachment first to the body of the pail, after which the other or bail member is engaged or interlocked with it.
The particular features of construction and the different and various modifications of structure are set forth in the following specification and claims and in the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification.
In the drawings, Figures 1 to 9, inclusive, show one type or form of the invention, and Figs. 10 to 13, inclusive, another or modified form, Figs. 1 to 7 showing one means of attachment to the pail, and Figs. 8 and 9 showing modified means, the means employed in Figs. 10 to 13 also being slightly different from the others.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pail fitted with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective details of the attached members. Fig. at is a perspective detail of the member shown in Fig. 2 as attached to the pail. Fig.
' 5 is a vertical section of Fig. 4 through the ear member. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a pail centrally through the two members of the ear telescoped together, but not interlocked. Fig. 7 is a similar section showing the members interlocked or secured together. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing another means of attachment to the pail. Fig. 9 is a similar view showing still another means of attachment. Fig. 10 shows a vertical section of a modified form of ear in which the members are interlocked by means of a screwthread. Fig. ll is a sectional detail of a pail with a soeketedopening to receive the ear. Fig. 12 is the member which is to be inserted in the opening of the pail, and Fig. 13 is the bail member which is screwed upon the other after it is inserted in the pail to give the complete finished" structure shown in Fig. 10.
Figs. 1 to 9 of the drawings show a con struction in which the members of the car are similar short sheet-metal cylinders nested or telescoped together and permanently engaged and interlocked by the inturning of the edge of the outer member upon the convex head of the inner member. In Figs. 10 to 13 the members are shown of the same general form, but provided with screw-threads to serve as an interlocking means.
lllyimprovement comprises the two similar short sheet- metal cylinders 2 and 3, the mem-- ber 3 being fitted to or telescoping within the member 2, each having one open end. The closed end or head of the member 2 is plain surfaced and adapted to be seated upon the surface of the pail-body, while the head 5 of the member 3 is convex. The member2 is secured to the exterior of the pail in any convenient manner, such as by means of a rivet 4 (see Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7) or a projection or boss 7 upon the head inserted through an opening in the pail and riveted (see Fig. 8) or by means of solder dropped into a flanged opening 8 in the head of the member 2. (See Fig. 9.) The mem= ber 3 has a central opening through its head 5 to receive the bail in the ordinary manner. After the member 2 is secured to the pail the member 3 is slipped or telescoped into it, as shown in Fig. 6, after which the projecting edge 6 of the member 2 is inturned or closed down upon the head 5, thereby rigidly interlocking the members and making the whole a fixed attachment to the pail.
In the modified construction of Figs. 10 to 13 the pail is provided with a socketed or countersunk opening, (see Fig. 11,) into Which is fitted the member 2, the head of which has a circumferential flange 10, that fits closely within the socket ll of the pail-opening. Both members are similarly screw-threaded, the member 3 in this case being fitted outside the member 2 and screwed down until the edge abuts against the outturned flange of the opening in the pail, as shown in Fig. 10.
In both types of the invention it'is to be noted that one member is first secured to the pail either by riveting, soldering, or otherwise, as shown, after which the other member is slipped upon or into it and secured in place by a suitable interlocking means.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. A pail-ear comprising two interlocking cup-shaped members one adapted for attachment to the pail and the other to the bail.
2. A two-part pail-ear comprising, two cupshaped members, one attached to the pail and the other to the bail, and telescoped and secured together.
3. A pail-ear comprising telescoping cupshaped members secured to the pail and the bail.
4. A pail-ear comprising telescoping sheetmetal cupped disks respectively attached to the pail and bail and interlocked.
5. A pail-ear of the class described comprising telescoping sheet-metal cupped disks, one being secured to the pail and the other attached to the bail, the edge of the outer member being inturned and closed upon the other to interlock the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
