SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,618, dated May 9, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BRELS- FOARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Heno, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridges, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to that class of bridges wherein the roadway is ad justably supported between side trusses; and the objects of my improvement are embodied in the construction of the arches and the impost-s and the adjustable manner in which the beams that form the arches are connected together and with the imposts. These objects are obtained in the following-described manner, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bridge; Fig. 2, a perspective view of an impost; Fig. 3, the manner of connecting the stringers, &c., to the post; Fig. 4, a sectional elevation, and Fig. 5 a plan, of one of the angles of the arch.
In the drawings, 6 represents the springerbeams, and 7 the key-beam, of the arch. Metal imposts 8 are mounted on the abutments and are each formed with a transverse concave seat 9, that contains groove 10 across the middle portion of the face, a middle longitudinal opening 11, a transverse bolt-hole 12, a lug 13 on the front projection of its base, and socket 14 in the middle of its top surface. Supporting-posts 15 depend from the angles of the arch and each consists of two pieces of channel'iron connected together at their edges by lattice-work or bridging. (Not shown.) Yokes 16, secured to said posts by bolts 17,. support the ends of floor-beams 18. J oists 19 rest with their extremities on the floorbeams and on the abutments 20 to support the flooring-boards 21, placed transversely thereon to form the roadway.

Lateral stay-rods (not shown) provided with turnbuckles are extended diagonally under the joists and engage by their respective extremities with a corresponding lug 13 on the impost and yoke 16 or the floor-beam. Guard-rails 26 are each secured at one end to a springer-beam and supported at the other end by a post 27, that is secured by set-screw 28 in socket 14, formed on the im post. Said guard-rails and supporting-posts are preferably formed of gas-pipe.
By reference to Figs. 4 and 5 the springer and key beams are shown to each consist of a single section of tubing or large gas-pipe.
In each end of the key-beams is inserted a metal head 31, that forms a member of the hinge or angle of the arch. Said head is formed with an abrupt shoulder 32, that contains an annular groove 33 for the reception of the extremity of the hollow beam. The portion 34 that extends beyond thebeam is formed square in cross-section,wi th a transverse bolthole 35 for the insertion of a bolt to secure one end of the brace-rods 24. Said head terminates in a transverse concave seat 36, with middle groove 37 to correspond in form and dimensions with seats 9 in the imposts.

For the same purpose metal bars (not shown) may be bolted against each side of the joint thus formed by means of bolts inserted through the bolt-holes 12 and 43 in the impost and in the head) In like manner the adjacent extremities of the springergand key beams maybe properly engaged andthe top of the posts containing transverse convex surfaces to movably engage with the adjacent seats inthe key-beam and the impost respectively.
3. In a bridge, the combination with tubular springer and key beams the one terminating at each end in a transverse convex surface, the other in a transverse concave seat of a rib in the convex surface and a groove across the concave seat arranged to register the one with the other.
