Description

No. 624,562. Patented May 9., |899. H. STELLING.

(Application led Nov. 15, 189B.)
` NiTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HERMAN STELLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
vINDICA-ron.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 624,562, dated May 9, 1899. Application iiled November l5, 1898. Serial No. 696|5l0. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN STELLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Corona,) in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain ing drawings form a part, in which the sepa-I rate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved indicator; Fig. 2, a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a partial longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide an indicator which comprises a plate or board 5, which is preferably provided with side strips 6, which prevent it from warping or twisting, and said plate or board is also provided with transverse wires or rods 7, 4which are partially countersunk therein, and with longitudinal spring-metal strips 8, which are secu red thereto over said wires or rods. The plate or board is provided at the upper end thereof with a segmental portion or extension 9, which bears the numerals 1 to 6, inclusive, arranged in a segmentally-curved line thereon, and these numerals designate the tables in the place where the indicator is used, and said tables are in practice provided with corresponding numbers or numerals, and any desired number of these numbers or numerals may be used on the indicator, as will be readily understood. The indicator is also provided with a pivoted pointer 10,'which operates in connection with the numbers or numerals referred to, and one side of the indicator is divided into spaces 11, and said spaces are mostly provided centrally with the names of the articles furnished in the caf or restau- 8, and each of the spaces formed by the transverse wires or rods 7 is thus provided with one of the pivoted blocks 12 for each of the longitudinal strips S.
By providing the transverse wires or rods '7 and seourin g the spring-metalstrips 8 thereover I form depressions in said spring-metal strips at the point where the pivoted blocks 12 are connectedt-herewith, and these depressions cause said blocks to bind thereon, and thus the friction is increased and said blocks rant where lhe'indicator is employed. The
will not be accidentally moved or turned, but
can be readily turned on their pivotal supports by means of the thumb and finger.
In the device shownin Fig'. 1 the pointer 10 indicates table No. 2, and if a customer should come in and be seated at this table the waiter would take h is order and turn the corresponding block 12, as indicated at 14. The waiter would also turn one of the blocks to indicate the price of the article ordered, as indicated at 15, and when the article is paid for another of saidv blocks would be-turned to indicate the fact, as shown at 16. By means of this device the article orderedthe price thereof, and the fact that it has been paid for may always be clearly shown by the indicator, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction'and. op eration and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modiications thereof as fairly come with in the scope of the invention.
IOO
'in each of said transverse spaces, said indicator being provided at one side with spaces .formed by said rods or wires, substantially as shown and described.
2. An indicator, comprising a plate or board provided at one end with a pointer, and with a plurality of numbers arranged in a segmental line, adjacent thereto, said plate or board being also provided with a corresponding number of longitudinal spring-strips and transverse divisions, whereby the plate or board is divided into horizontal and transverse spaces, blocks pivotally connected with said spring-strips and each of said transverse spaces, said indicator beingr also provided at one side with spaces corresponding with the transverse spaces thereof, substantially as shown and described.
3. An indicator of the class described, provided at one end with a pointer and a numerical scale in connection with which said pointer operates, a plurality of parallel metal strips secured thereto, and each provided with a plurality of depressions, a plurality-of longitudinal and transverse rows of pivoted blocks, each of which blocks is connected with one of said metal strips in one of the depressions thereof, and said indicator being provided at one side with spaces correspond- `ing with said transverse rows, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12thday of November, 1898.
